A Chance for Redemption?
![]() Red's in your ledger or you're making your way towards a crimson page by your very nature. Did you simply do what you had to do in order to survive? No one could understand how you lived. That could be just what you tell yourself, though; really, you might have enjoyed your crimes. You're not proud of some of what you've done, no matter what, and there's a part of you that will probably never heal. If you were someone else looking in, you'd never be able to stand looking at you, much less stomach you. But someone does all of that willingly. They can look past the blood on your hands and the bad decisions weighing on your shoulders. It's you they care about, not your history. Actually, they may even love you, though you can't begin to fathom why.

[Then Makoto is extra glad to be able to find him near the water]

But mostly, they don't trust him, won't trust him, and the feeling is absolutely mutual.
So he walks away. He's done his good deed, he's done the best he can. He brought them back, got them out of immediate harms way. The rest is up to themselves.
But he doesn't know where he's going. But he ends up there of course, at the oceanside where the sky is wide and deep and the water has it's own scent on the breeze and where, if he closes his eyes for a moment, he can see Makoto poised against the small railing, arms crossed, waiting for him.
He sits down, far from the edge at first, though he thinks as the night wears on he might be better served throwing himself into the water. And he closes his eyes.

Then he runs.
Out of breath, he slows down as he nears the water. It's getting dark, and he's exhausted, and there's no chance he can sleep for hours yet. Not until he finds...
Oh.
There.
He moves into Alain's line of sight, and walks towards him. Smiling. Smiling so much.

He winces and turns his head away. Makoto's smile is unsettling. There's no reason for him to be making that kind of expression at him. Not now.
Alain pushes his back against the column and digs his heels in and slowly, painstakingly, slides to his feet. He sways as he regains his feet and almost collapses right back to the pavement, but he manages not to, and pushes away from the column and stumbles a few steps away. "Go home."

Makoto follows, keeping a distance of a few feet at most. He really doesn't want Alan to collapse again. Yes, he can take it. That's not the point.
"I am home," he says quietly.
