You know what's awesome? Pillow forts. For whatever reason, everyone loves a good pillow fort. There's just something about making a comfy little "hidey hole" of sorts that brings out the kid in all of us.

There's a bad storm going on outside, completely with torrential rains, strong winds, and deafening thunder. Mark hated storms on a good day, but on day where the filmmaker had had a way too stressful week? The anxiety and stress amplified his fear of the storm, causing him to steal all of the blankets and pillows from around the loft.

The building of the fort was something that helped keep his mind off of the crashing and the fact that the skylight was leaking again. He soon retreated within the warmth of the blankets and pillows, curling up tightly. The blankets managed to somewhat muffle the sound of the storm raging outside, but it wasn't enough. He was still far too nervous for his own good.

The sound of the loft door sliding open caused the man to peek out from beneath a blanket. "I can explain..."

"It's a pillow fort. It needs explanation?" Izumo chuckled, as he worked his way out of his rain boots and damp coat. "I hope you left room for me in there."

Because as soon as he stuck a pot or bucket under that leaking skylight, he was going to be worming his way into a blanket, to get rid of the chill of the storm outside. He was a grand fan of the simple joys in life, and a pillow fort definitely counted.

[No one is ever too old for pillow forts, he will never admit to Dick. So when he sees someone working on one he stops to lean against the doorway and shoves his hands into his jean pockets. After a moment of being unable to determine who exactly is in there amidst the assorted sheets and pillows, he calls out to them.]

[ the guest room is positively palatial - perhaps appropriately, for an estate house that actually resembles a palace - but the cavernous quality of the place is the exact opposite of comfortable, in hawke's not-so-humble opinion. it's extravagance beyond function, the hallmark of all things orlesian, and after only a night in residence (one of four, unfortunately, on an generous invitation he'd found himself unable to duck) the drafty, echoing space has proven too much for his distinctly ferelden sensibilities.

so he's taken it upon himself to make a few improvements. it helps that the servants have all apparently been instructed to oblige messere hawke's every whim without complaint - because none of them do, even at his third or fourth request for as many pillows and blankets as they can carry. (though he does start to catch the occasional odd look thrown his way, once he's begun to amass his mountain of assorted bedclothes and cushions. it's still not nearly enough to discourage him.)

by the time hawke's finished, he's built a suitably less extravagant fort out of the larger space of the room, a wide tent of mismatched sheets and quilts anchored on one side off the enormous mantle of the bedroom's oversize fireplace. inside, pillows and stolen cushions are heaped up generously around the hearth, the low fire still burning just beyond it warming the air and his makeshift bed (the real one only occupied now by the loose spill of his discarded armor - and one exiled mabari, still noticeably huffy after another long conversation on the many reasons why he is not allowed into the fort).

the whole thing is a little childish, perhaps, but tiring as the rest of the week's festivities are bound to be, a moment's escape is not something hawke's going to begrudge himself for any semblance of propriety. besides - it's almost a guarantee that there won't be any further invitations extended to him, after this. it's a win-win.

especially when he finally runs into fenris, again (whom he cannot blame at all for wanting to be as little seen as possible, around here - hawke does feel a little guilty for dragging him along in the first place). with a bottle of some borrowed wine in one hand and a couple of books tucked up under his arm, hawke is just stepping back into his room, to avail himself of the comfortable monstrosity he's constructed, but stops in his tracks when he catches sight of the elf. the weather outside is dreadful, the icy and wet in-between of not quite winter, and the day has darkened out of the sky so quickly that even their gracious host (the comtesse whose name hawke can't quite recall, making this all the more awkward) has turned in early - but this lightens his mood considerably.

he wasn't expecting to see fenris again until (unless) he came to haunt his room - and only possibly share the bed - well into the night. ]

Fenris! You have impeccable timing. [ holding out the bottle (compliments of a serving girl on whom he'd actually managed to make a good impression), he gestures inward, toward the pile of questionable judgement he's constructed in his absence. ] Join me for a drink?

[ Sometimes a man just needs a small, cozy space to hang out in, okay. It's by no means the prettiest fort he's ever made, but with his spare futon as a base, lots of pillows, chairs to provide some structure with as many blankets and sheets as Sam could spare for this project, it's more than good enough.

Plus, he's got snacks, and he's got his laptop to watch movies and tv shows on. What more could you want? ]

[ James wiggled his way through what he presumed was the opening (for a pillow fort, it’s actually rather structurally sound). He knew Sam was in there from the din of whatever show he had playing on his laptop. Crawling around on his belly wasn’t anything knew for him, he’d been a soldier in another life, after all. Once he was settled inside the fort, he gave a sidelong look to Sam as if to silently ask if he actually thought he could hide. ]
