the ACCIDENTAL EXTRADIMENSIONAL TOURIST meme

the ACCIDENTAL EXTRADIMENSIONAL TOURIST meme

This meme was inspired by those who wanted more memes in which posters are required to make a start up post.

Have you ever wanted to travel to another planet? Another REALITY? Even if this is something that has never crossed your mind, It's about to happen. For reals. A giant wormhole has opened up beneath you and dropped you elsewhere. You have no choice in what world you're heading to, or even where you'll be landing. Luckily (or unluckily) you'll be dropped near to a resident of the world who will have no choice but to play your tour guide and help you get to know your new home.

How it works

1. Post with your character.  In the body include a little bit about where your character is, and what they are currently doing.  You can write as little, or as much as you want! Just a simple sentence saying something like [John Doe is sitting in his office at the paper company goofing off and playing call of duty while his boss isn't looking.] is fine, or you could go into more detail and write a paragraph or two describing a key place in your world's canon to really set the scene for incoming tourists.

Do not leave your initial comment blank! Set up a scene, no matter how short.

This text in in bolded bright red so if you leave a blank comment everyone will quietly giggle at you behind you back since you didn't read the instructions.

2. Find someone else who's world you are invading and post dropping in on them.  Maybe you just opened a door and found yourself there, maybe you fell into a worm hole.  Either way you are not where you were a moment ago.

optional:
The wormhole might have handily provided you with the means to blend in to your new environment.  If you find yourself hopping out into a school, you might be wearing an appropriate uniform, if you happen to fall out into a swords and sorcery type world you might find yourself sporting plate armor or wizard robes, and if you find yourself on an alien planet... well you might look just like the aliens who live there.

3. Remember that with this sort of meme it's probably best to tag outside of canonmates.  But, either way, have fun and try not to kill the tourists!

How does one usually go about fending them off if typical forms of attack are as useless as you imply?

It used to be the D.S.S.S *Pronounced D-triple-S.* system, which would help target the part of the Gnosis that had come into Real Space to attack. The Hilbert Effect is more useful, though, and the Realians who generate it are at least common enough that it's getting to be a practical option. The Hilbert Effect actually drags the Gnosis entirely into Real Space so you can fight them normally.

*Was anyone paying enough attention to notice when the sulking brat stopped sulking and started listening in?*

But with fast space travel sunk, it's gonna be pretty damn hard to get them where they're needed. We're lucky as hell most of the Gnosis are gone.

[Well, Edgeworth understood better than half of what Allen said, at least...]

What exactly is this "Hilbert Effect"?

[As for Jr.'s comment:]

Indeed, it seems as though you've exchanged one crisis for another.

Pretty much, yeah.

*And now he'll just be watching to see how Allen explains this.*

The Hilbert Effect is kind of like an energy pulse through Imaginary Space. It interferes with D.S.S.S sensors, but it also chases Gnosis into the physical world. That's all I really know, though. The man who came up with the theory is dead, so nobody actually knows why it works.

[Edgeworth simply nods slowly.]

(As strange as the phenomena here might be, if nothing else they seem to be better-understood than the equally strange ones in Prospero's world. Perhaps if all of humanity in that world were capable of the awareness kidnappees have, science might have come to a limited understanding of such things there long before our arrival.)

But anyway, that doesn't have anything to do with what's interesting about this. That dot is something similar to a UMN transfer column. The readout is a little different, though, and transfer columns don't exist anymore.

[Edgeworth blinks out of his reverie and looks to Allen.]

Do you have any idea how that could be possible?
want_a_vacation: (Thinking)

[personal profile] want_a_vacation 2012-05-27 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
My best guess is that that's how you got here. It's probably either some sort of spacetime anomaly or something from Prospero's end of things.
truthsnomiracle: Edgeworth crosses his arms and taps his finger on one of them. (Attempting patience)

[personal profile] truthsnomiracle 2012-05-27 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Given what little you've already explained, I thought it was most likely responsible for my presence here as well.

Can you determine how stable it is? If we have the time to spare, perhaps something of value could be learned by investigating it.

*He hits a few holographic buttons and the readout for not-a-column gets more in depth.*

It's definitely not a permanent transfer column, but the readings are holding stable, at least for now.
truthsnomiracle: Edgeworth points and occasionally waves his finger as he talks. (Making my case)

[personal profile] truthsnomiracle 2012-05-27 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Should its stability falter, would it vanish immediately, or would there be time to react?
want_a_vacation: (Thinking)

[personal profile] want_a_vacation 2012-05-27 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Assuming it mostly behaves like a transfer column, it should fade instead of just disappearing.

Then perhaps we have time to investigate it rather than blindly rushing into a departure.

[Edgeworth examines the screen further, trying to get a sense of just where this "column" is.]

*It's back out in the spaceport, not exactly where he arrived, but fairly close.*

Alright. Captain Matthews can be a bit impatient, but Jr. should be able to convince him to stay docked for a while even after everyone gets back.
reconciledtwins: (Rubedo-Yeah right.)

[personal profile] reconciledtwins 2012-05-31 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
With how much he still owes? Hell, I could convince him to taxi us all over the damn planet if I needed to.
truthsnomiracle: (Small frown)

(It's probably best not to pry into their personal affairs...)

Would it be best to continue to scan from here, or to investigate on-site? I have no idea what sorts of tools you have available.
