THE ALPHA/BETA/OMEGA MEME

In our world, sexual roles are commonly defined by genders -- male or female or other, by sexualities -- gay or straight, bi or asexual or in-between. But what if they were defined by something else entirely?

Alpha/Beta/Omegaverse is a fusion of fanfiction tropes and animalistic behavior. In this world, sexual roles are divided into three categories: the Alphas (the dominant, the protective and the aggressive), the Betas (ordinary humans) and the Omegas (submissive, fertile and able to carry children).

CONTENT WARNING: Below the cut contains descriptions of animalistic sexual behavior as applied to humans, situations of dubious consent, explicit situations, mpreg, and scenarios of societal oppression. Click with caution!

ROLES:
1 - The Alpha.
* Stereotypically type A personalities.
* Anatomically: Males have a penis; females may have a penis in addition to a vagina.
* Alphas knot their mates, meaning that the base of the penis swells and locks them inside their mate while they produce copious amounts of semen in an effort to breed.
* Strong sense of smell.
* Near an Omega in heat, they experience a compulsion to mate that is almost impossible to overcome.
* Alphas may go into rut, which is their equivalent of Omega heat, and drives them to mate.

2 - The Beta.
* Ordinary human being.
* Males have penises; females have vaginas.
* Can mate to anyone.
* Might be able to smell hormones of Omegas and Alphas, but will not be overwhelmingly affected by them.

3 - The Omega.
* Stereotypically submissive, quiet, intelligent and less physically able.
* Female anatomy is similar to Betas; males are self-lubricating and may have either an external or internal vaginal setup.
* Regularly go into heat, which involves being overcome by the urge to mate. They are unable to consent while in heat.
* May be made compliant by a bite to the neck. However, that may also induce a mating bond.
* Often regarded as second-class citizens or prizes to be won.

SITUATIONS:
1 - Bonding - Love at first sight. You've spotted your soulmate. You can smell them, you can feel them, you know that they'll be with you until the end of your days. Unless there's something between the two of you. It could be age - maybe one of you has to wait until the other has reached maturity. It could be that the bond is one-sided, and the other has yet to fall in love. It could be an unwanted bond, or society could have divided you into different places. Is your love strong enough to conquer?

2 - Heat/Rut - The need is coming on you strong. Everyone for a half-mile around can smell it. Better find someone to ride it out with, or hole yourself up in a room with a few bottles of water and a durable sex toy. And you'd better hope that there isn't someone out there who will take advantage of your pliable state. Best case scenario, there might be a Beta who can take care of you, or fend off anyone too predatory.

3 - Pregnancy - Whether through a heat or not, you're pregnant. Congratulations - or condolences. Is it time to start a family, or time to start panicking?

4 - Suppressants - You're using suppressants to keep yourself on an even hormone cycle, skipping heats, or maybe pretending to pass as a different class of society. After all, Omegas might want to be in the military, where they're not usually allowed - or an Alpha might want to take a job in a university or as a nurse. Shouldn't they be allowed to, if their hormones are suppressed? Just hope that you don't miss a dose.

5 - Mistaken Identity - That friend that you always thought was an Alpha, or an Omega, or a neutral Beta, turns out to be something entirely different, and your world is turned absolutely upside down. Does it challenge your preconceptions? Or does it just ruin the balance between you two?

6 - Unlikely Pairs - After all, there's no actual reason that Alphas have to mate with Omegas. Maybe two Omegas can satisfy each other. Or two Alphas. Or your intended mate could easily be a Beta. Maybe this is just about breaking out of your pre-established role and becoming something new.

7 - Manifestation - In some cases, an individual may not know they are Omega, Beta or Alpha until their first heat/rut/manifestation, usually happening in early teen years. It may take you by surprise; it may be a blessing, or may be a deep disappointment.

8 - Other - Adventures in getting jobs, making families, fighting bad guys, and anything else you can come up with!

No. She isn't. She really isn't. She is very far from okay, still, and even though he's acting way less concerning right now and not angry at her, she thinks she needs to hear it for sure. "You're not... mad?"

"Mad? Why the hell would I be mad?" There's a frown now as he takes a step towards her, wondering if that's what had amped up her fear levels earlier. "Oh, Jesus. You didn't think I was pissed at you, did you? Oh, god. I'm sorry, Foggy. I'm not. Not... no. Not at all."

"Okay," she says, and if he was still uncertain about the source of her fear earlier, then the shaky relief in her voice now probably just confirmed it for him. It's not like... it's not like she'd expected him to be angry like that, she's pretty sure she knows him better than that, but... still. "Good."

"But... that still leaves us with a problem. Your... well. Whatever it is you're taking, it's wearing off. I'm not going to be the only one that notices, Foggy." His nostrils flared as he took another sniff of the air, sensing her fear lessening, but that only made the other scents that much sweeter. "Do you have somewhere to go? Someone to..."

Nope. He couldn't finish that question, his hand gripping his cane again, twisting it with enough force that the rubber head split.

She's kind of distracted for a moment by the fact that he just broke his cane.

"I was supposed to be okay for a couple more days." Was, because clearly she's breaking through the scent-blockers already, and it's anyone's guess if that means her heat's going to start early. "I guess - I could go to the medical center if it comes to that." They're required by law to have some safe, secure rooms available for omegas in heat, but it's not a perfect solution. It sucks, honestly; those rooms smell overwhelmingly like hospital and disinfectants on their best day, and it's stressful as hell to try to get through a heat in a place that doesn't smell familiar or safe. But it's doable.

He needs to keep his mouth shut. He needs to not say what he wants to say. He needs to-, "Would you like another option?"

He needs to smash his head into a wall to get through the fog of alpha pheromones so he can think clearly, is what he obviously needs to fucking do.

Oh. That is. Foggy's not sure what to say at first because a few minutes ago she thought he was friendship-endingly mad at her, and now he's... he's offering to help her with her heat? Unless she totally misunderstood what he just said? God, she hopes not, because her every instinct is screaming at her that she'd be an idiot to turn it down.

But. "That, um. That depends?"

"On?" He, of course, wasn't thinking that far ahead. In his mind, all his thoughts were centered around her being an omega, which he would fully process later, and her needing him. For whatever she needed, he couldn't stand the idea of turning her down. Whether it was finding her somewhere more comfortable to be during it, or battening down the hatches and riding it out with her, he was okay with any outcome -- as long as she stayed his friend. His Foggy.

She breathes out. "On whether or not you'd still want to make that offer if you weren't, um. Standing in my immediate vicinity."

Because as much as she'd love to say yes, fuck yes, I want whatever you're offering, it's not worth it if he gets away from her pheromones and immediately regrets it.

He had to stop himself from just answering 'yes' right off the tip of his tongue. She deserved an actual answer. Starting to fold up his cane, he aimed his ear towards her again, trying to focus on her heartbeat instead of her scent. "You're not in full heat, Foggy. You've barely started it, if at all. I still have... mostly control of my senses, and... okay. I understand you're concerned about my overreaction on the way here, but I think that was more about me being pissed off that someone would hurt you, or want to, than... pheromones."

Cane folded, he slid the elastic around the bundle, giving her another crooked smile. "Would you offer the same if I missed my suppressants and went into rut?"

It's... well. It's a compelling case, mostly because it's a very lucid case, particularly for a guy who was growling at random alphas that had the nerve to exist near her just a few minutes ago.

"Yeah," she says. "If you wanted... yeah. I would."

He nodded, because she wasn't afraid anymore, and he could focus on other things. Like the scent of her shampoo mingling in with the way she always smelled. It danced on the tip of his nose, making it wrinkle for a moment. "Then it looks like we have a few decisions to make. Like what it is you want and... where you want to be."

Because if her roommate walked in on them, or tried to, while he was in full rut with her... that would be a bad thing.

What it is you want is a way more difficult question to deal with right now, so she puts it aside for the moment in favor of where you want to be. "Well - not here, obviously, because I have a roommate I would like to still be able to look in the eye next week. The medical center's still an option, but - " Ugh. "Those rooms are kind of terrible. Functional, but - terrible."

"There are the, ah, private hotels designed for such instances. They can provide isolated rooms with all the perks, along with food for... however long you need to be there." A private room that could be for a single party or a couple, ones that had scent blockers built into the walls so alphas weren't busting through into other rooms for an omega, or the other way around. He thought about the money he'd been saving up for a new suit, something court-worthy, and he was already whittling down through it mentally for a room for-- "How long do your... ah, do they last?"

"Yeah. They're kind of... pricey, though?" And neither of them are exactly rolling in money.

"They last a few days, usually? But sometimes they're - " She bites her lip. "I had one last five days, but that wasn't... normal. Usually two to three days."

"I've been saving a little. Doing some tutoring on the side, and there's still the, ah, money from..." From his dad. He tried not to use it unless he had to; most of it had gone to college, but drastic times called for dipping into drastic funds. "Whatever way you want to go, Foggy, I've got your back."

Of course, now he was thinking about five days of being locked in a room with her, both of them lost to those primal urges and he could smell his own pheromones mixing into the room. Shit.

It's a good thing he doesn't finish that sentence, actually, because Foggy would definitely feel weird about him using money from his dad for her stupid heat. "I could contribute some. Pool our resources. Um." The um comes out when she realizes she's not the only one, ah, projecting through pheromones.

He feels the heat rise to his cheeks as he blushes, moving his folded cane from hand to hand as he fidgets. Great. He was supposed to be able to control himself better. Hell, he was on suppressants at the moment -- but he knew that if he got in a room with her and her heat hit, that wouldn't mean shit. He'd go into full rut and that would be that. "What-- ah, whatever works best for you. But either way, it should be sooner than later. Your... scent is coming through."

"Yeah. I should - I should probably get off campus soon unless I want - " Unless she wants to blow all her hard work with making people think she's a beta and risk every day being like York's class, and there's a little spike of anxiety in her scent at the thought.

So. No. Not a good option.

"I probably only have, like - " She pauses and concentrates, pays attention to what her body is telling her. The way her skin prickles and the faint ache in her abdomen aren't exactly pre-heat, but they're not business as usual, either. "A day at this rate, maybe?"

He takes a step closer, tossing his cane in the direction of her bed as he reached out for her, the hint of anxiety in her scent making him react without thought. He grabs her arm, holding it, trying not to pull her in closer as he draws in her scent. "Soon, then. Like... now?" Because if he was going to have to go back to his dorm alone, he was going to have to do it before her scent got him to a point where that wasn't an option for him.

"I, um. Maybe? I should go, at least, I could meet you somewhere if you don't want to skip the rest of the day or have stuff you need to deal with first?" Like... packing whatever, and notifying professors, although he'll probably have a way easier time of it than she did cause of bullshit societal reasons.

"That's what phones are for." And anything that involved her and him in a room together for two to five days would likely not involve clothing. His fingers gave her arm a slight squeeze, Matt just a little taller than her as he directed his face her way, eyes not-focusing on her lips. "I'm not feeling especially... inclined to leave you just yet."

"Okay."

It's probably not a great idea to be initiating close contact at the moment because they're still at Columbia and they have things to do, still, but - she hugs him anyway.

It's been a shitty day. A shitty several days, that she's been handling on her own, which is fine cause Foggy can handle it, mostly, but now there's Matt and he's - at least for the next few days - her alpha, and - basically, no one would blame her if she wanted a little comfort, she's pretty sure.

His arms wind around her almost of their own volition, Matt tucking her head under his chin, soothing her with his presence and scent. He was a little unsure about just exactly where this was going to go; he'd had a few ruts before, but generally locked up by himself and dosed up, or one time with a willing beta to take the edge off. He'd never lost himself with an omega before, never been around one who wasn't already 'taken' or locked up tight.

That it was Foggy seemed to just make his protective urges spike up to an eleven. "Okay. It's okay. Whatever happens, we'll manage it together, right? Nelson and Murdock."

"Yeah." It sounds nice, the way he says their names together, and she lets her brain shut off for a second while she just relaxes into his arms and his scent. They're not out of the woods yet; they still have arrangements to make, and she needs to get off campus before it's so obvious what she is that she won't be able to hide it anymore. But she'll figure out how to deal with that in a minute. Right now, she's in an alpha's arms, her alpha's arms, and he's sweet and kind and just... ridiculously attractive, and she's not going to have to worry about getting through her heat alone because he's going to take care of her.

Right now, that's about all she can think to ask for. And right now, her body's definitely starting to go into pre-heat, although it's way too early for anyone with weaker senses or even Foggy herself to notice, and they can probably kick that estimate of a day down to more like four to six hours.

She starts to disentangle herself from the hug, reluctant. "--Right. We should go."
