Yeah, what have I got to lose then?

[A sigh, there's some frustration in his tone now. He really can't figure her out. But there were signs she still liked him, enough for him to cling to the hope that maybe they could be together.] I didn't kill you, I could have... could've hurt you, too, and forced you to tell me everything. And I'm letting you stay here, this is nicer than one of those cells. What else do you want? If I let you go, you'll bring SHIELD back down on me.

[He lowered his voice, looking down.] And then I'd miss you again.

[She took a step or two towards him.] Then come back with me, Steve. You don't have to prove anything by doing this; you've already proven yourself to me, and isn't my opinion enough?

[She was close enough to him that she could feel the heat radiating from his body. Reaching up, her hand gently caressed his cheek.]

[He leaned into her touch, his eyes never leaving hers. Slowly, gently, his arms moved around her waist.]

I have? [He looked at her with disbelieving eyes; she didn't really mean that, did she? Had he really proven himself to her?] You're not just saying that?

[She dropped her hand from his face.] You don't believe me?

I dunno, I... I want to. But before you said-- [He stopped, looking away.] If you think that, why don't you stay with me? If I go back-- even if I wanted to, you know what'll happen. I worked so hard to get here.

And I've worked so hard to get here as well. I have a responsibility to my country and I can't turn my back to that. No matter how intense my feelings for you are.

Peggy let out a heavy sigh, gaze turning to the mountains.]

[Well, he thought, they seemed to be at an impasse. But hearing her admit such things about her feelings for him, that was something else. He brought a hand up to her face, his other hand tossing the sketchbook he still held back to the table.] Then can we just forget about all that for now?

[Brow raised, Peggy faintly smiled.] You're asking me to forget a lot of things, Steve.

I'd have to forget, too, you know. Forget that we're enemies now. But I'll do it, if all that stuff you said before, about how you feel, if it's really true.

[He brought his hand down, tiling her head up a little, leaning down so his face was close to hers.] Peggy, you're so.... [He whispered before he pressed his lips to hers in a soft kiss, a part of him expecting that she'd back away, and the rest hoping she wouldn't.]

[She didn't pull away, but she didn't kiss back. If she did, she probably wouldn't stop and that wouldn't be good. To act on her impulses would only bring her doom.

Peggy vented out her frustration with a sigh.]

[His heart sinks when she doesn't return the kiss, much as he enjoys the taste of her lips, it really isn't as half as good as would be if she wanted it, too, if she just acted on it.

He turned his back on her, going to the table and laying both his hands on it before he picked up the sketchbook he'd dropped and held it out to her.] Here. Keep it.

Maybe I should just let you go. If I asked anybody else what to do, they'd say I should just kill you. Would be a lot easier if I didn't love you.
