"I know," he said and he did, but that made his guilt that much heavier and deeper. Why did he have to live while the others didn't? He'd done so many things for the Alliance that he didn't even question - all the death by his hands, all the immoral tasks that were asked of him...he did it all and he kept doing them without question - as if he was numb to the fact that what he was doing was wrong - but it was for the Alliance, right? That made things difference.
