[Life in the army wasn't always easy. It didn't matter what rank you were or if you were just a grunt worker. The days were long, the work was strenuous, both physically and mentally at times. Because he knew that, John sometimes tried to help out, doing things a doctor of his rank wouldn't normally have to do.

After his shift in the medical unit, he volunteered to push the cart of linens down to the basement where the laundry was done. It was already late, so he didn't expect to hear the machines running or see anyone there.]

Hello?

[He walks around the machines, spotting the other man there. John was still dressed in a more casual form of the uniform with his white doctor's coat over it, but his shirt had already been unbuttoned showing the white T underneath. He had been eager to get home until this curiosity got the best of him.]
desecrated: (white shirt)

[personal profile] desecrated 2015-02-13 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
[The young man turns around, wearing a white button down that's half unbuttoned and very soaked trousers, and he's barefoot. He'd been hunched over and was treating a rather stubborn chemical stain. Most people would have left it or thrown the sheet away, but it's a challenge, and in otherwise boring work, he likes challenges.

The linens hanging up are between white and off-white, clear he works very hard to get the stains out. It's clear he's been using a great deal of lye already today to get things clean.

He gives the doctor a once over - looking him over, and then turning back to his work.
]

You're not new, however it's been a long day of surgery I should think even the residents have gone home. I'll take care of that additional - bloodstains are fairly easy as long as they're in cold water as soon as possible. Captain.

[He doesn't glance back but the stain seems to be giving a little, after several soaks and lemon juice. Diluted bleach works best in the entire load, not really directly on a stain unless one wants holes after a few washes. It's the lazy way out. From what is folded and what's hanging up he's been working nearly as long as John has, only less surgical and more laundry. Sherlock himself opposes this war, it's a land grab, but that didn't mean things shouldn't be clean, and he's proud of being good at it. ]

[personal profile] you_dont_work_alone 2015-02-13 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Good God. You're soaked. Where are your shoes?

[Yes, he states the obvious, but he's just really shocked by the man's appearance. He looks more like a slave than someone who works here. A person shouldn't be working under these conditions. Not in a British hospital, of all places.

The smell of cleaner and lemon is strong in the air, and as John steps closer, he notices some other things.]

Stop that. Your hands look scrubbed raw. [No doubt the cleaner is responsible for redness of his skin as well. And Sherlock's eyes look affected as well.]

Let me have a look at them.
desecrated: (push me down)

[personal profile] desecrated 2015-02-13 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
[He frowns a bit but extends his hands. No one else had been concerned about his appearance or condition, and - it's not like he could be an orderly, with his abrasive manner towards strangers. He was more suited to the laundry duty and he was away from combat and ensured to be away from 'the siren call of other habits' as he's too tired at the end of the day to seek it out from the locals. He's also too arrogant to be a doctor's assistant, and his brother wants him away from the fighting.]

My shoes are tucked near the basket of clean laundry.
[He points to illustrate.] It is more practical to go barefoot, as I get soaked anyway and my feet are fine. I cannot ruin my shoes. It's inconvenient to trade for another pair.

[He could trade something for another pair, but that is his other clothes, necessities. He is soaked because he does his job. It appears some of the linens have been washed by hand and then hung up to dry.His hands are scrubbed raw, but the laundry is clean.]

[personal profile] you_dont_work_alone 2015-02-13 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
[John takes Sherlock's hands gently, having a look at them and turning them over. They must ache, but Sherlock shows no signs of it. Doesn't he feel pain?]

I think you've done enough for today. I'll get you a prescription for your hands. Eyedrops, too.

[It's a shame. Sherlock's eyes are a pretty color. They shouldn't be tinged red from fumes like that. They'll calm down soon enough, he's sure. The hands might take a few days but won't improve if Sherlock just does this every day.]

Don't you have gloves you can use? You shouldn't stick your hands in the chemicals all day like that.
desecrated: (i'm a little broken)

[personal profile] desecrated 2015-02-13 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
[He usually isn't one to like being touched, but - the captain-doctor is fine, gentle, not - rushed. Calm. He winces a little as his hands are examined, but - tries very hard not to show it. It's better not to. He's just laundry boy, really? Eyedrops? Is he really irreplaceable?]

I wasn't paying attention. Using gloves, especially for this particular stain and the washboard doesn't give me the dexterity I need to get the job done correctly. It's why those are so white. Sir.

[Either way his hands are reddened at the end of the night. Does it matter?]

I am fine, Sir. Really.

[personal profile] you_dont_work_alone 2015-02-13 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sure everyone appreciates your dedication, but I'd rather not see you hurt yourself in the process.

[No person is irreplaceable. Not to John.]

Sit at that table there. I'll come back. Don't you dare leave.

[If Sherlock does, John will find out where he lives and pay a housecall if he has to. Hopefully, it won't come to that.]

And call me John, alright?
desecrated: (though inside)

[personal profile] desecrated 2015-02-13 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
[He sits at the table, but when John returns he'll be folding the dry laundry, smoothing the corners, efficiently, adding it to the pile of the baskets marked "CLEAN LINENS". Wet that is ready to dry is being hung up. He doesn't leave until the bulk of it is finished anyway. There is no point.]

John.
[He acknowledges when the man returns. As though he didn't expect the doctor to return. It didn't really matter if no one cared about his raw, chapped hands. He could look after himself, after all.]

It's really not necessary, the linens need to be done tomorrow - that is if you were thinking I should take a few days off, or do other duties.

[personal profile] you_dont_work_alone 2015-02-13 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
[At least his hands aren't in the water again when John comes back.]

That's exactly what I was thinking. If you're not going to, though, I'll do the linens myself. After I take care of those hands, of course. Bring them here.

[He takes a seat at the table again and opens a bag, pulling out some salve and eyedrops. The salve is opened and he dabs two fingers into it.]
desecrated: (fill me with poison)

[personal profile] desecrated 2015-02-13 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Y-you don't have to do them.
[He sits and offers his hands again, sheepishly.] Doctors don't do this sort of work. They need you. Upstairs.

[John is short and stocky, but stubborn, really. Stubborn about caring about him Which is unusual.]

Are you usually so caring about low-level employees?
Edited 2015-02-13 23:08 (UTC)

[personal profile] you_dont_work_alone 2015-02-13 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
[John reaches for one hand and holds it, then gently begins to rub the salve over the tender spots. It should have a nice, cooling effect, even if it smells like medicine.]

My shift is over. I can do what I want.

[He smiles, but then raises his brow at the last part.]

I don't see what your level has to do with it.

[He's a doctor. This is what he does.]
desecrated: (i'm yours)

[personal profile] desecrated 2015-02-13 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
[He shrugs, watching the salve ease it's way into raw, chapped skin.]

Because you intended to go home, you've had a long shift, you've never noticed me before, and people are usually selfish about their own lives, and their own hours.

Instead you're looking after me.
Now, of course you're a competent doctor, so you prefer busy days, though you care for the injured you prefer that they're more of them. You have a romantic life despite your shifts, though you are unwilling to commit to anyone.
[He shrugs. He's not well-liked for a reason.]

[personal profile] you_dont_work_alone 2015-02-13 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
[John does pause a moment when Sherlock says all that.]

Perceptive.

[He's not sure how he feels about being read so completely. Has this man asked around about him or something? He lets the hand go and reaches for the other hand to give it the same treatment.]

I didn't get your name.
desecrated: (i'm a little shy)

[personal profile] desecrated 2015-02-13 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Sherlock.

[He lets John take his other hand that is just as chapped and sore. He hadn't really paid attention.

John isn't angry. Normally people don't like being read. John didn't seem to mind. What a strange man.
]

[personal profile] you_dont_work_alone 2015-02-14 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
[John can tell Sherlock is a little different. He's dealt with some patients who have had mental issues, though he wouldn't call Sherlock mental. Just.. peculiar.]

It's nice to meet you, Sherlock.

[He lets go of the man's hand.]

Better?
desecrated: (loneliness)

[personal profile] desecrated 2015-02-14 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
[He touches his palm with his fingers, prodding a little.]

Yes, thank you.
Now if you'll please answer me who is doing the laundry in my absence, and I'm not fired am I? It cannot be you as you have a shift in the morning, and you cannot do shifts and the laundry. It will go or someone else will have to do it if I am not.

If you ask any of the orderlies to do it, they will ruin my system. It is efficient, the laundry gets done properly and they are sanitized and clean for anyone upstairs to use without fear of infection.

You're going to lose the use of your hands if you keep going as you are. Let them do the laundry for a few days.

[John gets up and wipes his hands off with a handkerchief in his pocket, then uncaps the eyedrops.]

Tilt your chin.

[He touches Sherlock's chin gently, to lift it up so the man stares up at him so he might administer the eyedrops.]
desecrated: (I swear I'll be good)

[personal profile] desecrated 2015-02-14 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
[He tilts his chin up, wincing at the drops. He'd been so caught up in his work he didn't really notice the damage being done. Retain his focus. He notices John's facial features. They're a bit appealing, he's soft edges, not hardened by some of the other surgeons.]

They will not be pleased, it won't be sanitized properly.
