There are many supernatural beings that congregate in groups for survival or protection or just for companionship, not unlike humans. Witches have covens. Vampires have nests. But none of those have connections that can compare to the bond of a werewolf pack.

You should know. You're part of one, either born a werewolf or turned. For humans, blood is thicker than water; for wolves, the pack is to the bone. Of course, with humans, romantic relationships can complicate closeness of other sorts. That's not the case with werewolf pairings, as they tend to grow out of natural pack dynamics and are viewed as just another facet of life. The only difference is that werewolves tend to treat relationships, even potential would-be-mates, with extreme seriousness.

After all, you'll fight for your pack, so you'll fight for your mate, won't you?

[The question might not have distracted her, but the ripping of the curtains to pull around himself did, something that had a low growl slipping past her lips before she slammed them shut.]

Not my fault.

[No, she was blaming this entirely on her wolf. Her wolf who wanted to go run and pin him up against the wall, wanted to turn and rub herself against him, wanted to--]

Cover up more.

[Glowering at her as he tied the curtains in a knot along the side of his waist, he gestured back at her animatedly.]

You're going to act like I'm the only one promenading around here? You're not even wearing a top!

[His announcement made her look down, her arms crossing over herself reflexively before she remembered that she gave no fucks. Or wasn't supposed to. It had her moving to place her hands pointedly at her hips, holding her sheet in place as she walked towards him.]

And? You got a problem with breasts? It's 2017. Women parade in public. We breastfeed. We... enjoy beaches.

[The stammer was over the idea of breastfeeding, because her wolf was suddenly almost violently happy with the idea of her feeding a child at her bosom. Not happening.]

If you can walk around topless, so can I.

[He keeps looking awkwardly between her chest and her face, because it's hard to remember how angry he is with her being so distracting. And luscious. And distracting.]

I'm really not interested in getting a suffragette speech from you right now. It's not the bloody point!

Then what is?

[That was her wolf, pushing her to push back at him, making her step forward more, step into his space, looking up at him as if she was daring him to make an actual point.]

[He lifted his chin up, trying to affect a certain amount of lofty disinterest. With the amount of effort he had to put into keeping his face a blank it probably wasn't working.]

It's not about your sexual liberation, or whatever. I need you to get covered up for the same reason you need it of me. Don't be stupid about this.

You calling me stupid?

[Stupidly, ironically, she stepped into him, pushing at his chest with a finger, pheromones rising. It seemed whatever had stirred between them wasn't done. Not with the scent of him lingering on her. Not with her own scent wafting off him. Not with her wolf telling her it wasn't enough. Not yet.

Another shove.]

Maybe I'm a bit more capable of control than you are.

[Hardly, if the way she wanted to stroke her hand down his chest was anything to judge by.]

I really doubt that.

[His voice is gravelly, hoarse with the feelings of desire he's trying to shake. Yet still he manages to be sardonic, and superior, and annoyed in the look he gives her in response to those words.

He tilted his head back further as she got closer, as if that would somehow help keep her scent at bay. It doesn't. He shifted his weight more to his heels, much as he can do without actually moving back from her.

In response to the shoving, though, that pointed finger that seems to want to linger against his skin, he snatches out a hand to enclose on her wrist, trying to lift her up and back her away until he has her back against the cabin wall, him standing in front of her to try and pin her in place.]

You don't know what it means to be one of our kind. And that's dangerous. Your lack of awareness is only going to hurt you, if you insist on being so reckless. Especially with matters like this.

[If it had been anyone else, they would have been backhanded across the cabin. Maybe even through the wall. But he grabbed her wrist and backed her up against a wall and she felt herself throb between her legs. He pinned her there and her eyes went to his mouth, a flush spreading over her cheeks, down along her neck as she remembered how it had felt on her.

She had to blink herself back from being distracted, wrist still in his grip, his face snarling down at her with that smug superiority, and she laughed.]

So I'm a reckless asshole. I'm still here, aren't I? Not dead in a ditch somewhere. Seems to be working out fine for me. And this? There is no this. This is just... you. Doing something. You're doing some wolf trick and yeah, fine, I'm too human to figure it out. That doesn't make me the idiot.

How many times do I have to explain it to you? This is not some trick. And it's certainly not me. Do you think I ever wanted to feel this, towards anyone?

[There's fear and maybe even a tiny flickering note of desperation, buried beneath his anger at her, his cold impatience. It might be otherwise easily missed but it resonates a bit in the raggedness of his rising voice.

Briefly his grip on her tightens, a squeeze, before his wolf makes him stop. They can't hurt their mate. Not when they're supposed to be protecting her.]

I have no idea. I don't know you. I don't know your clan. There's only one wolf I do know and he's going to be dead as soon as I can manage it.

[She feels both the clench and the release, her wolf not the slightest bit irritated -- unlike her human part. She wanted to swat him in his stupid smug face. And then kiss it better.

... No. That wasn't... goddammit.]

[He huffs, impatient but confident in what he's saying.]

You're never going to be able to do it alone. You're a rogue wolf, love. You lack the strength you need, that you get from being part of a pack.

[She gave him a look. One, flat, bald look. Then she turned, right hand fisting as she punched it into the wall behind her. The wood cracked and broke. Sorry, Shaw. This cabin now had a hole in it.]

What was that you were saying about strength?

[He doesn't flinch. He good as expected she'd pull something like that, if anything he's surprised she didn't just take it out on him. Surprised and relieved.]

Not that kind of strength. I'm talking strength that only comes from community, from support.

[He leans in more, the hand not still holding her against the wall above her head so he can be right in her face, teeth showing as he talks.]

You were never able to break away from Kilgrave on your own, were you? None of you were. No matter how much you wanted it. Now why do you think that is?

[She was surprised. Not that he was in her face again, but that he hadn't gotten it. It made her laugh right back at him, something short and bitter.]

You think that has anything to do with strength? Community? Please. You don't have a goddamn idea what you're talking about. Or what it takes to get away from him. You still think this is just some goddamn wolf thing. It's not. It affects humans to, so explain that to me, mister fucking smartass.

You're the one who doesn't have a clue.

[He's showing teeth now, trying not to lose patience with her again, even as he clings to superiority.]

You want an explanation, fine. But you tell me something first. If you can't resist his power, if nobody can, then how exactly are you planning on going in there and taking him down?

I figured I'd just pick up a car and throw it at him. Or drop one from above. I don't need to have my hands on him. He needs to be taken by surprise, otherwise he'll throw someone else in the way, or one of his contingency plans would come into play. He's sneaky, not stupid. I'm the only one that knows him.

But hey, go right ahead and throw all your goddamn clan at him. Hope you enjoy being alone, because you'll be the only one left.

If I thought I could handle things alone I'd have walked away a long time ago. But unlike you, I was raised to understand our nature. And I know that a wolf on its own will always be weak.

[He emphasizes this word like it's the greatest sin one could have.]

Make a plan, fine. But you won't be able to carry it through on your own. You'll need help. You'll need us. We're your pack now. You're with me, and that's how it works.

[Not entirely true, but she liked to cling to that like it was. However, there was very real shock on her face when he said that last bit, eyes wide as she reached a hand between them and shoved.]

What the fuck did you just say? I don't have a pack. I'm not... no. This is just a fucking, literally, fling. This is two people doing... having... no. I don't care what some goddamn inner wolf says.

[He lets her push him, stumbling back about two paces with hands raised as he breathes out a snide laugh. He knew that was how she'd respond. Made wolves, they just don't get it. They never do. They have to be taught.]

It doesn't matter. You're wrong. That's what I was trying to tell you earlier, why this is such a big deal. Not my fault you wouldn't listen to me.

No? Well, how about this, asshole.

[Reaching down, she grabbed the edges of her sheet, pulling it up to cover her properly, like a toga, then she headed for the door. Her plan? Get the fuck out of here, away from him, away from this crazy world and go back to pretending she was just a weird, fucked up human.]

[Her inner wolf was not happy with the situation, keening a whine in her head, but Jessica was used to hearing things she didn't want to. To doing things she didn't want to. She could ignore that thumping in her chest, ignore his scent wrapping around her like physical bands, begging her to come back. No. Fuck him, and fuck this shit.]

[He turns to the side to watch her walk away, expression mostly just incredulous.]

You're really gonna walk outside? Like that? How far do you think you'll even get?

Far enough. You think this is the first time I've had to deal with being naked in some place I don't know? I have a sheet. I consider that a fucking upgrade.

[She reached for the door, pulling it open and letting it bang against the wall as she stepped out. No, her wolf was not happy, but neither was she. Pff. She belonged to him. She was sick to death of goddamn male wolves telling her she belonged to anyone.

Muttering to herself, she picked a direction opposite the way she'd come from, then headed off.]

[He wants to follow her, of course: it's a mixture of protectiveness and possession. His wolf doesn't want his mate to leave and also worries what she might run into out there.

His human self doesn't give a fuck. Or so he tells himself.

The desire to follow is bordering on painful. Some perverse mix of arousal and hunger and a strange kind of fear. That her getting hurt will physically hurt him.

He makes two fists, nails digging into his palms, and reasons with himself. How far can she really get? She'll be back, he's sure of it.

And if not he can follow her scent.]

[She was not going to be back. Owen could get used to learning just how stubborn Jessica could be. She grumbled and kept pulling at the sheet when it got caught on things, heading up for the road but keeping just shy of being seen from it. If there was a road, it had to lead somewhere. And somewhere along the way there might be a house or a hotel or something. She could figure out what to do then and there.

And then it would just be a matter of tracking down Kilgrave. She could bring his head back to Owen as a tro--

Goddammit, no. She was never going to see him again. No matter how good he smelled. Or tasted. Or felt inside her. God... he'd felt so damn good. She was covered in his stupid scent, had his come inside her and making a mess on her thighs. She needed to get cleaned up so she could stop thinking about him. But that didn't stop her from walking further from Shaw clan territory.]
