[Levy blinks, tilting her head. She's pretty sure she's heard that before somewhere. It takes her a moment to place it, but then she realizes that she's seen this girl before at the school's library. And if she recalls correctly, she's into lots of old Japanese history, poetry, and legends. They've just never actually had occasion to talk.
But the hilarious look on her face gives her an idea. Levy does like a good prank sometimes. And so, putting on her best spooky face and briefly waving her fingers around, she grabs hold of Hanamaru's poor ticklish feet by the toes. And here comes her best attempt at a scary voice to match.]
I'm the kusu-obake! [tickle demon, which doesn't actually exist, but who's counting] Give me that book or suffer my punishment!
[ dramatic gasp!! ] Could it truly be?! A tickle demon?! And you're after my books?! What a foul creature, targeting innocent maidens such as myself, zura! And taking the form of a harmless young lady- how sly, to have tricked a temple maiden!
[ She hugs the book tighter. ] But I shall not betray Shouhei Ouka-sensei by giving away Nobi to such a creature! Punish me as you like, but i shall protect my books, zura!!
[ All said, of course, in the same dramatic tone. Her delivery is truly worthy of a fist-clenching shounen protagonist. ]
[Oh wow. That went even better than she thought it would. Well, might as well play this out.]
Very well! Then prepare your pure and maidenly feet for my wrath!
[With a haughty laugh, Levy begins tickling at Hanamaru's toes. She's not holding anything back, and even dips her fingers down between them as she goes.]
[She frowns, reaching out to gently pat her foot.]
I probably went a little too far there too. But really, I just want to be friends and talk about books.
[Looking around a little, an idea dawns on her.]
Hey, I know! There's a great hot bath a few rooms over. They mix honey and royal jelly into the water. It's great for your skin! Do you want to check it out together? I'll even give you another massage to make up for all the tickling.
her eyes fly wide open and all the embarrassment from earlier disappears in one fell swoop. talk about books!! a fellow book lover??? and she wants??? to be????? friends???????
maru grabs levy's hands and holds them in hers, staring at levy with sparkling eyes. ]
[Levy's face brightens up right alongside Hanamaru's, giving her hands a little squeeze as she stands up. And after a quick trip to the lockers to put their books away so they don't get wrinkled from all the steam, they're relaxing in the baths!]
Okay, just put your feet up here and relax! I want to hear all about what you're reading. I've been into the old legends of Abe no Seimei lately.
[Levy pats her lap for Hanamaru, splashing the water a bit as she does. But she seems pretty excited to have a book buddy.]
[ Hanamaru isn't entirely sure what's the point of it, but shrugs it off and puts her feet up anyway, and leans in backwards to relax into the warmth of the bathwater. ]
Woah! This is awesome, zura! [ Coughs. Right, they're here to talk! It's very comfortable but the warmth is making her a bit sleepy, and thus difficult to focus. Once you get her to start talking about books, though, it's all but impossible for her to stop. ]
Oh, the legends of Abe no Seimei are fascinating! Maru is really into 20th century postwar literature as of late, zura. I've been reading a lot of Mishima Yukio's works lately, like Kamen no Kokuhaku, and earlier I was reading Shouhei Ouka's Nobi. [ cheerfully: ] It's a story about the helplessness of a deserted soldier and his descent into delirium and darkness in the final days of war! It's really good, zura.
[The massage is mostly just Levy making up for the tickling episode from earlier, since she does genuinely feel bad for embarrassing her. She smiles over at her new friend as she takes her feet in her hands, pressing in at her soles with her thumbs and rotating them in circles while they talk.]
Yeah, I really like all of those old stories about spirits and magic. The Kojiki was really good too - I've been thinking about looking up Motoori Norinaga's study of the text.
[She listens with interest as Hanamaru describes what she's been reading lately, nodding along while the two enjoy the nice soak.]
Maybe I'll check those out too, though. It's interesting to see how much the literary tradition changes in reaction to big events like the war.
your Hanamaru is so cute that my Levy couldn't resist teasing her

Kusu kusu kusu!

In between that, she barely manages to wheeze out: ] You... will not... have me...!
1/2
[Levy smirks, moving her fingers down to Hanamaru's soles next and tickling all over.]
Then I'll have to use my ultimate technique!
[With a sly and confident wink, she starts moving her face toward her feet, waggling her tongue and looking like she's going to lick them...]
2/2
Wow, I really had you going, didn't I?

... Huh?
[ Maru stares like she's not entirely sure what just happened and/or is having trouble processing it. ]

[Levy laughs a little, winking again as she sticks out her tongue.]
I just wanted to know about the book you were reading, but I got a little carried away. Sorry!
[She holds up a hand in the classic 'gomen' gesture before extending it for a shake.]
I'm Levy McGarden. I've seen you around the library at school before, right?

Alongside massive embarrassment.
Her whole face turns red and for a moment she doesn't even say anything, just looks down, stewing in her own shame. ]
...
[ mumbling: ] Maru is embarrassed, zura...
