the death meme

the death meme

(CONTENT WARNING. This is a meme about death and may deal with suicide, depression, extreme violence, illnesses, etc.)

This is it. The final curtain. You're at the end of your life, and there's someone here you really, really need to say something to before you die.

CAUSE OF DEATH

1 - Accidental. Nobody meant for this to happen, but it doesn't matter now. Due to negligence, arrogance or just plain bad luck, you've become gravely ill or injured and are now in your last moments. This covers all kinds of accidental deaths--strangulation, drowning, car accidents, unintentional beheadings, whatever you can think of.

2 - Murder. Somebody really didn't like you. Enough to kill you, it seems. You're now dead by someone else's hand. (Maybe even the person replying to you?) As with accidental death, this covers all types of intentional, malicious murder, regardless of method--so poisoning, stabbing, shooting, etc., all work here. Same with all the below options: any possible variation you can think of on it will work!

3 - Suicide. There is no hope for you, and no way out. You've reached the absolute bottom pits of despair, and the only recourse you have is to take your own life. Someone shows up to stop you... but they're too late to help you now.

4 - Terminal illness. You have cancer, or tuberculosis, or cholera back when people got cholera. The doctors have done everything they could and it wasn't enough. The only thing to do now is give your loved ones the bad news.

5 - Starvation. So thirsty. So hungry. Maybe you've been traveling in the desert for hours, or maybe you're just really poor. Whatever the reason, it doesn't matter, because you're slowly wasting away until you're nothing but skin and bones.

6 - Death in battle. You've died a hero's death, and gone out in a blaze of glory. Or maybe you were a coward who got shot for deserting? Either way, you're now a casualty of war. Will you be honored with a parade or scorned as a traitor to your country?

7 - Natural causes. You've lived a long, happy life, and now your story is at an end. In a warm bed, surrounded by your family and friends, you peacefully drift off. Just make sure that you've made a will somewhere, or at least use your deathbed to set the record straight. Otherwise, who knows what kind of squabbles might errupt after you leave this world?

TIME LEFT

1 - A few minutes. You're fading fast and you don't have much, well, any time left. Better tell the person with you that you love -- or despise -- them with your last breath, because you'll never have the chance otherwise.

2 - A few hours. You haven't got much time left. Is there someone you still need to kill? To kiss? Better do it quick. (Note: last kisses not recommended for people dying of highly contagious illnesses.)

3 - A few days. The doctors have given you the news, and it's not very good. You've only got a couple days left to live. You should start trying to make peace with people and saying your final goodbyes with the days you have left.

4 - A few weeks. Take that vacation you've always wanted to go on but never had the chance to. Go do that thing you've never thought you'd be any good at. You've got only weeks left to live. Don't waste them.

5 - A few months. While you aren't quite on death's doorstep yet, your lifespan has still dwindled considerably from what you probably thought it would be. How are you going to spend your last few months on Earth? Making the world a better place and telling your family you love them? Or raising as much hell as possible?

RELATIONSHIP

1 - Lovers. This is your husband, wife, boyfriend, girlfriend, mistress, whatever you call them they were the person you wanted to spend your life with. Too bad you don't have much of a life to spend with them anymore.

2 - Siblings. Your beloved little or older sibling is just standing there, watching you slowly waste away before their eyes. Can you say anything to comfort them? Note that it doesn't necessarily have to be interpreted literally; adopted siblings and friends so close they might as well be siblings work too.

3 - Parent and child. Nothing is worse than a parent having to bury their child... except, maybe, a young child now alone in the world after losing their parent. As with the sibling prompt, this can be expanded to include parental figures and people who are LIKE a father/mother to you as well as actual biological parents.

4 - Co-workers, teammates or classmates. You were fighting for the same side. Or you worked together in the same office for years. Or they sat behind you in biology all semester. However you met, how do your react when you find out someone who used to be a fixture in your life is going to die?

5 - Friends. You're the best of friends! You go everywhere together, know all each other's secrets, and are never seen apart. At least, you didn't use to be. Now one of you is dying and the other one is left alone in the world. Or maybe you're dying together. Wait, is that better or worse?

6 - Bitter enemies. You hate, hate, HATE this person. In fact, maybe you killed them. Or they killed you. Or maybe nobody killed anybody and they're just bitter that Mother Nature got to you before they did. Regardless, they want to confront you one last time before you bite it, if only to rub your nose in your imminent demise and their ability to outlive you.

HOW IT WORKS:
1. Post your character and preference
2. Respond to others.
3. Tell the person what you need to tell them before you bite it.
4. Have fun!

[He's never witnessed his father like this, never had to deal with the pain of losing him as he had Gohan and his mother. To have his father in his life, even if from another timeline, it was something he had always wanted and to now have it stripped from him.

He choked on his words, fingers clutching tightly at Vegeta's back.]

No... you can't.

[His words came out shakily, that familiar feeling of being helpless to those he loved drowning him to the point of feeling as if he were going to pass out. Because all he had known was death in his life and for it to always come back on him, it was too much right now, this wasn't fair, this life of his wasn't fair.]

They need you. [His mother, the younger version of himself.] I need you.

[Vegeta almost laughs, except that just makes him cough up more blood and shudder from the pain. Still, his grip doesn't loosen.]

You've never needed me. [Should he be smiling on his death bed? He can't help it, he is.] You grew into a fine man without me. You'll keep on.... You've always been stronger than me.

[You. The younger you. In the ways that really count, his sons are so much better than him.]

[Trunks gives a desperate glance up to Goku who's busy fighting Black, the anger that he feels towards the tyrant slowly bubbling within him as he holds tighter to his father.

It's only the cough of blood and words that follow that cause him that anger to recede for the moment and for that ache in his chest to overtake any other emotions that might be threatening to spill loose.]

Dad!

[Vegeta's words... they're words that leave him staring in shock, never thinking they would be something he would hear from his father of all people. It's how he knows this is bad, this is different, and he can't help the tears that fall from his eyes.]

I won't let you die! I won't, dad!

[And he wraps his arms around his father at that, tightly, burying his face into the neck of the man he had given everything up for, the man he had wanted to meet for years and make proud, the man that was and always would be his only father.]

Shut up! [Some words you might expect to hear from Vegeta, for comfort. He tries to snap and keep his usual anger, but his strength is fading fast and he can't quite manage it.] It's beyond your control! Listen to me!

[There are suddenly so many things he needs to tell Trunks. Both of them. But he failed this one in so many ways; by dying when he was an infant, leaving him to grow up alone, making him fight battles Vegeta should have dealt with before he could even walk, mistreating him when he went to the past to save him.]

... I'm proud of you. I need you to know that. [Vegeta's grip on his son's back falters for a moment before it resumes even tighter than before. His breathing is getting heavy, but Vegeta is too stubborn to give in even to death.] ... Made everything worth it. Both of you. Bulma too.

[Worth losing his planet, surviving years serving Frieza, having his pride and body beaten down time and time again. Worth it to know it lead to meeting Bulma and Trunks existing.]

[That falter of fingers against his back causes Trunks' heart to stop for a moment before he feels his father's grip again and he tightens his own hold on the Saiyan Prince.

The sounds of Goku and Black battling it out against each other above are loud to the point of deafening and yet, all Trunks can hear is the heartbeat of his father against his chest while his ki continues to slip away from him; he knows he's losing him.]

I'll find a way, dad. I won't give up on you.

[Words that echo his father's own advice to him when all seemed lost with the destruction of his time machine, fingers clutched at Vegeta's back as he shook against his father, not ready to say good bye to him.]

I won't give up, I promise. I promise, dad.

I know you won't. [Trunks will keep fighting. He won't just stop and be consumed by grief. But Vegeta knows he is dying, and this time there's no wishing him back. And Trunks is still reeling from the loss of his mother and so many others.] ... But sometimes you do have to let go, son. You can start over. It doesn't feel like it now but... you'll be happy.

[That's how it was for him. It took years, but as they've already established: Trunks is better than him. Vegeta slumps further, head resting on Trunks' shoulder while all his strength goes towards maintaining consciousness for just a little while longer and not letting go with that one hand.]

... I've never held you before, have I? Not in this timeline. [If he knows himself at all, that is.] Not even when you were a baby.

[He's a survivor by nature, something he's always done and taught to be since birth. But this? This isn't how he wants to survive. Not without Gohan, not without his mother, not without his father. It never ends and it seems that one by one, the people in his life keep disappearing from him, leaving him behind to continue to survive.

The thought breaks him for a moment and the fingers that clutch at Vegeta's back instead hold tight in an embrace, knowing this moment will slip away from him within a matter of moments along with his father.

But through the tears as he lifts his head from the crook of Vegeta's neck, he manages to smile a little, tears sliding down his cheeks.]

I'll never let you go, father. Because I'm your son. [And regardless of timelines, you will always be a part of him.]

[Vegeta supposes that will just have to do. He's done what he can, Trunks will bounce back with time. And he doesn't want to be forgotten.]

My son...

[There was a time when he never thought he'd say those words. Never thought he'd have a family again, or anyone he cared about more than his own life. If the thought ever occurred to him, it sounded impossible. Vegeta smiles.]

My... son...

[This is actually a rather peaceful way to die, Vegeta thinks. Holding on to his son, telling him how important he is to him. Let others worry about fighting for a change, Vegeta just wants to focus on his family. It would be nice to see Bulma and the younger Trunks one last time, but maybe this is for the best.

The hand on Trunks' back keeps a tight grip, even as the rest of the tension in Vegeta's body leaves. He doesn't want to let go either. But, as the last breath leaves his body, he finally does and the Saiyan Prince's hand falls to the ground with a quiet thud.]
