[ So going stag to the prom wasn't the worst thing ever. It's been fun so far but when the slow dances start up it does get a little boring.

Chris is slumped back in a chair at a table with Sam, picking idly at a thread on his sleeve. Everyone else is either dancing to the beautiful song currently blasting from the speakers or off elsewhere, probably admiring the enormous balloon octopus decor.

But enough is enough. Chris is done being a wallflower so he jumps to his feet and extends his hand to Sam in a way he hopes comes across as dashing, or at the very least cheesy. (Either is fine.) ]

[at some point or another, however, he manages to slip away and makes his way over to Henley. when it seems like she's unoccupied (or when he manages to make her unoccupied through clever use of angry eyebrows at whoever happens to be around), he steps up to her and barrels into a conversation]

Okay, you need to dance with me. [a beat] Because if I have to get my toes stepped on by one more groupie, I think I might just make a break for it, and I'm pretty sure that would make a shitty headline.

[ by the time she comes back, everything is different. she takes a few hours looking up everything that happened in her absence. the devil of hell's kitchen has a new reputation and a new name, and the man who'd tried to keep it under his thumb is in prison. things are relatively quiet, even back at work, but she knows better than to believe it's going to last. she knows better, even, than to think that things are as calm as they seem; if there's one thing she's taken away from everything it's that everyone hides something, no matter how honest and good they believe they are.

it's a couple of weeks before they see each other. she'd left him a voicemail letting him know she was back in town, but that was the furthest things had gone until tonight. something had managed to get through his armor and he'd called asking if she could stop by on her way home ( he doesn't know yet that she's had to move ) - apparently the new armor isn't infallible.

things aren't as bad now as they have been in the past; it only takes about half an hour for her to tend to his wounds. after that they just...talk for a little while. he asks where she went, she tells him about visiting family and getting to go to the beach for the first time in a few years. she's standing while talking, kind of exploring the space, when she eventually comes upon his record player. ]
