She'd thought little of it. Soulmates are a dying ideal, the concept of being irrevocably tied to one destined person sounds romantic, but when that person could be halfway across the world -- perhaps literally, for a rural area like Uchiura -- or somebody who could never be part of her life, there's no point chasing after or looking forward to them. Her parents weren't each other's soulmates, and stayed together all the same. It's who you choose, Grandpa would say, not who fate decides for you.
One day, Chika had come up to her excitedly, brandishing the blue-green mark that she found, in such a rush she even managed to leave You struggling to catch up. And they idly wondered who it could be, the way children do. And when she developed her interest in μ's, sometimes they'd joke that it was a pity, the mark wasn't a bear, so Kousaka-san remains unattainable.
And that was that.
Today, though, they are -- or rather, were, in the middle of a discussion about image animals. You and Uchicchii are pretty much a foregone conclusion, Mari insists Dia and Shizuku-chan the penguin are a perfect fit, Maru gets assigned a giant frog that she is growing to adore. Somebody brought up Kanan's love for dolphins, which she rolled with, unthinking, until the realization dawns upon her. Chika should be a lobster, she suggests then, with her best attempt at nonchalance, she's pushy like one, ha ha. Somehow, the idea is accepted.
She stays behind after the meeting comes to a close, apologizing to Mari for not going home together as planned. Chika is the only one left in the clubroom, aside from her.]
Hey. [Abandoning all previous pretenses, she takes the chair opposite, looking at Chika.] We don't have to make it a thing, you know.

it was after kanan came back to school that she realized it, after she and mari and dia were reunited as a single unit. though she makes a good show of looking surprised, pink eyes wide when kanan sits across from her--leaving chika still balancing a mechanical pencil on her nose in what was idle thought.
now, it's anything but idle, and she stares at the laptop screen again.

The meeting. Like, yeah, maybe there isn't a super mikan bug or something we can change it to, but I doubt You has any inspiration to draw a lobster costume right now.
They got on board surprisingly quickly... [Which is probably a hint as to how the members view each other, Chika in particular, come to think of it.] That was unexpected.
