[ it’s hot out, the sweltering kind of unbearable hot that makes his shirt stick to his back, heavy and uncomfortable— but there’s no time to think about that, he only thinks about keeping his pace steady, making sure that noct is still beside him, and that they get a good distance away from them. that they make it somewhere safe where they can rest, figure out where they are, and how to find ignis and gladio who are probably worried sick with the two of them missing in action.

he almost trips over a branch hidden in the grass, wheels forward a couple steps to regain his balance, before he keeps moving, keeps running because that’s what they do now. it’s not that he doesn’t think they can take them, he and noct, those afflicted by the starscourge they’re not fast like they are, and there’s no way they could keep up with noct when he’s at warp speed. but. they have the numbers. and there’s always a chance something could go wrong, and one of them could get scratched, even worse could get bit. and then—

it would be over. there’s no way to help someone, no amount of potions or spells that can stop a person from changing. it’s always the same. the wound becomes something putrid, infected, causes the skin around it to decay something in the bloodstream to go wrong ( he doesn’t know the exact details, doesn’t think he wants to know them really ) and then they die. or the part of them that’s human dies. and something else reanimates.

he knows they’re not people, not who they once were really, but it’s still hard to fight them. maybe if he were a little more like ignis ‘they are nothing but shells prompto, there is nothing of their former selves left’, or like gladio who grimaces whenever they inevitably get into a fight they can’t run from but cleaves down the afflicted anyway he would be able to shoot them down without faltering, without his hands shaking.

suddenly he’s glad that he’d taken up running when he was younger, that all that long-distance has made him used to the strain on his lungs and the ache present in his legs. he’s even more glad, when there’s shelter in the distance. what looks to be an old dilapidated shack, one that’s barely standing, but shelter nonetheless. when they reach it, and the coast is clear ( there’s no shuffling, no sound of branches breaking behind them ) he allows himself to lean over. place his hands on his knees and lower his head until he catches his breath and turns to noct with a wobbly grin that’s all relief. ] Glad we made it out of that in one piece huh, Noct?

[ he doesn’t feel the need to elaborate on how they almost didn’t. how they were almost swarmed by some kind of herd of the afflicted. ]

... She hasn't actually put much thought into that. She has vague plans of getting them to deliver stuff across the wasteland, but mostly she just wants to build a buttload of robots. Because she has an unhealthy obsession with robots. Because... reasons??? Maybe it's all the chicanery that happened up at Big M.T. when her brain got removed and revolted against her. She's still not sure what the hell happened there. But one thing lead to another and here she is on the east coast! Significantly less roman-themed assholes out here, significantly more robots! Paradise!
