[The orderlies will love that, he's sure.]
no subject
They'll love that.

[John is amused. He puts the eyedrops down.]
Three times daily until the bottle is run out. Leave the rest of the laundry for tonight. Have the orderlies work on it tomorrow. alright? That's an order.
no subject
We're perfectly clear, Sir.
[He's not one to experience... attraction like normal people, but - there might be a little dilating of the pupils.]
no subject
Good. I better not catch you scrubbing wash tomorrow, either. I'll be checking in on you to make sure.
[He's glad it's settled, since he didn't really want to do laundry anyway.]
Do you, um, need a lift home?
no subject
[He's still not changed out of his soaked trousers and digs his socks out of his shoes, looking a little uncomfortable to sit in the small chair and put them on. It's weird going home so early.
The socks are knitted and have been patched a few times. It's clear he - dresses more than his budget. Wants to be respected and not look vulnerable. Then he realizes what might be implied and shrugs.]
If you want to give me a lift, I am unopposed.
no subject
I don't mind at all.
[When Sherlock is ready, John will walk with him outside to the car. It's not really his, it's a loan from the military. If he gets an urgent call, they don't want one of their top doctors sitting on the bus.]
no subject
Maybe that was why he liked the car.]
Loaner car..
[It's not that hard to tell. He's still - trying to impress and yet push his limits.] Last row of barracks.
no subject
[But John does manage to get them out of the parking lot and on their way.]
Do you have your own place or do you share it?
[It's not an odd thing to ask, is it?]
no subject
[He chuckles a little, staring at his hands in his lap.]
Are you not one for intimacy in front of others, Doctor? You do examine them all day, I don't see why it matters.
[He's either being bold or purposefully scandalous to make the attempt at friendship uncomfortable. He can't figure out why a doctor that just came down to the laundry on a whim decided he deserved care. He'd limp in exhausted some nights after everyone went to bed and no one cared then. He was clean at least, suppose he should be grateful for the distraction.
He doesn't really care about John's driving and ignore it.]
It's just at the very far end.
[The road is bumpy and uneven and he doesn't really care, he's more focused on examining his fingers than the conditions.]
no subject
[Why was he asking? He's not even sure. It just occurred to him to ask. Maybe it was improper of him.]
I just wanted to know if you'd be able to rest comfortably.
no subject
Yes of course. [Why does John care about his comfort? It's not like anyone else does. As long as he is not in a drug den or dying his brother does not care about his situation. The fact he had space should be a good thing. He ignores the fact he might be wrong about intimacy.
Why else would John care about someone's comfort.]
I am an employee, not a ward.
no subject
Or friends. If you want.
[John has a few friends, but having more wouldn't hurt.]
no subject
[Besides, it's not like he tries to be well-liked.]
no subject
[He feels sort of foolish for trying so hard. John isn't even sure why he's compelled to try with this man. Soon they're at the barracks and he pulls up.]
Well, goodnight. Don't forget to use those medicines.
no subject
Goodnight, John. I won't.
no subject
[He watches the man go inside. At least he knows Sherlock got home safely. Tomorrow, perhaps the man will enjoy ordering his new helpers around.]
no subject
They don't know why Laundry Boy needs a break though, really.
They complain and throw insults but Sherlock doesn't care. Or at least he acts like he doesn't care.
no subject
There a problem here?
No, sir!
no subject
You need different pins for those uniforms, you're using the sheet pins.
no subject
Yes, sir! [The orderlies get back to work, scrubbing much harder now.
John walks over to Sherlock.]
Let's see those hands.
no subject
They do feel better.
[They still hurt a little, not that Sherlock will say that. He's a proud person, proud he can take care of himself, that he doesn't need anyone, most of the time.]
no subject
Good job. Keep using the cream. And gloves, from now on, alright?
no subject
Would you rather there be stains on a few linens, the patients will complain.
[He's protesting, but the discomfort in his hands and the discomfort of not being able to work hadn't helped. However it's not... right of him to defy Doctor Watson if - everyone else is staring at his brashness.]
But if you ... say so.
no subject
[He's not asking for perfection. Even if Sherlock wears gloves, John is sure they'll be perfectly sanitary.]
Glad to hear it. Is there anything else you need down here?
