[ Everybody knows how it works, the soulmate thing. You see in color when they're around, and when they're not, everything looks black and white. It's a metaphor, lots of books written about it. Dean always figured it was a joke. He teased people about it, especially the ones who bragged about the who and the whens and the long, grandiose stories about first times. They all talk about it like it's life-changing. Some big deal. Dean's been seeing in color since he was four. He's been lying about it just as long, same as hunting monsters.

What does soul mate really mean, anyway? Dean never got the significance to it. Somebody you care about more than anybody else, okay. Somebody you'd die for. A best friend even when you can't stand them. It all made sense when he was a kid, seemed simple.

It kept right on making sense until Sam moved halfway across the country to go to college, and suddenly Dean was nearly biting it on hunts because, turns out, it's not as easy to see when everything's in shades of grey, including the thing you're trying to shoot. But if John could do it, so could Dean. It got easier. A couple years, and Dean all but forgot what living in color felt like.

...Then he picked up Sam at Stanford. It all came roaring back, and Dean realized at 26 for the first time what this whole soulmate crap was all about. It still makes him nauseous sometimes to think about it, which is why he spends a lot of time not thinking about it. At least, he tries not to. But life seems to like throwing it in his face. Like with Jessica, and then Madison, which Sam still won't talk about and which Dean's too afraid of the answer to keep asking. Like right now in Greenwood, Indiana where three people have killed their self-proclaimed soulmates before gouging out their own eyes. ]

People are sick.

[ Dean concludes, yanking loose his tie and popping the top button of his collar before throwing open the Impala door and getting behind the wheel. He and Sam just finished interviewing the latest suspect in the hospital where she's still recovering before she's carted off to jail for the rest of her life, which is less than she deserves, if you ask Dean. Okay sure, there's obviously something supernatural going on, some reason for this twisted pattern of behavior, but that doesn't change that these people are killing someone they're supposed to love and protect. It's disgusting.

The whole eye gouging thing is pretty gross, too. ]
