Train to the Afterlife Meme

Congratulations: You are dead.

Maybe you know how, maybe you don't. Perhaps the memory is fuzzy, or perhaps it's crystal clear down to the look in your comrades' eyes. Maybe it was your time; you've done all you wanted to. Or maybe you weren't at all ready to go, maybe you went out kicking and screaming - but none of it matters. You know you're dead, and the train is taking you to an afterlife. Perhaps an afterlife of your choice; you might've earned that heaven. Or perhaps you've earned something else entirely.

It'll be a bit of a journey, though, so you might as well take your time and talk to the other people in your coach. Death knows no place: most of them are strangers, even from faraway worlds. But death knows no time either, so who knows, some of them may be people you know, even if last you knew, they were alive - or long gone.

Oh look, here comes the snack cart.


All the usual:

• Post with your character's name and canon in the subject line.
  
• Said character is now dead for whatever reason - canon, AU, what have you. They are on a train with other dead people from many other times, places and worlds.
  
• Characters don't know for a fact where they're headed - just a general awareness that they're going to some kind of afterlife. Whatever they think it is is up to the player.

[It would eventually come to this, they both knew that. However, at both their deaths, Insomnia was still thriving because of his son, and because of that, both Noctis and Ignis could rest easy. A rest that they both deserved, after everything that happened, and afterward. It was nice to have some peace and quiet for once; the only sound being their breathing and the train that was infinite in it's journey.]

Well, you finally get to get some rest, specs. [Noctis sits across from his old friend, and retainer. A smile on his lips; holding his youthful appearance on their train to the afterlife. After all, this was the best time of their lives, despite all the bad things.] What are you gonna do now that you have a life long vacation?

[ Bakugou doesn't remember the circumstances of how he got here at first. It was all so intense and fast, the trauma of it has left him confused. One minute there were explosions and upheaval, blood everywhere- the next minute there was this.

He's on a train and... he knows where he's going, but there's no way that's possible. There's just no way, because deep in his gut he knows exactly where that is. Bakugou of course, being the person he is, won't accept that. He moves from car to car, trying to find any exist, any person he might find familiar...

And that's when he sees it. The spiky red hair of the person he would never in a million years mistaken for anyone else.]

[Who else would be here but Grantaire, really? Enjolras did permit it, after all, and even if that permission had only been meant for that moment, it was too late now. They were both very much here and very much going in the same direction.]

[There should be an edge to the words, some sort of jab layered in so that this could be any other time they've spoken. Grantaire doesn't quite manage it. The words are soft and tired instead, because he's not entirely sure he even wants to ask but he knows that he probably won't like the answer.]

( She had, in the end, died for her Cause. In terms of optimistic takeaways, it wasn't much – but then, it's not quite set in yet. The train is chugging along a nondescript enough Scottish landscape, and she feels vaguely reminded of the trips to Hogwarts. This is, ultimately, what had her decide on this compartment.

They only shared compartments once, maybe twice. The summer before he received his mark, the summer when she had already had hers, and when she had been tasked, as they all had been, with finding other potential recruits among their fellow students.

She slides the door open, and there's just enough hesitation for him to notice, seeing how she rarely is one to hesitate at all. Then she looks up, and there is a mixture of emotion as she recognises him. Happiness, a pained twist, something like regret: he must have charged back into battle. Would she rather have him here with her or alive and with her sister?

She can't say, and that alone is telltale. Stepping inside, the door slides shut behind her. )

Jack had known for too long how it would end. He hadn't meant to overhear Martha and That Doctor, the Not-His His Doctor with the great hear and that coat. He knew how he would finally die. To see Martha Jones one last time, and to have the Doctor there, not fully understanding, but to be there when he was needed? Jack didn't think he would want for anything more.

But maybe...but in all his time...he had never seen His Doctor again. The one he had waited on. Not once.

The shift to the afterlife is strange, and the Face of Boe falls away into how Jack, how Time, remembers him best. Captain Jack Harkness, that coat, that hair, those dimples, all back at once. All of a sudden, there is a train whistle. And all at once Jack remembers. As he always remembers after plunging into the dark, but can never remember after he's been pulled back to life. He's been here before.

"Oh, you again!" The sharp voice comes from a man, wearing a train conductor's uniform, but his face remains obscured, like no one can quite focus on it enough to see it. It's loud enough to disturb a few other passengers, faces peek out from behind compartment doors. "I've told you, no free rides!"

"Wait," Jack finds himself speaking, raising a hand, and the object that has never been in his hand any time previous tells him exactly what this means.

"...I have my ticket this time."
