① ( SOBER ): whether it be because you haven't had a chance to find the right glass for you or because you aren't much of a drinker, you're starting to look like the only one in the room who's managed to resist the temptation to throw their heads back and guzzle a few choice bottles. time to enjoy standing awkwardly in the corner while everyone else has fun, or tend to some friends who may have had one too many.

② ( TIPSY ): oh, geez. when did they decide to make moving floorboards? and since when has it been so darn difficult to walk in a straight line? you've only had a glass or two, but it's already starting to get to you, nipping at your nose and making you feel all bubbly and warm inside. hopefully this isn't the start of something worse.

③ ( DRUNK ): you may or may not have just made a series of terrible decisions and suddenly find yourself not remembering a single one of them. maybe that girl over in the corner of the room who hasn't turned your way all night looks like a nice target for a spontaneous game of fisticuffs, or that guy over there is probably, maybe, your next husband. maybe you're one of the unfortunate ones having to rush to the bathroom and get acquainted with the white tiles for a while? hopefully there's someone level-headed enough to hold your hair back for you.

④ ( HUNGOVER ): who invented noise and why did they make it so painful? whether you've managed, by some miracle, to wake up in (a) bed, or you find yourself sitting up from under the kitchen table with someone else's underwear on your head, the splitting headache you've got going for you isn't showing any sympathy for your overnight activities. better get to drinking a few litres of water and crawling under a few blankets for the day.

Julius was very, very late to the party.

It was not so much that it was the type of party where lateness mattered because anyone would notice or care. But he'd had to drive there, so by the time he arrived, he was exponentially more sober than literally anyone else he'd yet identified. He'd picked up a Scotch to try and rectify the problem, but as no one else had stopped drinking, he was probably doomed to be behind.

He was too old for shots, which would have been his younger self's solution to the problem. Instead, he wandered, feeling vaguely like someone's older brother who'd been invited by mistake.

Maria had mingled for the start of the night before ducking behind the bar, taking a breather from the crowd. Although she'd had apprehensions about the party she'd found it strangely enjoyable, and her drinks might have had a little something to do with that.

[In hindsight, having more than two fingers' worth of anything called dragon piss probably isn't the smartest course of action Cullen's ever taken. But Trevelyan had all but dragged him down to the Herald's Rest just after sunset, smelling more than a little like wine when she'd marched into his office and demanded that he stop what he was doing and have some fun.

Which isn't such a terrible idea, though it takes two full drinks for Cullen to stop thinking about the reports piled up on his desk--all the company he'd expected to have this evening, and more than likely late into the night. Soon, though, he's snorting into his tankard as Bull tells them of a mission involving more literal nug shit than any man should have to deal with in a lifetime.

Cullen's shoulder bumps Dorian's as he leans in to take another drink, glancing at the bottle Dorian's ringed fingers are curled around and nodding in its general direction, still pressed warm against him.]

That looks considerably less vile than whatever I'm drinking.

[It wasn't often that Inara allowed herself to drink too much, normally she stuck to one glass of whatever she was drinking... BUT today wasn't a normal day. She'd spent part of the day snapping at Mal about one thing or another (she couldn't even rightly remember what it was about at this point.) and so she'd told herself that she'd just needed one glass to sooth her nerves.

Well one glass had turned to two and that had quickly changed to three. She was feeling a lot better and had somehow managed to move with the bottle from her shuttle to the table in the dining room.

She was still working on that third glass when she hears a noise from behind her. She glances over her shoulder and her eyebrows lift seeing Mal.]

Oh, don't be like that, Mal. Come, sit with me.

[When Foggy comes to, it's very slowly and very, very painfully. There is--a gigantic hole in his memory where last night should be, save for little bits and pieces that he thought were good ideas at the time but now, in the light of day, realizes were horrible, terrible, horrible ideas. Also, he might be drooling into a pillow, and it is not his pillow, this is not his couch, and this is not his apartment.

Realization slams in just then--this is Matt's apartment. With the realization also comes the raging headache, and Foggy squints at the sunlight streaming in from the windows, brows knitting together in the bleary, reluctantly-awake way of the deeply, truly hungover. Probably last night's celebratory drinking was a bit too celebratory, that's the only conclusion he can draw here, and he tries his best to pull himself to a more vertical position on the couch.]

Agh. [Eloquent.] Next time, do not drink the eel. Bleh.

[Okay, Karen had drunk the eel again, and why was there even an eel in this damn alcohol anyway? They were hanging out at Josie's, and lately Karen had been drinking a bit more than usual to ignore the crushing truth she was hiding.

Thankfully, she wasn't seeing three of Matt, but it was damn close. Foggy, her usual drinking partner had been seeing Marcy a lot recently. Karen was happy for him, she really was, because she wanted to see him happy. Foggy was family, after all. So, she and Matt had decided to kick back after a grueling case, and headed over to Josie's to unwind. It was nice, she never got a chance to talk to Matt. Karen realized that Matt was a complete enigma to her, and she had wanted to change that fact.]

So, Matt? Where do you go every night? You are never around when Foggy, and I call on you. I mean, I've come to realize that you are one of the most special people in my life, and I know nothing about you.

[Then she hiccuped, and couldn't stop, which made her laugh. Oh, this was going to be a very interesting conversation, or night. She couldn't decide what trumped what here?]
