[ It should've been just another early morning run. And it was, until she'd gotten her foot caught in a root while jogging through a park. That's what she gets for straying from the footpath, she supposes. The park isn't too far from her apartment or the office, so she tries to walk on her own. Athena gets a few steps before the pain is too much for her to go any farther.

Since she can't get anywhere under her own power right now, she's forced to call the office. At least she'd had the foresight to bring her phone. Athena listens to the phone ring, hoping someone is around at this crazy hour. ]

[ as far as thane is concerned, shepard is a master of a great many things, including leading a well-balanced team whenever needed. even for something as simple as retrieving something from an abandoned cerberus base has obviously inspired thought from the commander. tali to make sure no locked doors stood in their way, thane to be continually aware of the ever-changing situation around them. and knowing shepard's own skills with a sniper rifle, it was always a little humbling for him to have her motion for him to hang back, have the honour of covering her back. he would never refer to his own skills as dull, but they still feel sharper when he can see her armour through his scope.

except for when she's being blown up by self-destructing mechs. that's mostly just new and alarming. a quick shot from him causes one of them to detonate before it can get close enough to the two ahead of him to do any damage and tali's quick thinking seems to stall the rest, but the first explosion was a surprise and shepard hasn't moved yet, so thane vaults his cover and moves over to crouch at the commander's side, rifle still in hand, while tali busies herself cursing the kamikaze-coded machines. ]

Shepard. [ the drell is too calm, too ever-peaceful to have much in the way of concern in his voice, but it laces the edges anyway. he suspects head trauma from how she hit the facility's hard floor and while he believes shepard to be almost unreasonably resilient, he has a lot of faith in her ability to be fine if given a few seconds to shake it off. it's what he's counting on, at least. ]

[ It's a political play, of course, to have the Hammonds visiting New York so soon after aliens attacked it. They're there to help boost morale and poll numbers, shake a few hands, donate to the recovery and rebuilding efforts. There's no harm in it, really. All the help they can get at this rate, right? But since the place was teeming with other worldly threats not too long ago, SHIELD doesn't want to take any chances with especially important visitors. (It's no secret among the secret organisation what Elaine Barrish is planning.) Peggy Carter, a decorated agent in her own right who doesn't have a seedy or assassin-like history in her record, is assigned as temporary security detail to the family. Ordinarily, she would be attached to the soon-to-be presidential candidate, but seeing as she's tied up with Fury himself, Peggy figures the woman is as safe as can be.

That leaves the less politically inclined son, TJ. The event is at the Waldorf and she caught him slipping out of the ballroom so she followed. It wouldn't do to just go skipping merrily down Park Avenue when midtown east is precisely where the brunt of the fighting happened (Stark Tower, sorely damaged, rises just above them on the sidewalk). It means the area is still full of rubble and boarded-up businesses with clean up still underway. It means it isn't as populated as it would be, with all traffic going through and by Grand Central diverted. It means it's become a prime place for tourists to snap photos of the battleground of the Avengers and it means it's become a prime place for people to mug those tourists. The surveillance is poor, but first responders are spread thin throughout the city with the casualties sustained and they can only spare so many officers to patrol the area at night. Peggy doubts TJ knows this, which is why she keeps fast on his heels, her own silent on the sidewalk, blending into the shadows with her black dress and dark hair.

Ideally, no one would know she's there at all. But between her and TJ, she makes the better target at face value. A slight, well-dressed (seemingly) young woman out alone at night? It's three men. Not a problem for her but the moment TJ turns at the scuffle and realises it's her, she immediately switches gears to protecting him rather than herself. The fight is short and brutal; it ends with three unconscious chaps handcuffed to a street lamp, a call dispatched to the police, and an ankle Peggy can't put her weight on. ]

All right, Mr Hammond. [ Her tone is brusque and at odds with the way she limps over in her heels. She shakes out her hand, tingling from thrown punches, then grabs onto TJ's jacket sleeve. ] I'm taking you back to your room.

But when he saw some kind of futuristic ship fall out of the sky and crash in the distance he knew it couldn't have been a good thing. He hurried down into the valley and through the thick forest toward the crash site. If anyone survived, they'd need help. If they didn't... he could at least lay the bodies to rest.

( Claire never walked this way normally. Maybe later she'd regret it now, even though it was likely just a fluke that it had happened. She hadn't seen anything until she felt it, the bump coming from behind. It wasn't the strongest of pushes but it was strong and surprising enough that it knocked Claire off balance, the man in question running along still without stopping.

It took her a brief moment to realise what had happened, pulling herself back from the surprise as she offered a look down the street, eyes following the man for a few seconds. She hadn't bumped the floor very hard, her own weight helping there, but she'd not fallen well.

Claire feels the first touch of pain as she moves to aim to stand up, stopping at the sensation. Instead she moves a hand to her ankle wanting to see if there was any real damage before taking that attempt at standing )
