In the universe of the His Dark Materials trilogy (or the movie The Golden Compass), every person has a creature called a dæmon that accompanies them all their lives, and is emotionally and metaphysically a part of them. Dæmons are often described as sort of external souls (while the part of the personality in a human's body is the spirit).



Basic Dæmon Facts:

- They take the shape of animals
- They can talk, no matter what their shape
- Children's dæmons can change form at will; around puberty they 'settle' and become one animal permanently
- Neither the person or the dæmon chooses the final settled form, but it always reflects their personality (although not necessarily in obvious or simple ways)
- They are almost always the opposite sex as their human
- If a dæmon feels pain, so will their person, and vice versa
- Being physically apart from one's dæmon causes horrible emotional and physical pain
- Dæmons frequently talk to and touch each other, in ways that reflect or complement their persons' interactions, but dæmons talking to humans other than their own is considered strange, and touching humans not their own is extremely taboo; it generally occurs only between long-time lovers. Touching someone else's dæmon without permission is a terrible violation.

How it works:

Just design a dæmon for your muse and put as little or as much information as you like about them (shape, name, link to a picture or species wiki if you are so inclined) in a comment, with your muse's name and series in the subject. Check out other people's dæmons and let your dæmons interact too.

Poe has Raza, a sugar glider, she's more shy than he is, and usually stays curled up in his breast pocket, so there have been speculations made that BB-8 is actually his Daemon.

Mitsunari Ishida's Daemon, a female white wolf, sniffs Finn's Daemon curiously when Mitsunari passes Finn on some street or somewhere.

And so, it's one of the few times Ishida notices his own Daemon, as he usually ignores it.

"Come, Hideyoshi's Wolf Warrior, don't waste your nose on inferior dogs. Come back here."

He doesn't even glance at Finn.

Moreover, if somebody told Ishida that his Daemon isn't male, he'd react with disbelief - and anger. Yeah. He's that oblivious of his own wolf.

Yasha's feathers were ruffled and puffed up. Her bright golden eyes, normally calm and alert, were filled with something more akin to the panic that Poe never showed. He had only just finished his debriefing back on the base a few hours ago, and it had been less than half a cycle since his escape from the clutches of the First Order. He was battered and bruised, though no longer bloody, and he was putting on his best 'everything's fine' grin at the castle he had slipped off to to drown out the feeling of cold metal on his skin and copper in his mouth that the First Order's torture droids had left him with.

The kestrel on his shoulder wasn't speaking. There were too many strangers in the room. But with every drink he took or joke he made her talons squeezed a bit at his shoulder or her beak went back to preening at his hair in a manner that he knew all too well was her deepest expressions of discomfort in his choice of locale and method of dealing with things.

After far fewer drinks than Poe would have liked, he paid his credits and stepped outside to admire the lush forests of Takodana and sit on the steps nearest the lake shore. He smoothed Yasha's chest feathers and watched the sky.

"You have to let it go, Yasha. We're free now." The torture had been nothing compared to the pain he had felt when they had ripped her from him. They had locked her up in a box and taken her away. The fear of losing her had not been enough to break him, but they had found other methods of getting information from him in the end. The important thing was that they had escaped, and he had found her before anyone could reduce her to dust.

He kept up the light brush of the back of his fingers on her soft feathers running his other hand through his hair. Truthfully he had come hoping to run into an acquaintance he knew wouldn't try to talk to him about the First Order or the Resistance. He needed time away from both, and he had few friends outside of the Resistance due to how much of his time was spent there, doing everything he could and more than he should.

But he had not seen Ben inside the castle, and he doubted his timing was lucky enough to bump into the smuggler by chance. The galaxy was a big place and their meetings were often very lucky happenstance.

Her paws knead at his chest as he turns in his sleep. Her meow is a croak.]

Don't wake him. He needs to sleep.

[Though the regret in her voice is palpable. She's hated having to keep a secret. Daemons aren't used to being dishonest. She's Deliliah. She's not HYDRA. All of this has hurt - but in the end, she's all he has and vice versa.]

[Ward won't touch anyone or anything. He's panicking as he stares at the man curled up on the floor, breathing hard and heavy. Garrett's body slides lifeless to the floor and Barkley vanishes with a startled yelp.

Delilah has to keep it together. She has to keep it together, looking from Fitz Simmons to Ward and back again. All she can manage is a yowl.]

[ Sam Winchester was born without a dæmon. In their world, this was completely unheard of, and it instantly set his father on edge, wondering what could be wrong with his son. Growing up, he told all his friends and teachers that is dæmon was a very shy spider that didn't like to leave his pocket to avoid drawing attention to himself, but his lack of a dæmon always made him feel like a freak.

They learned much later that Sam did have a dæmon - it had just been born inside of him rather than outside like everybody else. When Castiel rescued Sam from the Cage, he unknowingly left his soul behind - his dæmon, which Lucifer and Michael had separated from him. After being reunited with his soul, Sam had to learn how to live with it outside his body rather than inside of it.

Ignis is a dark crimson dragon. She is about the size of a tiger, has four legs and a pair of wings. Even though having a dragon dæmon is incredibly rare, that is not the most notable thing about her: she is a creature that has been ripped apart and put back together again, and it shows. Her scales and skin carry innumerable and grotesque scars, and although he may have been beautiful once, she is difficult to look at now. Despite the fact that's she's battered and worn, she's incredibly affectionate and often seeks out physical contact from Sam and other dæmons. (Honestly I'm not up to date with the show past season 8, but I just love this meme.)]

Yugi Mutou | Yu-Gi-Oh!

[ Like most teenagers, Yugi's dæmon hadn't settled into one form yet in high school. In his early teenage years, Wadjet (named so by his grandfather's dæmon due to his inclination towards Egyptian mythology) usually took the form of something small and unassuming, like a butterfly or a mouse, to avoid gaining negative attention from bullies. After completing the Millennium Puzzle, however, she began to take larger forms, though they still tended to be nonthreatening creatures, usually dogs. (Sometimes, people thought they could see the obscure form of a second dæmon alongside Wadjet, and although rumors spread, it was ultimately brushed off as impossible that Yugi Mutou could have two dæmons.)

The day he laid the puzzle to rest is also the day Wadjet finally settled into a form. The irony was not lost on him that she ultimately became a great dane who was probably bigger across than Yugi was high. His friends, while teasing him, said it must be because of his courage and huge heart. She's incredibly affectionate and social, and enjoys climbing onto his friends' laps, forgetting how huge she is. (Since dæmons rarely let people other than their human touch them, the fact that Yugi's dæmon allows and seek out touch from them is a testimate to the absolute trust they have in their friends). Some days, though, she does nothing but pace the floor and bat the air, almost as if she's trying to find something that's no longer there. ]

Bucky no longer has a Daemon. He did, once, a ridiculously fluffy orange tabby named Ginger. But tools, weapons, don't need a visible conscience, so she was removed.

He believes that he killed her.

Since finding Bucky and bringing him in from the cold, Steve and Jo (his yellow mongoose daemon) are painfully aware that... it's just Bucky. It's just Bucky, and not Bucky and Ginger, and they both miss her with this deep, hollow ache that they're sure can never compare to how Bucky feels without her, but they miss her all the same. They're determined not to treat Bucky any differently, though, and Jo, just like Steve, has never really been a stickler for the rules - it's why she talks to Bucky just like she talks to Steve, and there have been several times, since taking Bucky in, that she has very deliberately put herself within touching distance, nearly touching him, because they both feel that if Bucky needs anything they have to offer at all, it's his - including Jo.

Steve still goes running regularly, with Jo usually riding on his shoulder; this morning, when they get back, it's with two cups of coffee and a little paper bag with some pastries, glancing around the apartment. "Buck?" Jo jumps down, and starts scouting the apartment for Bucky - whatever the serum did to them, it lets them get a little farther apart than most. That... only got more pronounced after they crashed the plane and almost - but not quite - died.

Napoleon's daemon is a silver fox named Lestes, which is fitting because its the greek word for robber. Lestes is rare in the fact that he is also male, like Napoleon. He also has multicolored eyes. [Grant ward is an independent Agent, and it kind of diminishes the positive thing he's supposed to be "projecting" when he's literally a cat stroking villain. That's where he's at today. He's a cat stroking villain but damn it all he has a very good reason and that reason is Kara- Kara the agent who's healed, Kara the agent who's gotten better. Her irish setter has color back in his coat and he can't - not watch her.

She's free and he's not. She's healthy and he's not. He's on a literal suicide squad and she's a good agent.

He's fitted with a shock collar that Coulson designed. One wrong move and he gets blasted to smithereens, shocked into oblivion. A hard enough shock would kill him but they're at a place where the Grant Ward problem can be addressed. That's why he's outside in the sun with Delilah curled up on his lap staring into the early morning mists.

He's still got two guards however and they won't let him watch Kara for long. He's kept moving. That's how he's ended up - close to her office.]

[Alveus has a daemon. All men do.
He doesn't remember what it looked like, or it's true name however. She's worn just as many names as he has in the years passed and every time he takes a new host she shifts forever.

Delilah is even more gone then Grant Ward is and that's perhaps why the ghost of the dead man is half mad, arms spread, daemon making a strange half choke half growl sound whenever it laughs. Or speaks.]

It is hardest, for the daemons.

He's as fiercely loyal as she is, and he has a wicked sense of humour, particularly when she's being too serious. He's a bit thinner since her travels with the Doctor, missing a notch out of one ear, and if you look closely, you might be able to make out the fine lines of scarring under his fur.]

[Coronella "Coro" pre-Time War used to change every regeneration. After, she was always a grey-headed flying fox. Following some... well... complications, a very long period of traveling alone, and being chock-full of regenerative energies, her form resettled into a tern--Time Lords break rules even when they're not even trying to.]

Martha, Martha! Ant!

[Even flying overhead in the still-chaotic crowd, Coro can spot Martha and her daemon. She lands on Martha's shoulder, wings fluttering excitedly despite the utter dread coming from the Doctor, who's still stuck in the crowd, albeit nearby.

The bird's sure this is completely a-ok, forgetting that she... wasn't a bird the last time she saw the two.]

They’ve got to cross the field anyway, which gives the fire’s tender plenty of time to study them, and be studied in return. The big wolfhound and the bigger man are both limping slightly, the broken but relentless gait of animals overcoming an old and irksome wound.

They halt a little ways out, Sandor just barely lifting his chin to the man seated under the trees. He doesn’t look up at the sound of rustling wings, though Klara does. She licks her chops once, though that could just be for the meat already sizzling on the spit.

“Venison?” Sandor asks, though he doesn’t actually need the confirmation; there’s a gruff if admiring note in his voice that says as much. “Bloody hard to come by, in these parts.”

Her eyes glance up and over to spot Eirian and Ophelia curled up together in the large chair that sits next to the bed, and she confirms her suspicions of Owen pretending to read while looking over at her were indeed correct.

The papers are set aside on the bedside table and she scoots in closer to him so she can steal a kiss.]

We really need to get out of bed and do something.
