How charmingly beautiful! How romantic! Who says the old ways have gone out of style?

But other reasoning behind the decision could be from the serious - you both want to escape imprisonment, an oppressive atmosphere, or a miserable destiny - to the more lighthearted. Maybe an adventure is just what you need, where you'll finally get to see the world...and, slowly, fall in love. Because that's what the crux of all this is: even if the escape started out as mere convenience, you both want to stay close and work together. In the end, when you've finally run where you want to be and the danger, if any, has passed, you may find you don't want to go your separate ways.

[It's almost funny. They spent most of the year following the twists and turns of Jason and Polly's story, star-crossed lovers who ended only half as bad as Romeo and Juliet but with far more drama in the mix.

Now here he is, everything he owns in a backpack over his shoulder, waiting for Betty in the shadows behind Pop's with a pocket full of cash, a chest tight with nerves, and a shaking leg. He's wearing the jacket that for a moment he worried nearly ended things between them, but not because he's planning to join the Serpents. No, he just doesn't want anyone to recognize him, his hat tucked away in his bag and his hair slicked back uncomfortably with gel.

It's just for now. Soon they'll be far from this town and the curse of hate that hangs over everyone in it. He just has to wait a little longer. Betty will show.
