Even though things are tough all over, Steve and Bucky always manage to get by. They find their ways and take things as they come, whether it's making a stew last for a whole week by adding more potatoes, or spreading the money around so that Steve has medication when he needs it even if the holes in his shoes get a little bit bigger in the meantime. Sometimes Bucky will take a job that doesn't last as long as they expect it to, and when that happens Steve will grab a few more papers on his route trying to make up for it. And sometimes the meager heat in their tiny tenement apartment just doesn't cut it on the worst winter nights, so that's when the two of them will pile together on one bed and double up on the blankets.

This particular winter has seen a lot of nights like that, with a lot of snow and a lot of blizzards, with the kind of wind that shrieks through the alleys like the dead rising and pries into every tiny crack it can find. Steve looks forward to seeing the city all covered in white when snow falls in thick, delicate flurries from the sky, but it's that wind that really makes him shiver down to his bones even from the safety of the bedroom. Tonight's one of those nights where the wind's really howling out there and the snow's coming down so thick that like as not the whole borough will be shut down come morning, so Steve and Bucky had thrown the blankets over one bed and huddled up close, leeching warmth from each other beneath the covers.

Steve knows that he's a... disorganized sleeper, being the kind who'll starfish halfway across the bed without waking up and Bucky often ends up herded into one small corner by his bedmate's nocturnal squirming. They both try their best to offer at least some cursory personal space, knowing full well that they're going to be tangled up like old laundry on a twisted line by morning. That kind of thing happens when you get used to sleeping with a person since the two of you were kids.

Fortunately for Steve, Bucky never seems to mind it that much. Which is great because Bucky somehow gives off better heat than their stove, and sometimes Steve'll wake up just enough to know exactly what he's doing as he burrows into his best friend's chest or tucks up underneath a sprawled arm, but Bucky never pushes him away in the morning, and sometimes Steve imagines he even gets pulled a little closer in the middle of the night. He likes that a lot... even if he figures admitting it would be a mistake.

Tonight, it's a particularly savage howl of wind rattling the fire escape that wakes Steve in pitch blackness. He's cold, he realizes, because the covers have slipped down a little way and he's got one foot sticking out, so he pulls that in and tugs the blankets higher over his head. Against his back is the radiant heat that is Bucky, who must still be asleep; it's not like Steve'll wake him, right, if he just wriggles back the tiniest bit, so he can soak up a little more of that warmth?
