Mod update + AFFILIATION

Hey [community profile] bakerstreet!

ANONYMOUS ACTIVITY

This is long overdue. So, there are a few concerns I wanted to address. Mostly in regards to how frequently memes get 'trolled' with anon comments and how Bakerstreet has been used as a way to dole out unsolicited (and not always constructive) criticism towards other players. I have also seen this as a way to harass other players. There have also been an increase in "trap" memes and it's quite the cause for concern.

Now, since this is a big community, I'd rather not implement any changes without consulting the playerbase. Anyway, just going to toss a few ideas out there and I'd genuinely love your opinion on them.

☞ Disable the anon option and then memes that require the anon option can have it enabled.
☞ Keeping anon, but enabling IP.
☞ Moderated Posting to filter out the trap memes (and keep the meme count per day to something less. But if this is case, how much memes/day?)
☞ Keep things as they are.

There will probably be another mod post around a week after this to announce the decision. I want to keep [community profile] bakerstreet a fun place.

IF YOU ARE BEING ANONYMOUSLY HARASSED, OR SOMEONE IS BOTHERING YOU AT ALL IN THIS COMMUNITY - DO NOT HESITATE TO PM ME ([personal profile] bakerstreet_mod) OR DROP A COMMENT HERE AND I WILL DEAL WITH IT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

LINKING POLICY

Anyway, aside from that. As a tip, not entirely a strict rule - but if you have a meme that LINKS outside of [community profile] bakerstreet to avoid people posting to YOUR post on this community consider DISABLING COMMENTS.

I have nothing against people hosting memes in their communities and linking them here but let's keep confusion to a minimal.

MEME IMAGES

Few things that should be obvious already. DON'T STRETCH THE PAGE (rule of thumb, no images over 650px in width) and please don't use NOT SAFE FOR WORK images as meme headers or alternatively, leave it under a cut with the appropriate warnings.

ADVERTISING: CLUB_ID

So, alright. Some of you may have noticed the appearance of [community profile] club_id. A smut DR trying to get up on it's feet. Anyway, they've asked me to help advertise it. So - come check it out.

CLUB id
[community profile] club_id is a panfandom smut dressing room catering to those players who want played out smut in a kinky setting. All fandoms accepted including canon characters, OCs, AUs and multiples.

Welcome to CLUB id. Within these walls, you'll find a dark and twisted wonderland filled with the tools and people needed to fulfill all the desires you never knew you had. Anything goes at CLUB id. No kink is too deviant for this clientele. You're here purely for pleasure.

Or pain.

Or whatever combination of the two makes you the most excited. There are few rules here. Chief among them is that everyone must enjoy themselves to the fullest extent.
SETTING RULES F.A.Q. SUGGESTIONS CONCERNS OOC

UPDATE: STRIKE SYSTEM + MODERATED POSTING
There are rules in this comm, and though I've never felt the need to be strict about them until now - circumstances have kind of warranted this.

Now I'm not banning anyone because their images stretched the page. So what earns you a strike? Being disrespectful to other players and other asshattery. Now no actions are going to happen unless PROOF follows. Capital mistake to theorize without fact, etc. etc. PLAY NICE. Two strikes results in a ban - but depending on circumstances that can change. Will update profile later.

For the next week as an experiment, Bakerstreet is going to be on moderated posting. See how that fairs, and I'll do another post next week on feedback for the anon on/off discussion.

I vote for turning off anon! If people want to run an IC Anon Meme or something similar, they can always post it somewhere with anon enabled and link it here. But I know people who straight up don't comment on bakerstreet anymore to avoid the possibility of harassment (and I don't mean about reading meme rules or writing two-word tags, I mean vitriolic abuse from their weird grudgewanky stalkers.) I think IP logging is too invasive since it includes the IPs of people who are actually logged in.

Needless to say, I'm not very happy with things, and I think that "trap memes" needs to be more defined.

Also, just because some anons are dicks doesn't mean its a free reign for taking it out on others. I made a meme, and I really don't appreciate the exact same meme being posted THE NEXT POST because they're too butthurt to follow my set of rules.

moderated posting is good in theory, though it might be difficult to operate/maintain. I don't agree with turning anon off, however, because there's a lot of PA sentiment floating around right now, and I honestly don't think it would help all that much.

PA reposting of memes (or in a certain person's case, outright copying open posts without permission) like just happened here should also NOT BE OKAY. moderated posting would help catch stuff like that before it causes unnecessary wank.

those anonymous commenters aren't some strange entity

they are the regulars of bakerstreet

maybe they go about their complaining the wrong way, but is it so wrong to want people to read in a reading based hobby?

Disabling anon will either encourage sock account spamminess or more catty, behind people's back bitching. It's not going to take away complaints and it's not going to make people magically stop being dicks. I also don't see the point in disabling "trap memes". People are expected to read all the rules/scenarios (or at least skim them) before posting anyway, if they actually did so then they wouldn't get "trapped".

So here's one vote for don't change anything.

This is only slightly off topic, but could we maybe come up with a consensus with what is and isn't allowed to be reposted? As someone who has nothing to do with the current kerfuffle but has been burned before, I'd like to see some more etiquette guidelines.

And really? The person with the worst behavior I've seen here is not anons, but [personal profile] con_dar. This person has not once, but twice disrespected their fellow bakerstreet posters. This stunt they pulled right now is pretty much the definition of passive aggressive, and they've taken open posts (not memes) that were intended for other comes without permission and posted them where they weren't wanted. I'm tired of the finger being pointed at anon when logged-in users have been just as shitty.

Just want to say TY MOD for the no-NSFW-images rule. About time.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-19 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
My concern goes out to those of us who are beginner's to the tagging and meme world... Not all of us are "at fault" for not "following the rules". There are some of us who try to interpret the rules as we see them and look to our fellow tagger's for reference.

Let's just say that from now on AND SINCE THIS IS SUCH A BIG DEAL RIGHT NOW, this tagger will be giving full descriptions on all of her tags. So that there are no complaints on this end or the other end of the tag.

But seriously mod, can we just have a policy that if someone doesn't want their meme reposted, they contact you to have it taken down? That seems most fair to everyone.

Of the four options given, I'm leaning towards either moderated posting (if you feel like you can keep up with the additional mod workload) or toward maintaining the status quo. I don't think IP logging or forcing login would do much to address the current problems, and in the long run they could potentially do more harm than good in their effects on the userbase.

One additional suggestion I'd like to float, though- I don't know how much the code here differs from on LJ, but several of the comms I belong to on our sister site have mod-created sticky posts outlining the community's rules and telling users when and how to get in touch with the mods. Having explicit rules about what's allowable conduct here might not squelch all of the bad behavior you've outlined, but it wouldn't hurt, and I think it would definitely help to have the comment/concerns/contact information somewhere more visible.

I wish nearly every person on this post would realize that disabling anon posting would change literally nothing.

I'm not going to go into the psychology of this but if you believe otherwise, I will flat out say you're wrong.

[personal profile] reiks 2012-07-19 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
People are always going to find ways to be a bully if they want to, anon or socks or trap memes. It's a sad fact of life, not just in RP. But at least there are always ways to try and curb the worst of it, so I will also be casting a vote for disabling anon entirely, and have memes that require anon comments to have a link posted elsewhere. While it definitely won't get rid of the problem, it's at least a step towards less of it overall.

The trap memes, well, I think that's going to be a judgement call. There are a lot of decent memes that have specific rules that need to be followed, and it would be the player's fault for not reading them properly. But the more obvious ones meant for harrassing can always be brought to the mod's attention and removed from the community.

Wow, useless comment is useless. \o.O/ But thanks for also enforcing the image size rules too, modlies! Every time larger ones are posted it throws my browser out of whack and it weeps.

Really, I think this one should be a choice made by the mods. After all, this is your comm, so you call the shots. I think that you should probably decide what kind of atmosphere you want your comm to have and decide what you want to do to get that to happen.

I'm not particularly pro- or anti-anon otherwise, but I agree that I feel that hostile, unsolicited anon comments can make for an unfriendly environment. Whether disabling it will help or not can't be said for sure, but it's worth pointing out that if it doesn't help at all, it could always be enabled again.

Alright everyone, although this has NOTHING to do with the meme at hand, I'm apologizing for the original meme reposting incident.

Sorry for the trouble I caused you Stables and sorry for anyone I triggered by not putting everything behind a cut.

And with that I bid all you anons a fond farewell for the night.

Also, logging IPs/trying to get IPs banned through Dreamwidth would be useless because nowadays changing your IP address is as easy as resetting your router. Most ISPs use dynamic addresses instead of statics.

-- moderated posting. this might slow down the rapid reposting of the same few memes anyway, which would be awesome. it might actually encourage people to use the posts that are posted instead of going "oh it was a few hours ago/yesterday, i'm late, time to repost." you could also catch so called "trap memes" this way.
-- i'm going to go against the grain and say leave anon on. turn on ip logging if you want, but that doesn't generally deter people because of proxy use and the inability to ban by ip on dreamwidth (feel free to correct me on that if i'm wrong).
-- require people to post rules before the cut and bold whether or not they allow blank commenting.

and that's about where i stand.

Mod, deleting threads in this post isn't going to make you look good, either. Just ban [personal profile] hullo_sweetie for being an Unpleasant Human Being and everyone here is going to go away. The only people who get made fun of on BS typically have it coming. If you walk into a pole, people are gonna laugh even though you hurt yourself. After they laugh, they will tell you to look where you are going.

In this case, a bunch of people (or maybe just this one woman) walked into the metaphorical poles and people laughed, then said "read where you're going next time" the end, that's all there is to it.

Also this person has been rude many times before, so.
