I really enjoyed that counseling/group therapy meme a few months ago!

Or are we talking about totally new memes here? 8|a

Mixed bag/Lucky dip meme. The top-level tagger posts their name, etc. in the subject line and then lists ten possible scenarios/scenes/events they really want to play out. Anything can go, whether it's old ideas from other memes or just new scenarios they have always wanted to try. Taggers pick the scenario to go with, or use an RNG to choose.

Ones that are ACTUAL AU versions. Not with little, minor tweaks, but with, "Instead of Mary Winchester dying, it was John plastered up on the ceiling. So now let's have a Sam and Dean raised by their hunter mother looking for their father's killer."

Actual dramatic dynamic changes that aren't a little bump in the path deviations, but a massive turn of the wheel and a whole new path forged.

Why have you not been posting to Bakerstreet lately?

(Anonymous) 2012-08-18 08:07 am (UTC)(link)
Let's be honest here, most of the memes lately have been lucky to break past 300 comments.

Is it really just the beginning of school and the usual influx of smut memes? Or do you think that bakerstreet has gotten a bit worn out.

Inquiring minds would like to know. Especially if you think there's a way to get you interested again.

We need fewer memes posts per day, for one. Eight or nine is ridiculous.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-18 09:59 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think complaining about how some other people are having fun RP-ing stuff you don't like is especially productive, quite frankly.

What about just making/reposting more memes that you do like, and calling together people who do like the sort of things to play in them?

Re: People like different things, OK?

I don't police my friend's rp'ing. If they don't tag in to a meme that I like, I'm not going to nag them to do it.

From what I'm reading, I think the big problem here seems to boil down to this: posts are not getting the same number of comments as they used to, and the people posting the memes are upset about this.

I don't really think that's a reasonable or a valid "problem". Posting a meme isn't about trying to get more comments than another meme or "succeeding". It's not a competition, it's not school, it's not your job. If you get the most comments, there's no blue ribbon, no gold star, no promotion. If you get very few comments, it doesn't mean you're a loser, it doesn't prevent you getting into a good college, it doesn't mean you get fired.

People need to relax a bit on the competitiveness front with this stuff. The point of posting a meme shouldn't be popularity, it should be providing an atmosphere for people to play and have fun. So long as that's happening, isn't that really all that counts?

live action "AUs" are getting out of hand, especially mcu and nolanverse. if you use a live action pb for this, you're a cockhop, pure and simple. especially if the character has no business being in the version.

mutants don't exist in mcu (neither does spider-man, for that matter, so stop labeling your spider-man muses mcu, no matter how much you want steve and tony to be peter's daddies), and the batfam doesn't exist in nolanverse, at least in the traditional sense. sidekicks wouldn't happen.

just play from the comics or the cartoons, then interact with the nolanverse or mcu characters.

New Posting Guideline Suggestions

(Anonymous) 2012-08-18 05:00 pm (UTC)(link)
This would be more a matter of etiquette/self-policing than an enforcement thing, but it seems like a good rule of thumb for this place would be that no one should post a new meme while another meme that they posted is still on the front page.

Everyone would help everyone else (and the community at large) if they would just have some consideration for each other and some awareness that we're all sharing the same space. Waiting until one of your posts is off the front page before posting a new one would be a simple and polite thing to do. And it wouldn't prevent anyone from posting new memes either, just modulate and even things out a bit.

Likewise, it would be a good rule of thumb for no one to post a meme while one very similar to it is still on the front page.

These are simple things that we can all do to help the community, and no one should be put out by them. A little politeness won't hurt you.

Re: New Posting Guideline Suggestions

(Anonymous) 2012-08-18 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)

One more thing that occurred to me: part of the reason short, easy memes like TFLN get more tags than big, complicated memes is because of this attitude of "It's just a meme, so who cares if people thread-drop?" which is something I saw on ACJ the other day.

I don't give a crap if I throw a silly one-liner into TFLN and nobody responds, but if I spent thirty minutes writing up a complex scenario for an AU or horror meme and get ignored, or everyone drops the thread after three comments, then yeah, my butt is going to be hurt. Not to the extent of namedropping the person everywhere, but I probably won't tag them next time around. If I spent time on it, I put effort into it, so probably I was excited about playing it out. The thread-dropping is discouraging people from bothering with tagging other people too.

There's an attitude of "LOL MEMES DON'T COUNT" a lot of the time, which I think is contributing to a hesitation to engage with some of the heavier, more complicated meme scenarios.

I feel like we're kind of taking the worst of both the laid-back and the Type A attitudes here. It's "memes don't count, so don't get upset if the thread gets dropped, because people should be ignoring them for games anyway" right alongside "omg rp is serious business this meme sucks because it only got ten comments, and the player is a failure".

Could we maybe try "put in a little effort if the person you're tagging is clearly putting in some effort" alongside "just ignore the memes you don't like and play in ones you do" instead?

(Anonymous) 2012-08-18 06:14 pm (UTC)(link)
What about just making some memes for plot-heavy tags?

another reason people aren't tagging is because half the usernames you see crop up in each meme are ones you're already waiting for tags from on older memes.

i'm not going to tag somebody who posts on the first two pages of every other meme but takes three days to answer a tag.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-18 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
This, exactly. When I'm waiting on a tag from someone, but I see them popping up in twenty other memes, I just throw up my hands and figure that I'm not going to get that tag in a timely fashion, nor is the thread actually going to go anywhere.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-18 07:13 pm (UTC)(link)
if filling in a form about what you want and don't want + one sentence about your character is too much work for you, then rp isn't a good hobby for you.

am i the only person who prefers slow taggers, people that take three days to a week to tag? the lackadaisical pace makes me feel like the thread is more of a game than a job, and makes me want to take my time with each tag.

people who churn out 10 300-500 word posts in an hour or two will never cease to amaze me, and never cease to frighten me. i almost never tag people who can do that because i'm scared they'll be frustrated with my slow pace.

Ohhhhkay.

(Anonymous) 2012-08-19 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
The thing is, the people who are complaining about that actually seem to be a rather small minority of the whole.

It seems like most of the people who post in bakerstreet don't seem to think there are too many memes in the first place at all.
