"Okay," he said, relieved. Jyn wasn't one to push him when it came to something like this. Other things? She'll push and push more than was necessary.

Sighing, he turned out the lights, but felt wide awake. There went a good night's sleep. "Do you still remember living inside the Empire when you were a child?" He asked. She spoke to him about it before, but not in depth.

She trusted that he'd tell her if he needed to, but more importantly, if he wanted her to know. If it was too difficult, it wouldn't do to poke and prod until he snapped at her. She could and would, though, offer any comfort that she could.

"Mm ... ", she hummed, really taking the time to ponder the question. "Sometimes? Not very clearly, I remember a city and how busy it was, but not much else." There was Lah'mu, too, but that was harder to speak about. The losses she experienced there still felt painfully real.

"Mmm," he said after she spoke. He himself was from Fest - a very cold, very icy planet. He didn't talk much about it either.

He sighed and pulled the covers up. "I'm sorry I woke you up," he said after a moment. While she had no official assignment and she was still healing from her foot injury, she probably didn't want to be woken up in the middle of the night.

She knew that much, at least, even though they've never really gone into detail about their childhoods. Or ... what passed for their childhoods, in any case. Some things were just too difficult to talk about.

"It's fine", she murmured, urging him to come closer and into the circle of her arms. "I can always go back to sleep. Making sure that you're okay is more important." Besides, it wasn't as though she was a heavy sleeper, anyway, so it wasn't as though she was disturbed all that much.

"Okay," he said after a long moment of debating about what he wanted to say next. It still shocked Cassian how kind she was to him - how much she cared about him even more than her own self. The only way he knew how to return the favor was by treating her with the same level of kindness - maybe even more even though he didn't know how.

"Sleep," he said. "I'll try to also."

They were both still learning the ins and outs of intimacy in all its forms, and how to navigate being together in all ways, but Jyn would like to think that they've fallen into something ... comfortable, and sure, and just for them. And she was very happy with Cassian, which she hoped she proved with every day that passed.

She was quiet for a moment as she burrowed as closely as she could. She sighed, and pressed a kiss to his jaw, and murmured, "You do know how I feel about you, yes? That it's not - that I would do anything for you? You know that I ... I'm - "

"I love you," he said, finally, the words he had wanted to say earlier forcing their way out of his mouth because he could no longer hold it in. He loved her - all of her - everything that made Jyn, Jyn, he loved. It sounded so foreign to his ears when he said it - he didn't think he ever said those words out loud, expect probably when he was a child. But it felt right - the moment felt right.

Yes, that.

That is what she'd been feeling for so long, and fighting to keep from saying, simply because she didn't want it to be too much, too soon, after everything they'd been through. But she knew it deep down in her bones, and it was in every glance, every word, every kiss and every touch they shared.

And although the words feel unfamiliar on her tongue, she wanted nothing more than to say them in return, for Cassian to know that she meant them with every fiber of her being.

"I love you, too."

Through good days, and bad days, and every sleepless night.

Ever since they came back from Scarif, even when he was in the medbay recovering from his injuries, he knew, deep down before he even had the words in his head, that he loved her. They hadn't known each other for a long time, they didn't know much about each other's pasts, but it didn't matter. When Cassian looked at Jyn, he didn't just feel an overwhelming need to protect her - it was more than that.

He smiled at her in the dark. "You have no idea how happy it makes me hearing you say that."

There had been the flicker of something as they'd stood on that beach, wrapped in each other's arms, awaiting the end. But Jyn hadn't known what it was until she found him in medbay, bruised and broken but alive, and that empty space in her heart filled to bursting. And those feelings had only been growing since then.

She just hadn't known how to voice them properly. But now, it felt like a huge weight had been lifted from her shoulders, and she laughed softly, surprised, but mostly thrilled to know that Cassian felt exactly the same.

"So tell me", she replied, unable to keep from grinning like a fool. "You have no idea how happy you've made me."

He didn't need to have the lights on to know that she was grinning from ear to ear - he could just listen to her voice.

Laughing a little, he wrapped his arms around her tightly, wanting and needing her as close as possible. "I think this is the happiest I've ever been," he said softly, rubbing his hands against her.

There was probably a lightness there that had never been there before. But then, Jyn never thought that she would ever feel like this, nor have those feelings reciprocated. But here she was, and she was never going back.

And how she loved the sound of his laugh, even now, all curled up and warm, and content in a way that she never knew that she wanted, but now wouldn't give up for anything in the world. "Me, too", she answered, fingertips soft as she traced the outline of his jaw. "Say it again?"

"I love you," he said without hesitation. He never knew how much joy it was to have those words flow so freely from his mouth and to someone he truly loved. "I love you, Jyn," he said again, this time with her name. He kissed her.

Jyn hadn't known that it was possible to laugh and cry at the same time, but here she was doing just that; laughing softly into the kisses while a few tears slipped from her eyes and slid down her cheeks, and she had to wonder, however swiftly, if this was all a dream. "I love you", she murmured, certain that she'd never get enough of hearing it and saying it in return. "I love you so much, Cassian."

He could feel the tears as he touched her face with his fingertips. While he wasn't one to cry, he could feel exactly how she felt - being so overwhelmed with emotion, with happiness and contentment, that he couldn't possibly believe it but there it was. "I know," he said, smiling, before kissing her again.

Jyn cried rarely, if ever, but in this instance, there just was no helping it, and no reason to try to hide it, not when she was so happy. And for the moment, nothing else mattered, just the pair of them, and what they felt for each other. "Don't ever stop, please - "

"Never," he murmured against her lips before kissing her again - kissing themselves breathless. The Alliance, the Empire, they all melted away - it was just them in the entire galaxy - only them.

As it should be; no worries, no distractions, no interruptions (hopefully), just the simple pleasure of being with the man that she loved with every fiber of her being, every breath, and every beat of her heart. "Never", she repeated, her voice a whisper. "I promise."

At her promise, he kissed her again and again and again, every inch of her face that he could reach, he kissed. Cassian had never known he could be this affection, but here he was, with this amazing woman who somehow came into his life, turned it upside down, and made it make sense.

She returned each kiss with as much passion and enthusiasm as she could muster, which was not all that difficult, all things considered. She gasped, and groaned, and whimpered and clutched at him tightly in order to pull him closer all the still, and she never thought she'd ever have this, but here she was, and all the happier for it. He'd been the first person to really believe in her, to trust her, to love her, and she wasn't going to give any of this up without a fight.

"I have to work in the morning," he said reluctantly, looking at her. As much as he'd love to continue, duty called once the sun came up. Even with their own private room and the happiness and love shared only between the two of them, there was still a war outside the door. Cassian had to continue to play an integral part in it.

"I know", she answered, just as unwilling to actually call an end to the moment. For as much as she'd love to continue with the celebration, and she would, there were duties to attend to much sooner than she'd like. But someday, maybe, she hoped - "Do you think that we'll ever have something ... different? Where we can just be us without all of ... this?"

"I think so," he replied. "I think you and I tipped the scales in the Alliance's favor. I have no doubt that someday we'll be able to have a life of our own." With a house and children and all the things he wanted for them.

If Cassian was so certain of that fact, Jyn's got no reason to feel otherwise. It was something to hope for, and something to work for, and she could absolutely remind herself that it will be worth everything done in order to get there. A home, a family, all the things she never dared to believe that she could have. "To someday, then. I look forward to it."

"Me, too." He kissed her lips one last time and then her forehead, his lips lingering there for just a second. "I love you, Jyn."
