[ It's not a rare magic. Quite common, actually. It of course doesn't mean one has to listen: there are plenty of perfectly happy people together that are not soul mates. At the base of it you are irreversibly connected to your soul mate. Many equate it with love, but that's not necessarily true. Often people get new tattoos just to see if someone they care for matches them. They're painless for one's match so it's usually somewhere visible so that their soul mate can see it and know immediately. Once they're there they're irremovable and impossible to cover up: fate has made its decision and there's no denying it in this way even if one decides to go against the grain.

Many people are happy when one shows up. Many people are ecstatic. Lily Evans feels a pool of dread filling her from head to toe. It's in a place she can cover, high on her left bicep, and she does easily by wearing sleeves. Waits, trying to see if anyone in proximity matches her. No one that she can see either in the Order where she's meant to Spy or the Death Eaters where she's meant to be Genuine. She breathes in, breathes out, and waits.

(She'd hoped it would be James, or perhaps Severus, but no sign from one and the other would never that design if any at all.)

When a second appears it's impossible to hide, too close to the wrist of her right arm and she knows she has to do something. She heads out that very night with Alice to get her own tattoo, coiling vines over her hand and fingers and wrapping around the design at her wrist. Cradling it - or choking it, depending on one's perspective. A crazy part of her hopes that Alice will be the one to match her, sitting so close and clutching her other hand, but she knows she's already matched with Frank.

She kisses Alice on the cheek that evening when they part and they squeeze each other's hands. Alice is one of the only people that knows what she's doing because Alice is steadfast and true and won't tell a soul or stop her. Alice knows she can't stop Lily. So this parting is bittersweet as it always is; Order work before returning to Death Eater headquarters.

In any case it's not particularly late when she's sat on a sofa holding a copy of the prophet and reading over it, combing everything intently. She's back to her usual light and flowing clothing - the things Bellatrix always scoffs over as unbecoming - with all of the ink clearly visible. She's worried but it doesn't show in the set of her shoulders, in the way her legs are drawn up beneath her casually. ]

[ The concept of a soulmate is inconsequential to the Lestranges. They do not marry for love, but, rather, they prioritize the purity of the bloodline and what can be gained from the union of two reputable families. When Rodolphus came of age to choose his wife, he never considered searching for his soulmate as so many others tended toward. He, like the rest of the Lestranges, is more interested in blood purity and creating prominent ties.

Love has no place in his marriage. He needs a partner; not a lover.

There is no ounce of affection between him and Bellatrix. He had picked her out of all the other candidates because he saw the most potential in her. He also knows she will never love him just as he will never love her. It suits them.

His mind has never spared a single thought for his soulmate. If they are out there, he can only hope their paths never cross. It would only serve to be an annoyance for him. It would also give Bellatrix stronger grounds to break their partnership. He cannot have that.

With the introduction of Lily Evans into their ranks, Rodolphus has larger concerns than the bind of two souls fated to be one.

His tattoos have always been more a dedication to his cause and his beliefs than an attempt at locating the whereabouts of his soulmate. They have no place in his mind – or at least they didn’t until the evening a new marking appeared on his hand. Vines traveling down from his fingers to coil their way around the latest tattoo on his wrist. Audacious.

He took it as a clear message to him. They are searching for him.

Pulling on a pair of black leather gloves, Rodolphus apparates to the base with the intent to receive his next orders as well as retrieve Bellatrix. He could use an assignment tonight. It may help quell the rising irritation. He has no use for a soulmate and he will not allow them to hinder his progress.

He intends for it to be a quick stop. Lingering will not assuage him. Time must not be wasted. Yet the moment he lays eyes on Lily Evans in the lounge, he takes considerable pause as every single muscle in his body tenses and his blood runs cold. His left hand flexes before he slips it into his coat’s pocket.

Her.

She is the one responsible for his newest marking. He now feels the vines sear hotter than the Mark on his forearm ever has. It burns his skin red hot, eating away at it like a disease. She is his predestined soulmate. His hand has curled into a fist within the fold of his jacket. The bubble of irritation has boiled into a heated mixture of anger and disgust.

A Mudblood.

Barely a minute has passed before he regains control of his emotion and silenced any untoward urges. He needs to remain level-headed. He mustn’t forget the seal of protection over her head and the significance of the cause. He cannot be impulsive.

—yet his eyes are fixed to her, seated primly in her loose white dress with all her tattoos out on display for the entire world to see, almost as if she is challenging her soulmate to appear before her. Should he grant her wish then?
]

Miss Evans. [ His voice has dipped to a chilling degree as he stops a few short feet from where she sits. Not too close. He cannot trust what he will do to her if he gets too close. ] Rather bold attire, I must say. What is the occasion?

It wasn't uncommon among purebloods to ignore the nods of their supposed soulmates. Marriages and continuation of the noble bloodlines left little room to consider the needs of the heart. In Slytherin house, while not a pureblood himself, Severus was well aware of this fact. Neither he nor the older Lestrange had acknowledged their bond in all their time at school so far, each presumably for their own reasons. Rodolphus had a line to worry about, and Severus, well he'd chosen his own heart to obsess over in Evans.

Rodolphus had never been interested in a soulmate. A Lestrange was naturally expected to marry for blood purity and it was what he intended. Although he didn’t have a candidate in mind yet, he at least knew it wasn’t going to be Severus Snape. The moment he realized they were bonded by fate; he chose to ignore his very existence. It wouldn’t benefit him to form any connection with him.

His interest was directed more toward the number of eligible young, pureblooded women with strong familial ties. He needed connection and power; not emotional fulfillment.

Fortunately, Snape’s attention was more focused on Lily Evans – an attraction which he found to be wholly repulsive. But if the Mudblood was the solution to their problem, then so be it. Rodolphus only had one more school year left before he was to graduate and then they would have plenty of distance between them. It should be easy enough to evade him.

That being said, they did share the same House which presented its problems. They were in differing Years, but it didn’t mean they couldn’t run into each other in the Dungeon. It was such an occurrence Rodolphus found himself alone with Snape. Everyone had gone to dinner, but he decided to stay behind to complete an assignment. He didn’t expect Snape to show up.

He deigned to give him a sparing glance before he returned to writing. But then almost on second thought, Rodolphus paused and looked back up at him. “If you’re trying to find someone, you would have a better chance in the Great Hall.”
