Autumn in Tokyo doesn't feel like Autumn in Fukui. It's neither a good nor bad different, simply a matter-of-fact kind of different. It's in the air, the sounds, the smells, it rides under Arata's clothes and through his skin, trailing over skin and lodging in the back of his mind in a constant, low-grade awareness.

It also feels different from when he was a child attending school in Tokyo before they had to move. Then years of seasons in Tokyo made the seasons in Fukui recede, and now coming back to Tokyo threaten to make the experience of the seasons in Fukui fade in the near future. Would he really come back here? For University?

Autumn in Tokyo had fewer maple trees, he thought this to himself as he stepped off the train and onto the platform, the clear sky above showing the moon clearly against the night sky as he padded down street, one hand grasping the strap of his bag over his shoulder and the other holding a small scrap of paper with an address. It was later than he was expecting and the low sound of nighttime reveling spills over from the streets that lead to the more urban center of the distinct. He should have thought this through a little more, gotten a better sense of where the guest house was, or contacted someone to say he was visiting spontaneously.

Arata didn't have any of those things, and instead did the next best thing given the circumstances: ask.

"I'm sorry to bother you--" Maybe he should've picked better than the guy who looked like a delinquent, but it's a bit late for that. "--do you know where..."

He pauses, squinting at the scrap of paper in the poor light "... LaKeyaki Chambre Zen guest house is?"

It's not close. It's across the sprawl of Shinjuku bars and clubs and across Shinjuku Goyen National Garden. Maybe this is the last thing Kusakabe wants to deal with at this time of night from a total stranger.
