Being banned from an entire planet has a way of putting things in perspective. [ it's wry, but true. ] I don't know, Jim. Maybe I'm not the right person to be askin'. I ran away from something, not towards. But what I wanted to do, that was never the question. Being a doctor's the only thing that's stayed constant, and I can't imagine I'll ever do anything else except retire. Can't say I love the location, but... the patients aren't so bad.

[ a starship's medical needs are demanding, usually immediate, and often unknown to modern science. it's not the thrill that affects him, so much as knowing the crew's lives are his responsibility. it's terrifying, but it's the kind of investment he'd never find as a surgeon on earth. he left behind the idea of having a family back on earth; he never thought he'd find one in his medbay. ]
