Daemon Meme
In the universe of the His Dark Materials trilogy (or the movie The Golden Compass), every person has a creature called a dæmon that accompanies them all their lives, and is emotionally and metaphysically a part of them. Dæmons are often described as sort of external souls (while the part of the personality in a human's body is the spirit).

Basic Dæmon Facts:
- They take the shape of animals
- They can talk, no matter what their shape
- Children's dæmons can change form at will; around puberty they 'settle' and become one animal permanently
- Neither the person or the dæmon chooses the final settled form, but it always reflects their personality (although not necessarily in obvious or simple ways)
- They are almost always the opposite sex as their human
- If a dæmon feels pain, so will their person, and vice versa
- Being physically apart from one's dæmon causes horrible emotional and physical pain
- Dæmons frequently talk to and touch each other, in ways that reflect or complement their persons' interactions, but dæmons talking to humans other than their own is considered strange, and touching humans not their own is extremely taboo; it generally occurs only between long-time lovers. Touching someone else's dæmon without permission is a terrible violation.
How it works:
Just design a dæmon for your muse and put as little or as much information as you like about them (shape, name, link to a picture or species wiki if you are so inclined) in a comment, with your muse's name and series in the subject. Check out other people's dæmons and let your dæmons interact too.

Jemma Simmons // Agents of SHIELD
I need this.
[Ward's Abyssinian looks the worse for wear. She's out in the open now, things are revealed and she's barely, barely gotten her voice back. She's curled up on Ward's chest, purring, watching Jemma warily. Ward's in a cell and medically trying to heal from a broken larynx.
Her paws knead at his chest as he turns in his sleep. Her meow is a croak.]
Don't wake him. He needs to sleep.
[Though the regret in her voice is palpable. She's hated having to keep a secret. Daemons aren't used to being dishonest. She's Deliliah. She's not HYDRA. All of this has hurt - but in the end, she's all he has and vice versa.]
AU
[Ward won't touch anyone or anything. He's panicking as he stares at the man curled up on the floor, breathing hard and heavy. Garrett's body slides lifeless to the floor and Barkley vanishes with a startled yelp.
Delilah has to keep it together. She has to keep it together, looking from Fitz Simmons to Ward and back again. All she can manage is a yowl.]
Barkley's gone.
Barkley's Gone!
Imma do both I do what I want~
[Honestly, Jemma would really rather be doing anything else. It's because of Ward that Fitz laid in a coma for nine days, and birds being even less suited to swimming than cats are, that his bird laid with him -- but she wasn't gone, and that was about all that kept Jemma from snapping the rest of his neck through. Marcellus trails at her side, head up and on guard.]
There's no one else, right now.
well aiight.
She rolls onto her side and watches Jemma. Check his vitals, adjust his medicine.]
...You'll hurt him.
[She'd hurt him. She feels like hurting him. Some days. Her attempt at wounding is half hearted as she straightens and stares at her.]
He didn't mean it.
no subject
He seemed to mean it when he threw us in the ocean.
[She's forced to listen, though, Delilah is as much a part of Ward as Marcellus is of her, and people don't ordinarily use daemons to lie.]
no subject
[Her ears flatten and stick up straight.]
I don't like lies. He hadn't wanted to hurt you. You changed him.
You changed both of us.
[She doesn't approach Marcellus but she does do her best to meet his gaze. Straightforeward, seemingly honest.]
no subject
He trusted you to make the right decision and you let him down.
[She's no longer speaking to Delilah, but to Ward directly. And she was angry for her own sake, of course, but somehow disappointing Fitz so deeply felt like the worst part of it.]
no subject
I did what I had to do.
I've always done what I had to do.
[His eyes are dark with pain.]
no subject
I'm sure that will be all the difference to Fitz while he is relearning speech and motor function. Wrist.
[She comes closer and motions for his arm. The sooner the examination is done, the sooner she can leave.]
no subject
When am I taken into lock up?
no subject
[She's quiet while she checks his pulse. A little quick, but he has been inactive for a while, and the movement would have been enough to raise it a bit, after so much inactivity. So nothing to worry about.
The bruising at the throat is still an ugly color, but it's the colors of a healing bruise. She carefully palpates the area, checking for anything worrisome.]
no subject
We're free now. HYDRA can't hurt us.
no subject
Jemma, for her part, isn't sure what to say to that. Congratulations?]
I wouldn't concern yourself with Hydra.
AU
Marcellus!
[Her daemon's propensity to say what she was thinking had never been more unwelcome. He settled for a low growl, winding between her feet. The Hydra goon had handled him quite roughly, and it had made the entire thing far more unpleasant than it really had to be.]
Re: AU
We have to go.
[He looks between Fitz and Jemma as he keeps the cat clutched to his chest. The contrary nature of daemons.]
You're all right?
I'm-
[Not. That's just the end of it. He clutches at Delilah who yowls and bites at him. She climbs up over his shoulder like an angry little burr and his features are - placid. Calm.]
...I have to get you out of here. Back to Phil.
no subject
I really don't know that we want to go anywhere with you just now.
[Marcellus paces at her feet, growling, fur standing on end.]
no subject
Fair. That's fair.]
Then hide. Hide because this was all his show and if it fucking...if it ends...
[He wants to curl in a fetal position. He wants to scream. He's barely on his feet.]
Please.
Let me get you to safety.
no subject
Fine, show us the way.
[If he betrayed them again, she would kill him herself, if it was the last thing she ever did.]
no subject
[He's dead]
I know.
[He's dead we killed them we killed them both-]
I know.
[They're dead, after everything they did for us they're dead, dead, dead-]
It was them or them!
[But Ward can't gesture - instead there's two men with a monkey and a dog respectively and he's working. until the cat leaps onto one of the daemons and both people Scream.
When he's done there's two more dead bodies and no daemons and Ward is breathing hard as the cat curls up on his foot and sniffs, making herself as small as possible.
He turns to FitzSimmons then.]
...Can you call Coulson?
no subject
We can't call anyone, they took our phones.
no subject
If I can get you to a console can you call in reinforcements?
no subject
We may be able to manage that, if we haven't been locked out of the system or it hasn't been damaged.
no subject
Think! Think! Because you're not the only person suffering -
[She yelps as Ward grabs her neck.]
...She loved Barkley.
