the death meme

the death meme

(CONTENT WARNING. This is a meme about death and may deal with suicide, depression, extreme violence, illnesses, etc.)

This is it. The final curtain. You're at the end of your life, and there's someone here you really, really need to say something to before you die.

CAUSE OF DEATH

1 - Accidental. Nobody meant for this to happen, but it doesn't matter now. Due to negligence, arrogance or just plain bad luck, you've become gravely ill or injured and are now in your last moments. This covers all kinds of accidental deaths--strangulation, drowning, car accidents, unintentional beheadings, whatever you can think of.

2 - Murder. Somebody really didn't like you. Enough to kill you, it seems. You're now dead by someone else's hand. (Maybe even the person replying to you?) As with accidental death, this covers all types of intentional, malicious murder, regardless of method--so poisoning, stabbing, shooting, etc., all work here. Same with all the below options: any possible variation you can think of on it will work!

3 - Suicide. There is no hope for you, and no way out. You've reached the absolute bottom pits of despair, and the only recourse you have is to take your own life. Someone shows up to stop you... but they're too late to help you now.

4 - Terminal illness. You have cancer, or tuberculosis, or cholera back when people got cholera. The doctors have done everything they could and it wasn't enough. The only thing to do now is give your loved ones the bad news.

5 - Starvation. So thirsty. So hungry. Maybe you've been traveling in the desert for hours, or maybe you're just really poor. Whatever the reason, it doesn't matter, because you're slowly wasting away until you're nothing but skin and bones.

6 - Death in battle. You've died a hero's death, and gone out in a blaze of glory. Or maybe you were a coward who got shot for deserting? Either way, you're now a casualty of war. Will you be honored with a parade or scorned as a traitor to your country?

7 - Natural causes. You've lived a long, happy life, and now your story is at an end. In a warm bed, surrounded by your family and friends, you peacefully drift off. Just make sure that you've made a will somewhere, or at least use your deathbed to set the record straight. Otherwise, who knows what kind of squabbles might errupt after you leave this world?

TIME LEFT

1 - A few minutes. You're fading fast and you don't have much, well, any time left. Better tell the person with you that you love -- or despise -- them with your last breath, because you'll never have the chance otherwise.

2 - A few hours. You haven't got much time left. Is there someone you still need to kill? To kiss? Better do it quick. (Note: last kisses not recommended for people dying of highly contagious illnesses.)

3 - A few days. The doctors have given you the news, and it's not very good. You've only got a couple days left to live. You should start trying to make peace with people and saying your final goodbyes with the days you have left.

4 - A few weeks. Take that vacation you've always wanted to go on but never had the chance to. Go do that thing you've never thought you'd be any good at. You've got only weeks left to live. Don't waste them.

5 - A few months. While you aren't quite on death's doorstep yet, your lifespan has still dwindled considerably from what you probably thought it would be. How are you going to spend your last few months on Earth? Making the world a better place and telling your family you love them? Or raising as much hell as possible?

RELATIONSHIP

1 - Lovers. This is your husband, wife, boyfriend, girlfriend, mistress, whatever you call them they were the person you wanted to spend your life with. Too bad you don't have much of a life to spend with them anymore.

2 - Siblings. Your beloved little or older sibling is just standing there, watching you slowly waste away before their eyes. Can you say anything to comfort them? Note that it doesn't necessarily have to be interpreted literally; adopted siblings and friends so close they might as well be siblings work too.

3 - Parent and child. Nothing is worse than a parent having to bury their child... except, maybe, a young child now alone in the world after losing their parent. As with the sibling prompt, this can be expanded to include parental figures and people who are LIKE a father/mother to you as well as actual biological parents.

4 - Co-workers, teammates or classmates. You were fighting for the same side. Or you worked together in the same office for years. Or they sat behind you in biology all semester. However you met, how do your react when you find out someone who used to be a fixture in your life is going to die?

5 - Friends. You're the best of friends! You go everywhere together, know all each other's secrets, and are never seen apart. At least, you didn't use to be. Now one of you is dying and the other one is left alone in the world. Or maybe you're dying together. Wait, is that better or worse?

6 - Bitter enemies. You hate, hate, HATE this person. In fact, maybe you killed them. Or they killed you. Or maybe nobody killed anybody and they're just bitter that Mother Nature got to you before they did. Regardless, they want to confront you one last time before you bite it, if only to rub your nose in your imminent demise and their ability to outlive you.

HOW IT WORKS:
1. Post your character and preference
2. Respond to others.
3. Tell the person what you need to tell them before you bite it.
4. Have fun!

It had been a number of years since the fighting ended. Since the aliens and having to prove that Numbered had a right to exist and every other messy awful thing Jasmine and the people in her life had been through. Jasmine herself felt like she'd finally made peace with everything, thanks in no small part to her and Marina finally settling down. It honestly felt like they might never get there...

So of course, something had to happen to mess everything up.

It wasn't something she had expected, honestly. Dark Precure had gone before her time, so she'd never had the chance to find out her time was limited. All that stuff about clones having short lives in movies and stuff? Jasmine had started to suspect that was the case when her body felt like it was failing her, when it started to hurt to move, and then again later when she'd dropped out of the sky. Of course, she ended up having to check an expert before she knew for sure, but it was clear - Jasmine's time was fading. She had only a few months left.

She'd told everybody of course. Well, more like mumbled it, and then asked to be alone. It was just so heavy to think about. Like a horrible, opressive weight had been put on her shoulders. But she also couldn't ignore it.

Eventually, she ended up sitting outside her and Marina's home, staring at the sunset. She felt numb. There was a lot she had to come to terms with, and say to people, but right now, she just... couldn't proccess anything.

"... Marina," she called out, finally, to the house. "You... you wanna come out here with me?"

Marina had been the first to notice Jasmine slowing down - almost as soon as Jasmine herself had. They'd all been through so much pain and so many battles that she could almost pass it off as the wear and tear of combat and getting a little older. Perhaps she was past her prime, because god knows Marina felt like she was in the same boat some days, but it began to get worse, fast, far too fast.

Finding out the truth had almost been enough to truly break Marina. After all they'd been through they deserved to grow old together, and yet the truth was that shed would only have Jasmine for a few months, that she'd have to grow old, live most of her life, without her.

'Hollow' was the only word to describe how she felt. There were days when she made the most of what time they had, planning to do what they could together even as Jasmine's body began to fall apart on her, but some days, some nights, times when she wasn't with Jasmine... she could hardly even feel any emotion sometimes.

And worrying about her own reaction managed to make her feel selfish, when she should be turning all that into supporting Jasmine, who had to feel a thousand times worse. Right?

In the midst of chores, Marina's stomach turned at how Jasmine addressed her, even if she knew her wife had some time left. Every change set her worrying if this was the moment she'd lose her. Despite that, she put on a halfway decent smile as she stepped out to join Jasmine. "What's up?"

Jasmine looked up at her, smiling, though she looked a bit sad still as she did so. She looked a lot wearier as well, with her shoulders slumped and her just... appearing incredibly tired.

"Nothing much," she said, trying to sound confident. "It's just looking like it'll be a nice sunset, and I wanted you to sit here with me..."

As strong as Jasmine had been the entire time Marina had known her - physically in particular - seeing her so worn out just from sitting around had her on edge. Worry, it turned out, was exhausting.

Still, her stomach unwound a little from the knots it was in, and she plopped down next to Jasmine with a sigh, immediately scooting herself right up against her. "There are a lot of nice sunsets here," she added quietly, leaning her head on Jasmine.

"There really are," Jasmine said, as Marina leaned her head against her's. Her body was a bit less solid and strong than before, but she could at least sit firmly as Marina leaned against her.

Sunsets. They were representative of the end of things, weren't they? And now Jasmine was in her's. Dammit. She couldn't go very long without thinking about this, could she? Instead, she tried to focus on how beautiful the sky was.

"It'd be really nice to go flying for a while right now, on a night like this. You know, it's funny. I used to hate having the thing that helped me do it..."

Eventually she might not be strong enough for Marina to rest against even this lightly, in the last few weeks... and every sign of Jasmine's failing strength would be another hurdle.

The twilight of the day, the twilight of Jasmine's life. It was too easy to focus on, and Marina could really help the thought either, biting her lip briefly.

"Nn. I always thought it was beautiful," Marina said quietly, reaching around behind Jasmine, lightly brushing her fingers across the top, "being a part of you and all."

[It wasn't really a surprise when it was a battle that brought them all back together. When Steve had arrived with Sam, Wanda, Natasha, Clint and Scott, the air had been thick with tension. There was the possibility that they were walking into a trap, but Steve knew that Tony wouldn't have used the phone he'd left him unless he had any other choice. The six months of absolute silence had proved that much. Rhodey was back in the War Machine suit, Vision was hovering protectively nearby and the kid that Tony had brought to the airport fight was crouched and ready to go.

Tony had explained the situation fast enough, looking at everyone but Steve as he did so. Steve had felt a heavy stab of guilt, but tried to keep his expression as neutral as possible while he listened to Tony outline the plan. It was a good plan, even if it was strange letting Tony take the lead. Considering the circumstances, though Steve wasn't going to step in and take control. They were fighting aliens, much smarter and sophisticated than the ones they'd battled before. Tony gave them a run down of their weaknesses, of which there were too few, and then everyone sprung to action. Tony called out Steve's name and Steve caught the shield that had been tossed his way on pure instinct. He looked up, unable to hide his surprise, but Tony was already gone.

They fought for what felt like hours, working together to take them down. When the dust settled, Steve was exhausted and bloody from the fight. The comms had been taken out by an EMP wave, though Steve had been relieved to find it hadn't had any real effect on Tony and Rhodey's armors. The team was spread out, but close enough where he could still hear a giant Scott coordinating them where he could. The city around them was a wreck and Steve felt that settle on his shoulders as he made his way towards the others. His eye caught a glint of metal in the ruins of a building and he suddenly realized with a sinking feeling that it was the Iron Man armor. He ran towards the rubble, skidding to a stop beside it and dropping his shield in order to begin pulling pieces of concrete off the armor.]

"Shit," Frank breathes.

Turns out the silly red suit doesn't really hold up very well to armor-piercing rounds, which is what the shitbags they encountered today had been loaded up on. They're dead, now, Frank made sure of that before circling back when he realized that the devil wasn't hot on his heels being a pain in the ass anymore.

And, well.

Frank is no medic. He has done his share of mid-combat patch jobs, though, and he knows a lost cause when he sees one. (He's listened to his share of last words, too.) He swallows and drops down to his knees next to Matt, pressing the heel of his palm to the big, bubbling wound he's got where the bullet went in even though he's pretty sure that at this point it's useless. Everything is slippery-wet, and there's already an alarmingly large puddle of blood beneath him.

"Hey," he says quietly, probably more soothingly than he's ever said anything to the other vigilante, "hey. You still with me, Red?"

[ Asking for help rather than flat out saying I told you so had been hard, initially, but Tony knew that they were outnumbered. Despite the bitter taste in his mouth that he still had about the whole thing that had happened with the Accords and then Bucky, he knew they had to work together if they wanted a shot at winning this battle, but really, the petty side of him still wanted to yell out that he had told them. Aliens really were who they had to prepare for. The biggest threat would come from outside of this world - literally. He wasn't just the boy crying wolf, and now here they were.

It felt like a hollow victory at being right, though. Some part of him had to admit that this felt good, for all of them to be fighting together again, but he would rather be wrong at this point. The aliens had no qualms about destruction, or who they mowed over in an effort to win. Tony's memory of seeing the team dead in front of him was all too present during the fight, and every close call made him nervous even if he kept his head in the game as much as he could, but he also used that as a drive to fight harder. The team had been broken, but he still didn't want to see them fall. Not any of them, not even Steve.

Especially not Steve. Their friendship had soured after the Accords, after Siberia, but Tony wasn't vengeful enough to wish that illusion come true.

If anything, he was glad when they managed to fight against all odds and got the fight to go their way. It hadn't been easy, this had easily been the hardest fight they ever had to deal with, but they had managed. They had won.

Or, so he thought. When he had figured they had dealt with the enemy completely, he had been taken by surprise by one. Tony had been distracted after helping a man and his child escape from where they had been hiding in the lobby of a building when he had been attacked. He fought back, of course, trying to get rid of the damn thing. And he had even managed to do so, but after dealing out the killing shot, he went flying back into one of the collapsing buildings. The world went blank for what felt like just a blink, but suddenly Steve's voice manages to come through from the distorted garble in his helmet as FRIDAY tries to reboot the system, but it's not working. The suit isn't coming back online, but Tony already knows that even if it did, he wouldn't be able to push his way out of this one. A metal rod had managed to pierce through the suit, from both the impact and the weight of the debris that had fallen on him, and he can feel the pressure of it from the entry point in the spot on his back. FRIDAY isn't there to tell him how he's bleeding out, or how his vitals are dropping, but he really doesn't need to hear it.

He knows. He knows, even before Steve manages to rip the faceplate off the suit once he has cleared enough of the debris to get to him. Tony takes a breath as fresh air finally reaches his lungs, but he immediately regrets it as the pain hits him so strongly that he has to bite the inside of his cheek to keep himself from screaming. ]

Did--... We won?

[ His voice is nothing more than a shaky, pained whisper but he has to ask. All this is reminding him of the first alien invasion they had to deal with, how Steve had been there, too, and he forces himself to forget the other memory. Of Steve kneeling over him in Siberia, but right now that doesn't matter. He had come through. They had fought together, and Tony's lips tug into a small smile even if it looks more like a grimace. ] Turns out you were right. We really are stronger together.
