On Your Doorstep

They ended up on your doorstep, quite literally. Bloody, possibly. Bruised, most definitely, though the wounds may be mental. You probably don't know them from Adam, yet you couldn't find it in you to turn them away - whether they wanted you to or not. So you opened up your home, just for a little while.

But it's getting to be more than a little while. Both of you are finding a comfort zone, because you didn't simply open up your home. Admit it or don't, but you've opened up your heart all the same.

Their's is slowly following, if its reluctant at all.

Yeah, I kind of figure he... slice up watermelon?

[Well so much for him picturing a little brother half her age. A kid like that probably wouldn't be any good slicing watermelon. Now he's just picturing some crazy swordsman with a topknot and samurai robes. ~~Which wasn't that far off.~~

He was starting to pick up the scent more but... there was another scent mingled with it that was... peculiar to him.]

Err... is your kitchen in the basement or something?

[Basements... dungeons... same thing, right?]

Yes. He trained deep in the mountains to achieve that craft.

[If Tatewaki could have a top knot, he probably would have. How he dreamed of becoming something like the famous Miyamoto Musashi.]

In the dungeons, actually.

[She looked at him, surprise written on her face.]

How did you know that?

Wow, it's been a while since I've seen an estate with its own dungeon kitchen.

[Not since he was in Phantom, but really that whole guildhall was like a dungeon.]

I have a strong sense of smell, I'm what you might call a dragon slayer, and I've learned a lot of dragon techniques that go with it.

[Another one of those whack forms of ~~magic~~ martial arts!]

You have any stairs around here?

It makes it easy to contain any accidental fires.

[Which was a common thing in the Kuno household, quite sadly, as trigger happy as they were.]

Dragon slayer? Why would you want to slay dragons? I'd love to have a pet dragon.

The stairs are straight ahead, then to the left.

You guys must throw some wild ass parties.

[Even Fairy Tail didn't tend to burn the house down... probably thanks to the master keeping things under control... but still.]

Don't let the name confuse you, I learned it from a dragon. I can also tell you they make terrible pets... actually I think I was his pet in all honestly.

[He still thought of that bastard as his dad but... you know.]

Thanks, I doubt there'll be any fires today though. I doubt I'll be doing any actual cooking.

I don't think we've ever thrown one.

[Not that she could remember, at the very least. She wondered what that said about her and her brother.]

I'd like to meet one. [Trust Kodachi to be fascinated with all things frightening and fanged.]

[The stairs came in view, and Kodachi descended into the dungeon, flipping on the lights. It wasn't as scary as dungeons could get, but it wasn't exactly your typical homey and cozy kitchen either.]

... Oh. Maybe you should consider a holiday party sometime, you probably have the space for it and you might get popular with that guy you're trying to make jealous.

[He chuckled as he followed her down the stairs. In all honesty, her dungeon likely wouldn't phase him unless there was someone screaming on a rack nearby. If there was someone there who wasn't screaming he might not even entirely notice, because she'd saved his life, and he'd seen worse.]

I wish I could meet one again too... but most of them are gone.

I suppose so.

[She could invite her martial arts team, and her brother could invite his kendo team. She'd never thought of that before, and that might indeed just tempt Ranma to come and visit her, especially if he heard about the delicious food.]

I have an alligator. He's not a dragon, but I think he could be one if he wanted to be.

[Don't even ask how that worked, Gajeel.]

[If Ranma was screaming in her dungeon, then she wouldn't have to ask him for help with the date . . .]

[She sat on a stool and watched him idly.]

Err... well...

[Actually... if her alligator learned dragonslayer magic and... yeah this was a weird train of thought.]

You know what? He probably could.

[He hopped over the counter to the refrigerator to begin taking a look at what they had inside. Not too bad really, he's just gonna grab a few things for sandwiches]

You want anything?

[How odd to be offered food in her own home. Kodachi tilted her head to one side, thinking that over. No one had ever cooked or made anything for her. Ever. Restaurants didn't count.]

[So she nodded.]

I'll have whatever you're having.

Alright, but don't blame me if it ain't fancy enough for ya.

[He did generally eat scrap metal from a junkyard when he was on his own, and that stuff could taste pretty god awful. So sometimes people said his sense of taste was garbage too, but he totally surprised people with how decent he could make things.

He didn't even bother asking where the knives was, because his own body could turn into knives if he wanted, though his back was turned to her so she wouldn't see how he cut the meats and cheeses up so neatly. He made three sandwiches, two jumbo sized ones, and one a little bit smaller, and two peeled apples to go with it.]

Alright, I got three sandwiches here, one for me, one for you, and one for your brother so that you can choose what size you wanted. If you want the bigger one he'll be none the wiser that there was ever a size discrepancy, and if you want the smaller one I'm sure he'll appreciate it just as much if he wants it. Otherwise you've got one for later.

[Kodachi didn't even ask how he cut things so precisely. She just assumed that he had weapons hidden on his person like she did. It was just how martial artists lived their lives and that was perfectly fine by her. Besides, she was more than capable of defending herself, especially in her own home.]

[She looked at all the sandwiches, surprised that he'd been so thoughtful.]

Oh! How nice of you! I'll have the bigger one.

[She did come from practice and had to make up for that caloric deficit, after all. Her brother could deal with the other things in the fridge.]

You're not bad, Mr. Gajeel.

[Gajeel couldn't help but grin in a bit of respect that she took the bigger one, because he was definitely of the opinion that her brother could make do with the 'you snooze you lose', of not getting the bigger sandwich. Besides, she looked pretty athletic to him, and most of the one's that looked as built as she was could use a hearty meal.]

You're not so bad yourself Black Rose. I know a few people who would have just let me wonder off somewhere to die instead of insisting I get patched up.

[He chuckled taking a bite into his apple that practically took out half a chunk of the thing.]

Besides, it's your food anyways, this doesn't even put a dent in my IOU to ya.

[Sure he was going on that date for her, but how bad could that really be? ~~Famous last words.~~]

[She was a growing, athletic girl, and she definitely needed those calories! Besides, she wasn't worried about her weight, what with how active she was.]

[She took the sandwich from him and inspected it. It passed her test.]

I couldn't let you become a ghost, like I said.

[It was a valid concern, okay.]

[Kodachi began to eat, realizing how hungry she was after a long day at school and after school practice. Being a team captain was tough.]

[Gajeel had seen very few people as active as he was get fat, namely because if you ate too much you couldn't be as active without agony, so you started to instinctively know what your body needed for how much activity you did. At least that was his theory.

He'd mixed a few odds and ends he found, some decent cheese, some grilled chicken, he tried a few sauces in jars to find out which one he thought might be best for a light marinade, lettuce, tomato, a few diced onion pieces for flavor enhancement. Nothing super fancy in his book, but since she had some of the stuff available he figured he'd take a little bit from here and there.]

So what's your story Kodachi? You seem like the kind of girl who could have a dozen different guys fawning over you on a daily basis with looks like yours, and a place like this. What's so special about the guy you're looking after? Good martial arts skills, or something a bit deeper like he saved your life and introduced you to your alligator?

[Yeah, he couldn't help but be a bit curious since he was supposed to help her.]

[Kodachi appreciated the effort he made into creating the sandwich. For a girl who seemed to have such refined tastes - and she did - Kodachi also appreciated the value of the simple things, like good home cooking or a well-made sandwich.]

[She finished chewing before she replied.]

He saved me from falling off a rooftop, yes.

[It was his fault she fell off in the first place, but she didn't know that.]

He's also handsome, of course, and kind . . . and a very good martial artist.

Well I'll be a son of a... I guess two out of three ain't bad!

[Okay so he didn't introduce her to her alligator, but good martial arts and life saving were on her list of pros, so he'd guessed that right at least.]

I'm almost looking forward to seeing this guy just to see if he's everything he's cracked up to be. He probably got a few faults on him if he's got a resume like that going for him, but I'd probably hate the guy's guts if he was just that perfect. Let me guess... he hates most women, he's a real loner type, takes his work too seriously... and doesn't notice you as a result?

[That's how most martial artists were, right?]

[Kodachi thought about it, her expression growing somewhat sour when she in turn thought about the three other fiancees.]

He doesn't hate women, I think, but he's quite awkward when it comes to romance. [She left out the part about Akane because even if she knew Ranma liked that girl, Kodachi wasn't discounting her chances just yet.] He's quite sociable . . . and he likes practicing his martial arts to be better, but also to be better than other people. [That made her crack a smile.]

Well I can't get them all right 100% of the time I guess.

[Or even all that close to being right on the second account, but what he doesn't know won't hurt him in this case.]

Sounds to me like he might have a bit of an ego with skills like that, it definitely sounds like it might be fun to try to give him a challenge.

[Though unless he mastered a form of martial arts that let him punch through solid steel and withstand hurricanes of shrapnel, he'd have a hard time against Gajeel not holding back.]

So you think he'll make a move if he sees us together? Or do you think we might need to do a bit more to grab is attention?

[Kodachi couldn't help her smirk. Yes, Ranma did have an ego, and she knew it - and was more than willing to use it for her own purposes.]

[Ryoga could punch through walls of steel, but Ranma would have some work cut out ahead of him.]

We'll simply have to see. I shall plan this meticulously, of course.

[Her traps were intricate and convoluted - hopefully Gajeel got out of them safely . . .]

[He lifted up a glass of ~~Hawaiian~~ punch he poured a couple glasses of as a toast.]

With any luck your guy won't know what hit him.

[Gajeel literally ate bear traps for breakfast, so he wasn't exactly worried about getting out of this less damaged than he came into it. Of course, he had no way of knowing just what kind of sticky web like traps the suitors of Ranma Soatome could weave.]

[Kodachi lifted up her own glass, smiling graciously as though she'd already won an award. Only the determined and devious gleam in her eye betrayed her nefarious plans.]
