[Still, this trip to Sussex sounds as if it'll do the trick. And this time they can take Tesla with them.

Yes, their humor was always part of their relationship when they were friends, and John thought it was an important part of what kept them in each others company.]

All right, all right. We'll go out to the countryside and you can be as lazy as you like for a week.

[Sherlock leans in for another kiss, then finally takes a seat opposite him at the table. Tesla's tail is thumping gently against John's feet--he may be having a lazy day himself, but he's happy.]

Good. I hope you'll rest a little too, while we're there.

[Though Sherlock's mind was always so active, it was hard to get him to sit still for long.]

Doctor's orders?

[He chuckles, then falls silent as he takes a thoughtful sip of his tea.]

...you know. It'll be ten years exactly, tomorrow.

[John reaches for a biscuit and dips it into his tea.]

Is it?

[He sounds surprised, but it's very unlikely John had forgotten it was their anniversary.]

[He fidgets with his ring, twisting it gently on his finger.]

I still do.

[John looks up and then smiles warmly after a moment. He reaches across the table to take Sherlock's hand gently and brushes his thumb over the top of the ring on Sherlock's finger. It's that same ring he brought back from Afghanistan. John thought it needed a good polish, but he could never convince Sherlock to remove it.]

Me too.

[Sherlock turns his hand just enough to twine their fingers together. His expression softens, very slightly--for a moment he's just a man openly, genuinely in love.]

Molly thinks she's planning a surprise party for next week. You've probably already noticed. But if there's anything else you actually want to do...

[He'd forgotten, though he had noticed the hints. Molly didn't always know how to keep a secret, though she could when it was important enough.]

No, that's fine.

[John didn't have the heart to say he'd rather have Sherlock to himself.]

We're lucky to have such good friends.

[He looks up, still sincere and possibly a little self-conscious.]

I'd like to do something. Which... I usually don't. For anyone.

[Even after ten years, some things are still difficult to say.]

[John is a bit surprised but nods.]

Sure. Anything you want.

[Whatever it is, after ten years, he'll certainly agree.]

We can start with Sussex.

[Sherlock reaches across the table to brush his thumb across John's cheek.]

But sometimes it doesn't seem like enough.

[He knit his brow.]

Enough what?

Enough for... all this.

[Generally he hated talking about feelings--but this was John, and sometimes he felt like he couldn't say the things that mattered enough. Especially not since those terrible six months when John had been in Afghanistan and he'd been constantly miserable and bored and terrified of losing the only person he'd ever considered a partner.]

I'm never bored. I've done better work in the last ten years than I did my entire life.

[He let out a helpless chuckle.]

I haven't even wanted a smoke in years.

That's because if you took a smoke I'd let you have it.

[Just a joke, though John certainly wouldn't approve. He squeezed Sherlock's hand.]

You don't have to do anything grand, Sherlock. The point is we're together.

[He was quiet for a moment, running through the options of what he could say. And eventually he came to the conclusion that there was only one phrase that was anything near adequate.]

[He smiled.]

I know.

Let's go to Sussex. Tomorrow.

[Now he really was eager to get away, and it was their anniversary. Sherlock could easily call Mycroft and get them that place to stay at.

John looked under the table.]

Do you want to go to Sussex, Tesla?

[The dog wagged his tail and barked, picking up on the excited tone.]

You do? You better pack. Go get your ball!

[Ball? Tesla knew that one! He went to fetch his ball.]

[Sherlock let out a startled laugh as the dog scrambled up from under the table, out of the kitchen--and then he set his tea aside, moving to stand without letting go of his lover's hand.]

He never seems to understand that when I say it.

[Not that he was complaining. Much. He had, after all, taught Tesla to bark ferociously upon hearing the word "Edison"... and the dog did seem to understand that "piss off" meant to get down off the bed when they were about to use it.]

[John looked up and smiled at Sherlock.]

You tease him too much.

[Tesla knows John will play ball properly. The dog comes racing back with ball in mouth and wags his tail furiously.]

He's a dog. They're socialized through play.

[His tone is mock-innocent, but his grin is wicked.]

I'll go call Mycroft. You... wear this mutt out.

[He punctuates the sentence by bending down and giving Tesla a brief rub between the ears.]

[John grins and takes the ball from Tesla's mouth. He gives it a throw and watches the dog fetch it and return it. Tesla was a champion at playing ball, though, and seemed to have endless energy.

He hoped Mycroft wouldn't mind if they used the house, but it wasn't likely Mycroft was using it. That would require the man to stop working.]

[He sprawled out in his armchair as he made the call, watching John and Tesla fondly. Funny--ball and fetch were pretty much the same repetitive motions, yet he never got tired of watching them.]

Mycroft? Yes--yes, fine, thank you.

[A pause; from the way Sherlock's eyes rolled it was clear his brother was teasing him about ulterior motives for calling.]

No, as I'm sure you're already aware, I do not need a temporary security clearance...

[It didn't matter how many times John threw the ball, Tesla was always excited to get it. And it didn't matter how many times Tesla brought the ball back, John's eyes lit up every time.

Though he was playing with the dog, John was also listening to Sherlock's end of the conversation. He thinks Mycroft has calmed a bit about monitoring his brother since Sherlock got married, though he knew the two would never have a normal relationship.]

Hilarious. Listen, you're not going to be using the cottage this week, are you?

[They'd both been fairly surprised at how supportive Mycroft had been--as fractured as their relationship was, they still cared about each other, and Mycroft had quietly let John know that he was glad to see his brother happy.]

Oh, you know why. Don't be obtuse.

[There was a crash from the other end of the room as Tesla, still in pursuit of his ball, ran headlong into an end table.]

...Yes, that was the dog, and yes, we are bringing him.

[John winced as Tesla ran into the table. Poor dog. It wasn't very bright, but it was loving and full of energy.

It sounded as if Mycroft was giving Sherlock a hard time, but he expected the older Holmes would eventually let them use the cottage. Probably with a long suffering sigh.]
