This is it. Congratulations. You are in the process of, have already, or are about to die. If you're still living, you probably only have a very limited amount of time left: make it count.

CAUSE OF DEATH

1. Murder: You fell in battle or upset the wrong people and are now paying the price.
   
2. Accidental: Nobody meant for it to happen, but, serious or stupid the cause may be, it's happening.
   
3. Terminal illness: There's nothing you can do about it. (Or is there?) Supernatural causes like curses can also go here.
   
4. Natural causes: Sometimes it's just time.
   
5. Heroic sacrifice: This might encompass one or more of the above in the process.
   
6. Other. Maybe you're already dead and are coming back for a visit? Be creative.

Derek had done this sort of job many times over, so this wasn't the first time he pushed down the doubt that he might not come back home alive, in fact, he was probably overconfident on this one. The job was simple, a get in and get out as quietly and quickly as possible type, find the documents and then send them off to the man paying for this job. It was easy enough in theory but in execution, sometimes these things didn't pan out so well.

The job itself had the highest payout Derek's ever seen, enough to cover the trio's education if any of them decided to go to college. How could he not take it when he has them to worry about in terms of their future. His mom would nudge his arm with that look of - 'Hah, told you you'd be a good father one day.' - if she caught him being this responsible. No doubt Dmitri's probably told her about them already.

When he sneaks onto the property, carrying only what he could fit on his person, the less he carried, the less noise he'd make, he's quick to move past guard rotations, lightly stepping around hallway corners until he lockpicked his way into the office. Derek wasn't much of a hacker by any means but that's what Dmitri was for, quietly talking into a mic setup in his mask as his guard relayed instructions back. A few minutes later and he's in, hooking up his phone to the laptop as he starts copying a copy of the documents.

Derek grins as everything goes as smoothly as he thought it would, quietly logging off and leaving everything as untouched as he had arrived before sending everything over to his contact. Getting in was always easy but getting out, now that was the tricky part, one that didn't go according to plan tonight.

When he's sneaking down the last hallway he needs before he's home free, he turns the corner just a second too late before he hears a gunshot followed by a sharp pain to his right side. There wasn't time to delay, to stop and evaluate the damage that was done, he runs as fast as he could manage, a hand pressed up against the injury. "Fuck..." He hisses under his breath as he tries to sneak out of one of the windows, not caring that this was the second floor, he needed to get out and this was the fastest way.

That was until there's another gunshot, hitting just below his shoulder blade this time as he falls out the window. This wasn't how it was supposed to go. If he lives through this, he's retiring. Fuck this. He groans in pain as he tries to sit up from the shrubbery he landed on, struggling a little to get on his feet and run off the property before more guards decide to use him for target practice.

Trying to climb up an ivy-covered wall was a battle all its own before he falls on the ground on the other side. His car was parked just down the block as tries to move as quickly as possible, his hands searching for his phone as he brings up Dmitri's contact once more.

"H-Hey, I fucked up and I need... ugh... I need you to call mom to come over. I'll be home as quickly as I can." He says through shallow breaths as soon as he reaches his car, pulling off his bloodstained gloves with his teeth to get to his car keys. The drive home was going to be hell, his hands struggling to put his keys in the ignition as he kicks the car in gear and calls Gabe.

"Hey... You are so gonna hate me, but um, I got hit pretty bad and driving sucks right now.." He says as he pulls the mask off and tosses it in the passenger's seat.
