Or, more accurately, parchment, because you've either found yourself or always been in a time (it doesn't necessarily have to be medieval) where swords - and possibly sorcery - are the weapons and the mindset of the day; at the very least, the rough and tumble attitude that comes with a knife's edge permeates the land. And you know how to wield a weapon, be it a blade, your own body, or something else entirely, so you've put it to good use. You've become a sworn sword to protect someone. It could be out of the goodness of your heart, out of heritage, or stemmed from a desire for compensation or power. No matter what the cause, however, one fact remains the same, and that's how you cannot let emotions cloud your judgment. Of course, that may be a little easier said than done. When you're so close to a person, in order to keep them safe, and when you put your very life on the line... ...ah, but you must persevere. Your duty does not allow you to falter. [ What do you do when you've given up your power, bequeathed it to an heir? Granted all that you are, your purpose, your place in the world, your subordinates beneath you, your title and the duty that's defined your very existence for eons, to someone else? When you've all but vanished, turned to nothing but motes of light, and then found yourself, somehow, impossibly, not dead as you'd expected?

What do you do when you find yourself alive, returned at the hands of your enemies, your stolen body filled with a terrible power that's meant to sunder the very sky you were made to protect?

To Lucifer, finding himself returned, standing before Sandalphon, a jagged, pitted spear in his hand, there's only one answer.

He meets Sandalphon's eyes; he doesn't even know if his own are still blue. They might not be. After all, his wings aren't white anymore, what's to say his eyes haven't changed, darkened, too?

But he smiles as he lifts the spear, as he turns away — turns on the ones who'd brought him back. (They should have expected this; he's already betrayed his creator once. Doing it a second time is easy.) He can give Sandalphon this, at least, even if it's not the reunion he'd wished for. No garden, no coffee, but he can at least ensure that in their reunion, Sandalphon doesn't have to look upon him as an enemy.

He throws himself into the fray, a dark slash against Beelzebub and Belial, light glinting off Eden's jagged edges. And when they've finally fled, no match for the weapon they've crafted, Lucifer finds himself kneeling, panting on the ground at Sandalphon's feet.

What do you do when you have nothing left, when you've given everything you are away? The answer is easy.

He lays down the spear, spreads his dark wings, and lowers his head. ]

Sandalphon-sama.
