You're having my baby.

the "WE'RE HAVING A BABY" meme

Nature is no respecter of persons, my friends. Whether it be childhood friends, newlyweds, or one-night stands, a single decision or accident can change everything, and there will be three people instead of just two.

Congratulations! The characters in these threads and those who reply to them are now expecting babies, no matter what their unique situation may be. Of course, depending on the characters, this might go over like a lead balloon. But wait! Even if the decision to have a baby was made and was consensual, the process is no walk in the park. There is lots to do...and only nine months to do it. Nine potentially drama-filled months.

HOW TO PLAY
  • Comment with your character, preferences, etc.
  • Not all options here are fluffy and happy. Some are potentially angsty or possibly triggering. Tread lightly. Be sure to mention what you want and what you don't want.
  • Reply to others.
  • For this, male characters can get pregnant because why not.

PROMPTS

  • How'd It Happen: What led up to this event? How are you in this situation?

  • Realization: There's a wrench in the works...or maybe it was expected, but you're just realizing you're pregnant.

  • Positive Reaction: Yes, after all this time and planning! You're finally ready for a family.

  • Negative Reaction: Oh, no. This is terrible. You're in no position to take care of a child!

  • Freak Outs: But...how? You're a human, she's an alien, how -

  • Deciding What to Do: If this wasn't planned, there needs to be a plan of action now.

  • Keep it Secret: You're attempting to keep your pregnancy a secret from your partner. This is only a bandaid for the bigger problem.

  • Telling Others: The other people in you two's life have to know at some point.

  • Drama: No one wanted you to have a kid and the anger is palpable.

  • Morning Sickness and More: Everything hurts and the mornings are hell.

  • Learning: If you're in a technologically advanced society, you may get to see an ultrasound. Otherwise, there are folk remedies that can be tried.

  • Manipulation: One of you is using the prospect of a child to bend the other to their will and make them stay.

  • My Body is a Cage: The person carrying the baby is having a decent amount of discomfort, mentally and physically.

  • Showing: It's a secret no longer with an expanding stomach.

  • Support: The partner who isn't carrying the child should do their best to be there and help out...

  • Overprotective: ...but to a degree. Don't act like the partner carrying the child is made of paper.

  • Getting Ready: The house or apartment or castle has to be babyproof.

  • Heart to Heart: It's time to talk about the big changes before the happen. Where do the two of you stand?

  • It's Happening: THE BABY IS COMING.

  • Rough Going: Childbirth is still a dangerous affair and there's no smooth sailing for you. So pace if you're lucky, scream in the bed if you're not.

  • Bad End: Not all new beginnings last. Sometimes, they become unhappy endings.

  • Coming Home: Finally, parents and baby get to settle down.

  • Getting Used to This: Well, maybe settle down. There's still crying in the night, feedings to do, diapers to change...

There was no room for delay. He wanted to be in the med bay as soon as possible given her awkward steps. Onlookers were... well they knew better than to stare but they all were catches glances. When she took his arm he thought something was happening, a contraction perhaps. He ducked her into the doorway of an adjacent room.

Her request was so simple, so human. He could offer her statistics and logic that she wouldn't appreciate or he could let some emotion come over him. He was anticipating this as well, looking forward to the end, when Nyota could recover and they could be with their baby. He could form a telepathic bond with her and watch over her while her mother rested.

Spock took her face in his hands. "These are our last moments as merely two, Nyota. Very soon this will be a memory, we will have Amanda. We will have many things ahead of us. I have every confidence you will do admirably." he paused a moment, if he was ever going to give her an emotional moment, this was the time to do it. "You have carried our child with grace and strength, I know you will deliver her in the same manner. All will be well, Nyota." he leaned in and kissed her brow, then nuzzled her, forehead to forehead.

"I am grateful for this moment." he slides both of his hands over her belly for the last time. It's like he's saying goodbye, even though it will be a hello in just a few hours.

Even now, he continued to surprise her. In such a high risk situation, most men would have repeated what she wanted to hear word by word. Spock put her at ease by telling her this would be their last few moments as just Spock and Nyota. Soon, what was once two would become three. Any other terran woman would have bulked or cursed him, but Uhura knew what he meant. She also knew this was a deeply emotional moment.

She felt her eyes well up when he told her 'all would be well' in that logical tone of voice that made him so damn hard to argue with. She had asked him to tell her everything would be okay and he had told her as much. Even if the risks were still there, it gave Nyota the strength she needed to walk into the Med Bay. Where McCoy already have a very private bed and room prepared for her.

One of the nurses took her aside to help her change into a dignity stealing paper gown. During the process, the same nurse ran out of the room to inform the doctor that Uhura's water had broke. As slow as their daughter had been in getting to this point of delivery, she was on the fast track to being delivered in record speed. There was no time for any pain medication and since the baby's heart beat was regular, no hint of a C section just yet.

Uhura focused on Spock, gripping his hand when the nurse finally wheeled her out on a med table. McCoy averted his eyes, giving them a moment. It was a lot to take in, he knew.

Spock didn't think she lacked dignity. If anything she had so much right now, such prowess and control, such power. She was going to give life today and he was in awe. He felt useless by her side, only capable of holding her hand and helping to relieve her pain telepathically through their touch. Anything he could do to help her.

Spock reached across Nyota, taking her other hand.

"Hold onto me if you need to grip through the pain. I will breathe with you if you wish." or he'll count, or he'll.... he'll do anything. Chapel brought some water and ice chips. Spock would offer Nyota those as the labor progressed. It wasn't common for him to offer the chance to touch him for hours in public. But this was special, Nyota needed him, Amanda needed Nyota to be strong.

Speaking of Amanda. She's beginning to move. Contraction time? Ready, Nyota? Your daughter sure is.

Nyota didn't like being here in the medbay, with McCoy hovering over her and Nurse Chapel at arm's length. She was a deeply private person, but even she recognized that she needed help to give birth to her daughter. Hybrid births increased the odds of something potentially dangerous happening. This certainly wasn't something they could accomplish on their quarters, although she would have preferred to be alone with Spock. To put it in his words, it simply wasn't logical.

She held onto him, gripping his hand like it was her very last life line during each contraction. Afterwards, remembering how sensitive his fingertips were, she apologized for any pain she might have caused him, which McCoy found entirely amusing. He was oddly silent, as if sensing this was a deeply personal moment.

She took deep breaths, panting through contraction after contraction and still no progress. Their bond helped take the edge off her pain, but just barely. She felt like she was in agony with each contraction, leaning against Spock afterwards, panting to collect her breath.

"It won't be long now." McCoy said after a brief check up. He made sure any touch he gave to Uhura was brief and as clinical as possible, but there was no avoiding the very obvious fact that he had to do his job.

Chapel pressed a cool cloth to her forehead, wiping away traces of sweat that dotted her brow. Nyota was strangely quiet, focused on the demands of her body and the process of labor. She kept her grip on his hand, but the next contraction was powerful enough to bring tears to her eyes, momentarily blurring her vision. "Spock..." There might have been a few curses here and there. Not all of them in terran language.

Spock assured here there was no need for an apology. She was free to grip him as she needed, he was strong. She wasn't going to break him or his fingers. He might feel her tense hands more than a human but it was his right and his duty to help her through this.

When Nyota got quiet he believed they were close. She would be done with this soon and he would see his child's face. But the contraction came and went, the monitor on their baby didn't alert anything new, but McCoy made a face.

Nyota swore and even shed tears. But nothing was happening. She was contracting but...

"Is there is a problem, doctor?"

"She's not moving."

"You are referring to the fetus."

"Yeah. That contraction should have pushed her into the birth canal, we should be moving to the home stretch. She's not moving." McCoy looked at the baby monitor and sighed. "Give it another couple contractions, I want to see for sure but we may have to consider that her two extra weeks made her too big, Uhura. I may have to perform an emergency C-Section if she's stuck."

Spock took the news plain-faced. He nodded in understanding but his hand was holding Nyota's, offering feelings of comfort and confidence.

Nyota listened to the banter happening around her. Spock and McCoy. Nurse Chapel responding by touching her forehead with a cold and wet cloth. She had expressed her own opinion when it came to C-sections and it certainly wasn't in favor of the surgery. Unless in emergency situations. The baby's heart rate and pulse hadn't dropped.

"No." She said firmly, eyes already shut tight from the effort it took just to breathe as the next contraction came on immediately and just as strong as the first. This time, progress was made. The baby's head was born, causing McCoy to stir into action, coaxing her to push gently for the next couple of contractions until the shoulders were born.

From there it was easy for her to push the child out with one last push and the very last of her strength. Little Amanda was born into the world.

Exhausted as she was, she smiled at the sound of her daughter crying, the sound of a very healthy little girl.

"Let me hold her..."
