The fact settles in your stomach like an ice cold rock. There's a good chance you're going to die here.

It's not surprising, really; you're either a prisoner in a most dangerous place possible or stuck in a cataclysmic event, both choices equally terrifying. You are surrounded on all sides by death, torture, despair, and hopelessness...all this, but you are not alone. Through this experience, you have come to meet someone else, someone in the same situation as you, a prisoner or a survivor. Perhaps you are both ruthless fighters, or total pacifists, or some combination of power and a calming influence - an important mix, given than you can't lose your heads.

This complete degradation and mutual understanding has brought you together in in a way no one else can understand. This bond is not platonic; romantic may not be the right word, not exactly, but you are closer to them than you've ever been with anyone else. It's a fire-forged relationship, made in the most dire of times. To you, they are your world. And you've made a promise, to them and to yourself. You'll get them out of this alive.

...even if you can't say the same about yourself.

[The scent of burning flesh lingered in the air and made him weep uncontrollably. It pained him, the destruction, the incineration, of so much beauty. Huge tears rolled down his cheeks, seemingly without any likelihood of ceasing. He felt as if his heart were breaking—again. Why did the world destroy beauty? And once it was destroyed, why couldn't he bring it back?

Fire, always the fire consumed it—! Like the flames of Hell.

Suddenly, he turned toward his Master and seized his hand, sort of forgetting his own supernatural strength.]

Ryuunosuke!

[Everyone always assumes that Azula has killed people before. She was in a war, she was one of the 'bad guys', but the truth is that, while she was on the 'wrong' side of the war, she still managed to avoid ever killing anyone.]

[That's why now, even though the battle continues to rage around them, she's standing stock still. She looks at the charred body in front of her, eyes wide in shock. She just incinerated someone. Every last muscle is cooked through, eyes melted and skin crisped.]

[She'd gone into this battle full tilt--it was life or death after all--but she'd never expected that she'd be facing an opponent who wouldn't be able to get out of the way of one of her fire blasts before. She'd expected to burn them, maybe enough to drop them out of the battle. But she had not been prepared for making a direct hit.]

[She forces herself to move, but only tips her head, looking down now at her hands, staring at them in horror as she wonders, how could she have done such a thing?]

[Ed was never meant to be on the battlefield. Even before he was forced out of the vehicle, he had argued. He wasn't about to take a human life, that wasn't something he could do.

Al. For Al. Amestris was losing, and all State Alchemist were being deployed. But can he do it? The pounding in his heart, the way his palms sweat beneath beneath his gloves says he can't, and he really doesn't want to. Al doesn't want people to die to have his body returned, they'd established that.

It's been as horrible as he thought it would be. All around him bodies lay unmoving, dead, their lifeless corpses sometimes laying in twos or threes. Those white gloves are now red with the blood of those he wanted to save. Some of that is from his own enemies, people that he thought were alive, but they won't let him check. Instead, he's pushed and told to go forward, promises of punishment for insubordination ringing in his ears. Why couldn't he find the Colonel? Since getting the order, nothing he did had put him in contact with Mustang. Somehow, it felt like if he could talk to him, this wouldn't have happened.

He's alone now. Some of the people on his side died, some spread out. When he hears footsteps approach, he forces his golden eyes to go up. A woman. Ed was all for equal opportunity so that isn't what bothers him. She's alive, and they want him to change that. He can't. He can't do this anymore. Human life was precious, alchemy was never meant to be used to take it away. You couldn't take away what you couldn't give back, it was an important rule in alchemy. If you ignored it, you got Ed, you got Al, and both of those things are horrible.]

Stay back! [Here, normally, he would be as threatening as he possibly could and hope that would scare her away. 'Another victim. Guess I'll add you to the rest of my bodies.' Which would make things really awkward when/if she called his bluff. Now, however, there's an almost pleading tone to his voice. Ed is physically capable of fighting, but he doesn't think he mentally is.

Does she hear him? Something about her hands seem to shake her.]

Whatever reason you think you're fighting, it's not worth it. This doesn't fix anything.

[Maybe he's not talking to her ta all, maybe he's talking to the same men who had forced him into the war zone.]
