Daemon AU

DAEMONS

A dæmon is the animal embodiment of a person's inner self - their soul made corporeal. In childhood, daemons can shapeshift; around puberty, they settle into one form which represents a person's personality.

Daemons can talk, are typically of the gender opposite their human, and can't go more than a few yards from their human half. Any pain felt by a person is felt by their daemon, or vice versa, and to touch someone else's daemon is painfully intimate and the greatest taboo.

RNG:
1. meetings (mean snap judgments; what do you think of someone with a snake soul?)
2. fight scenes (are a lot more badass with a lion at your side, or tricky when your weak spot is a poodle)
3. rescues (are difficult if your daemon can't drag theirs to safety. you won't break the taboo, will you?)
4. cuddling (gets weird when your alligator snuggles up to their rabbit)
5. confined spaces (are more claustrophobic with the risk of touching someone's soul)
6. poor conditions (when your cat can't swim or your dragonfly might freeze)
7. lies (are harder to tell with daemons telegraphing body language)
8. touching (from a torturer is horrifying; from someone intimate, it's powerful)
9. abnormalities (include same-gender daemons, limitless separation ranges, or inhuman lack of a daemon)
10. suddenly (everyone has daemons. they didn't before. what the hell.)

Want to rehash a canon scene, now with daemons? Make up your own prompt? Just here to dump your "why X has Y animal" in a toplevel? Go nuts.

Meetings

Illya wasn't too happy with the idea of working with an american that wasn't his usual one, neither was Yana. There were worried that Napoleon or Gaby, if not both, were going to get themselves kidnapped or killed while he was gone.

But U.N.C.L.E. didn't had all that many agents that knew their way around Moscow and had Waverly asked him personally. The man treated Illya better than all his previous handlers and just for that alone he agreed to the mission. Illya wasn't happy when he discovered that they didn't had full access to the man's file and that he only had a name and a vague idea of what they were doing.

"Winchester?" Illya's voice sounded more like a demand than a question. Yana was behind him, a giant furry shadow with piercing eyes, and her ears flattened against her skull at the view of the lioness.

Sasha got up first staring the wolf down with her whiskey colored eyes. She wanted to rumble, but out of respect for her human she did not. Sam believed in meeting any form of rudeness with polite kindness. He holds his hand out. "Sam Winchester that's me," he says calmly. "You must be Illya," he says, "CIA spoke highly of you."

Sam knew the man wouldn't be happy about not knowing everything about Sam and his mission, but his work was dangerous and not a lot of people enjoyed hearing magic was both real and being used to create chaos in the waking world.

Yana was quiet and silent but her gaze never falter and she refused to blink first. She rarely made noise, why to give the enemy a warning growl? Better attack them when they didn't see it coming. Her human was the same, not prone to gloat or talk more than necessary.

For a moment, Illya frowned at the use of his first name, not even Napoleon said it so carelessly. But he shook the man's hand with a nod, returning the polite gesture.

"Afraid I can't return the compliment." The accent was thick and Illya had a tendency to forget that pronouns exists but aside from that his english was easy to understand. "Haven't heard much about you at all, just that you need help and that's enough for us."

"He's hiding something." Yana commented matter of factly. It was not a question and Illya knew better than to question his daemon when she sensed that something was wrong.

"Samuel has his reasons for doing so," Sasha replied before Sam could speak. Sam shot his daemon a hard look. "What did I say about breaking things to people gently Sash." He turns back to the Russian. "I'm head of the FBI's occult division that's why my file was sparse. Most people don't believe magic is real, so we normally operate on the down low and do our own foot work, but getting into Russia is difficult for a normal agent if the German occultists catch wind I'm after them it could bring war down on us."

"We appreciate the bluntness." They really did, it saved time. Illya was never one to beat around the bush and neither was Yana.

He raised an eyebrow at the explanation but that was the extent of his surprise. He had heard about strange things happening here and there, he's traveled around the world after all, but never gave it all that much thought. Yana looked up at Illya.

"Do you remember Aleister Crowley? And Lewis Spence's book?"
"Da, da..." Illya waved a hand and then frowned again. Germans and occultism were nothing new and usually Nazis were involved with those subjects. Not Illya's favourite people.

"They won't catch you. And we better get moving, got private plane to catch. You can tell me more about it as we get there."

"Deal," Sam agrees warming up to his companion slightly as he and Sasha fall into step beside the Russian, "my story is weird and not a lot of it is going to make sense to you, but I don't sugar coat the truth. You need to know what you might be facing."

Ilya lead them to the parking lot, towards a Austin A55 Van. Discreet enough so they wouldn't be drawing too much attention to themselves but with enough space for both of their daemons.

U.N.C.L.E must have known what sort of daemon the american had, and Illya was glad that they thought ahead. Yana knew how to act professional but Sasha's presence was going to put her on edge eventually.

"Life is always weird, Winchester. Just look at us." He opened the back fo the van for the daemons and stared at Sam. A russian teaming up with an american for the second time in the history of cold war. "But we make the best of it."

Sam nodded. "This is true," he admits as he watches Sasha hop into the vehicle, "I never thought I'd even meet a Russian much less work with one. My dad would be turning over in his grave right now."

"We are not disease."

Illya snapped, not even bothering to hide his irritation. He had enough with the looks and hushed murmurs he got at work from certain co-workers, he didn't need opinionated comments from a stranger. Yana even shot Sam a dirty look and flattened her ears against her skull as she got into the van. Illya closed the doors and moved to the driver's seat without another word.

Sam held up his hands in a peaceful gesture. "I didn't mean it like that and I'm sorry if it did. My people skills stink because I was raised on the road until I was eighteen. My dad, brother and I didn't socialize much. I honestly didn't mean to offend you. I just meant I've worked with a lot of different people over the years and I didn't think working with Russia was ever going to happen. Your mythology has always been of interest to me."

Illya didn't reply immediately, just waited for the man to get in the car, but his frown softened. He had the social skills of a pack of wolves, who was he to judge.

"On the road? Why that? Because of father's job?"

Sam hops in and takes a second to arrange his limbs to fit in the car. "Yes only it wasn't a job he ever got paid for. My mother was killed by a supernatural entity when I was barely a year old and he made it his mission to track the thing down and kill it. Along the way he hunted anything supernatural that was hurting people." Sam shrugs. "I told you my story was weird."

Two pair of piercing blue eyes stared as Same. The mention of a mother immediately caught Illya and Yana's attention and they were both silent for a few seconds before the blond started the engine.

"Sorry about your matushka." The wolf said, echoing what Illya was thinking, and she sounded like she meant it.

"If it was so dangerous, why didn't your father leave you and your brother under someone else care?"

Sasha and Sam both nod and say "Thank you," in tandem. "He did from time to time, but not very much. He wanted us to understand the world isn't always a safe place and that we needed to learn early how and when to fight back. Dean and his deamon became my mother and my brother until I decided to walk away."

Yana flickered her ears and only reply and lied down in a somewhat more relaxed position.

"That he got right, the world's not safe." Illya kept glancing at the rear-view mirror from time to time, making sure no one was already following them. "But it's our job to make it better. Why walk away? Got tired of the roadtrip?"

"I was ready to put my skills to better use," Sam says, "the rumors that the Germans where dabbling into dangerous waters made me realize my hunter background could help. So I went to college, then got my masters and the FBI caught wind of me and I got pulled in."
