The (Possibly Awkward) Dating Meme

Dating is, when you think about, really weird. It's a totally different thing for different people. Some are friends for years before they date; others start dating on the same day they met. Sometimes, there's a lot mushy stuff involved; other times, the couple acts just like friends. None of this is necessarily right or wrong.

Whatever it is, your character and the character you reply to are now dating. How? That's up to you. Whether it be awkward or not, the relationship will be uniquely theirs.

[No one told him he had to do any reading! Looking unimpressed, he sets his menu on the table and glances at it, his chin in his hand as he props an elbow on the table. He honestly doesn't know what a lot of these food names are and while once upon a time he had to go through an exercise with Ichigo and the shop Shinigami to find something to feed him, he hadn't paid much attention to what they were called. All they found out was that while he hunger was nearly endless he was a little picky.]

That one.

[He points at some sort of ice cream dish in the middle. While it wasn't the most elaborate one out there he recognized some of the things on it at the very least. Just... not what they're called.]

Hm?

[The Shining Fall Romance Parfait, is it? She's curious. It looks appetizing, she'll give it that much.]

Very well.

[She closes the menu, surrendering it to the waitress.]

We'll have one of these, please. Two spoons.

[...What's that look for? The name of it sounded ridiculous but so what? He slides the other menu over to the human she spoke to.]

...Ya have to use spoons?

[What are table manners anyway?]

What did you think we were going to use?

[She squints at him. Honestly, it's like being with a child. When Rukia is the educated one, that's when you know you're in trouble.]

[He shrugs dismissively, his eyes flicking to the window beside them but after a moment his gaze slides to the side. Mostly the noise of human conversations gave him a bit of a headache and he didn't like to tune into them but he bought up his other hand to jab a thumb at a nervous and shy pair of them that sitting at a table across the room.]

Look, they act like that a lot of the time for some reason.

[Oh, no answer? Rukia's smile turns sly.]

Were you going to bury your face in the bowl and slurp it up like that? Fool~

[She rests her cheek in her hand and turns to look where he pointed. Oh? A couple? Interesting. Rukia studies them quietly. Both seem to be blushing an awful lot. There's too much noise to hear what they're saying, but it seems like they're taking turns rubbing the back of their heads and fidgeting.]

Is that what we're supposed to look like...?

[Y-No! No... ...okay, maybe. Wouldn't be the first time he's done that. The Hollow scowls at her for a moment before glancing back out the window, bored of the two humans.]

Don't kid yerself. Ichigo would look that stupid but some of the humans seem to look like that when they're with someone else on their own.

Hm...

[She's starting to think that she'll need to watch the cues of whoever her date winds up being. If he's grouchy like Ichigo's Hollow, then there's no need for her to try and be charming. But if there's awkward laughing and blushing, then she should imitate what she's witnessing now.]

Oi.

[She looks at him directly.]

[He starts a bit, looking at Rukia like she had two heads. She can't be serious. On the best of days he has the emotional connection to people as the sky does to the ground.]

[She folds her hands on the table in front of her.]

I won't ask you to pretend you're in love with me. Just a little interest is fine, enough that you would have bid money to go out with me. I can better gauge my reactions that way.

[He just stares at her in silence. Lack of concept of money aside, she is seriously asking him to act like one of the humans. He's seen a lot of them but it was purely on an observational view... for potential food.]

...What do I get outta this?

[Isn't that enough? ...Apparently not. Even so, she can't imagine what he could possibly hope to gain from Rukia.]

[There isn't enough food in the world to satisfy him and he doesn't think another one of those... parfait things will cut it. Hmm..]

A favor I'll call ya in for later. 's only fair.

I won't agree to something that may go against my moral principles. I have the right to refuse your favor if it goes against my duties as a shinigami, or causes harm to another.

[So don't ask her to let him eat anyone. It won't happen.]

As I said, it depends on the nature of the favor. But I won't break my promise readily, so long as you give the rest of this date your best effort.

[She knows he can do better than this. A child could.]

[She has no idea how much she's actually asking of him. The Hollow makes a non-committal noise and holds out his other hand to her halfway across the table. Despite his aversion to human contact earlier, as long as she sticks to the deal it better be worth it. Besides, proving her wrong about the humans is a partial win.]

[Oh? That's unexpected. He really is trying, then. Rukia looks at his hand, then at him. She smiles, appreciatively, and places her slim pale hand in his. Though she's an aristocrat, there are callouses on her fingertips, and her palm is slightly rough to the touch. But her fingers curl delicately in his as a lover's might, and she rests her cheek in her other hand.]

[It takes nearly all his will not to pull away at the clasping of their hands. If she tells anyone about this she's dead. Pure and simple. He looks at her hand, his eyebrows drawn a bit. Humans seriously do this constantly? He's not used to this gentle shit.]

I dunno why they do this, it ain't like the other human is gonna fly away.

[She regards him thoughtfully.]

Is it really so upsetting? Or are you simply unaccustomed to a woman's touch?

[That earns her an unamused look. It isn't upsetting, it's weird and he doesn't like it. Holding someone else's hand is just so... so weird!]

I don't make it a habit to hold hands with humans on my downtime.

Fortunately for you, I'm a shinigami. So there's no problem, is there?

[She looks up as the tall glass of ice cream is placed between them, complete with two spoons and two straws. There's a variety of fruit expertly decorating piles of whipped cream and chocolate sauce. Rukia picks up her spoon with her free hand and digs right in.]

[Even worse. When the ice cream arrives, he kind of just... looks at it for a moment before picking up the other spoon and giving it the same mistrustful treatment. He really didn't like these utensils... or eating at a table. Felt too foreign to him.]

[He's going for a slice of kiwi, so Rukia's spoon bats his aside to steal it.]

[She smirks as she eats it.]
