( the utility closet is familiar scenery for him: he has always been sandwiched in the most inconvenient and unpleasant places, hung up by the collar of his coat upon pegs, or buried beneath the peels and wrappers of a summer-baked garbage bin, locked into tiny quarters to be discovered the following school morning. but never under such specific circumstances, coaxed to meet in private by the other warbler, plumes of hot breath warming the small space between them, the two students huddled in the dark, listening to the final rummagings and fading conversations of lingering boys, finally emptying the hallways for the lunch hall. the reprieve ends in just thirty short minutes, and then classes resume, kurt's heart rabbiting at his wrists and in his chest and a point in his throat, straining to get a proper glimpse of blaine in the dim confines. )

[Another week, another battle, and Hux's contingent was back amid civilization for the moment, shifting their base of operations to an Order-controlled town. The citizenry weren't terribly pleased by the intrusion, but turned over the local inn and city hall to the occupying force, affording an opportunity for ships to be repaired and cleaned. Hux's flagship had taken a few hits as they'd tailed the Resistance to another system, so he found himself among those relegated to a commandeered room, trading steel walls and dark-hued furnishings for plaster and wood, sunlight pouring from a tall window over colorful rugs and floral-patterned upholstery.

There was something discomfiting about the place, something that made him inherently uneasy--it wasn't until the first night in that he was able to put his finger on it, scrolling through messages on his datapad while the glow of one of the planet's moons filtered through the panes. It was quiet, bereft of the ambient noise of rumbling engines and whirring ventilation fans. He wasn't accustomed to silence; silence ordinarily meant danger, the mark of broken down machinery or untamed wilderness.

When he did manage to sleep, he did it with a comm still in his ear, switched to the static of an unused channel.

He still had the usual correspondence to attend to, the briefings over breakfast and meetings after lunch, high command clustered in a too-warm room overlooking a sweep of beachfront. In some ways, however, the work necessarily tapered; strategies were set, the repair efforts chugged along without need for intervention. He strolled among rows of communications officers set up at desks in a high-ceilinged hall, checked in with other battalions through holoconference, and endured a certain restlessness that came from waiting.

He tried, too, to keep his mind away from his encounter with Rey, though he found her in corridors and on the grounds, in exchanged glances and formalities that felt hollow. At one point, as he crossed a grassy yard on his way to assist with an inspection, he caught sight of her training with Ren, sabers flashing. He paused, and time seemed to fade; it was only when Ren threw him a scowl that he moved on, tearing his gaze from her limber footwork and the heaving of her chest.

In their off hours, some of his fellow officers managed to befriend the owner of a local eatery, and in the wake of another thoroughly useless intelligence debrief he found himself sharing some sort of cream-topped pastry and accepting a glass of brandy. He'd never been much for small talk and thus mostly listened as they spoke about what life could be like after the war--fine homes and riches, family and travel. He tried not to think about the gulf that seemed to stretch between here and that rosy future, the tragedies that might still come, the ways in which Ren could topple well-considered plans. He tried, too, not to think about the difficult politics of Rey, what could be and what would have to be.

It was with those sobering ruminations in the back of his mind that he finally took his leave for his quarters, hazy from the alcohol and ready for another bout of static-assisted sleep. He came across her suddenly enough that it seemed that he had willed her to appear, jolting alert a foot from the inn's entranceway and feeling instantly embarrassed for it.]
