The Train to the Afterlife Meme

Congratulations: You are dead.

 

Maybe you know how, maybe you don't. Perhaps the memory is fuzzy, or perhaps it's crystal clear down to the look in your comrades' eyes. Maybe it was your time; you've done all you wanted to. Or maybe you weren't at all ready to go, maybe you went out kicking and screaming - but none of it matters. You know you're dead, and the train is taking you to an afterlife. Perhaps an afterlife of your choice; you might've earned that heaven. Or perhaps you've earned something else entirely.

 

It'll be a bit of a journey, though, so you might as well take your time and talk to the other people in your coach. Death knows no place: most of them are strangers, even from faraway worlds. But death knows no time either, so who knows, some of them may be people you know, even if last you knew, they were alive - or long gone.

 

Oh look, here comes the snack cart.

• Post with your character's name and canon in the subject line.

• Said character is now dead for whatever reason - canon, AU, what have you. They are on a train with other dead people from many other times, places and worlds.

• Characters don't know for a fact where they're headed - just a general awareness that they're going to some kind of afterlife. Whatever they think it is is up to the player.

• This meme is built especially for cross-canon interaction, and potentially for threadjacking and group threading - if you're interested, may be a good idea to state as much in your subject line.

To his surprise, their thoughts were much quieter than normal, as if everyone was far away. He turned to the person next to him. "Where are we going?"

[Pyrrha's been awake for about an hour now, or so she'd guess. Time feels slippery, too loose to nail down for sure - and the blackness outside the windows of the train is blank, unfathomable, which certainly doesn't help. She rubs the spot just above her breast, pinprick of discomfort emanating from just under the skin. There's a part of her, buried, that knows why, but the voice in the back of her head says now is not the time to poke at the knowledge.

She decides she's going to pretend she's hungry, which is enough to get her out of her seat, at least, and down through the coach. Surely there's a dining coach around here somewhere - though why she's sure of that, Pyrrha couldn't tell you, considering she hasn't seen a single soul since she woke up here. She knows why.]

[ It had taken everything for Haein to get here. He'd like to think that every heinous act, every drop of blood spilled, and every bleak, blistering moment he'd been forced to endure had led up to this. It didn't matter that he'd had to go crawling back into servitude, humiliating himself in the process and doing as he was told. It didn't matter that he had left a trail of destruction behind him, murdering families and taking lives at the drop of a hat. There had been one thing on his mind, a reward to meet at the end of his actions, and when that meant tearing down literally anything and everything in his way, he had done it without hesitation.

All of the sacrifice was worth it to see Hyunseok again. It had been too long since Haein had last seen the only person he had ever grown to care about, to fall in love with. He had given up on making connections at a young age, had given up on humanity as a whole up until Hyunseok had basically shoved and elbowed his way in. Haein hadn't known what to do about it back then, just went along with it in a confused stupor as Hyunseok took the lead. His lack of direction had later shown damaging repercussions, but even after all of that... Haein couldn't shake himself free of the attachment he'd somehow managed to grow for the other boy. It was this attachment that made him go back, made him stay, made it impossible to let go.

And so he's here now, dropped off on what resembles a train station in a place that's neither living nor dead. A promise is a promise and Haein had been sure to make the other party keep his end of the deal. Every part of his body is tense and he has to struggle to keep from trembling out of anticipation. He's waited so long for this... There's nothing else he's ever wanted more.

But it was finding Hyunseok that was becoming a challenge. In a place as expansive as this, he doesn't know where to start. Haein moves across the platform, gaze anxiously scanning the area for a familiar figure. ]

Hyunseok...?

[ His voice comes out in a rasp, throat dry from nervousness. He swallows, clears his throat, and then calls out again, tone clearer this time. ]

Hyunseok!
