[It was a mistake, letting her go. Especially since she had moved out of the country to follow her dreams. He respected her for that, even admired it a little for moving so far away from home. But moving again wasn't something that he had wanted to do. Not again, not after all of the times that he had already moved in his lifetime. But, as time went on, he began to miss her terribly. They had dated a little bit before she left for New York, but he couldn't bring himself to go with her. He had been moved too many times in his life.]

[But that didn't mean that he couldn't go and visit, right?]

[Finally having gathered enough money for a visitor's visa and a plane ticket, he finally boarded a plane bound for New York, letting her know ahead of time that he was coming to visit for a few days. He arrived, groggy, first thing in the morning, looking around for his long time friend and once girlfriend.]

They had had a lovely dinner and he had been so kind as to walk her home. She wanted to invite him up, but she was terrified of what might happen. The worst thing was she really really liked him, but she lacked any sort of experience in these matters and she was terrified she'd just embarrass herself.

Katniss glanced up the steps to her small flat and then looked back at him. "Would you want a cup of tea or something?"

[it's been years, at least eight, since he ran away the summer after his mom miscarried, fully of rage at the world and wanting to lash out. He'd been a stupid sixteen year old then, although older in appearance, and had spent a week or two thugging around Metropolis before deciding it wasn't far enough to run. New York was, big enough to swallow up another tough kid, still hurting and determined. Then he'd met Susan. Older by a few years, she'd nevertheless seen something worth saving and taken the time to get past his prickly demeanor. They'd talked a lot of science and math theory, poetry and farming.

She'd been his first real relationship.

She'd also been the one to prod him back to his family, or at least across the Kansas border. Clark had left, angry again that she was pushing him away, although in hindsight he knows it was the right thing to do. In hindsight, he can admit he's never loved anyone else as much. And now he's living in New York, working at the Daily Bugle as part of a transfer program from the Planet, staring at her through a Starbucks window. Susan Storm's a hero now in her own right now, partnered with her brother and friends. Will she even remember the surly teenage biker, or recognize him behind the glasses and quiet manner? He doesn't even realize he's moved until the door swings closed behind him and he's threading his way between tables to hers.]
