[a very heavy sigh sounds from the bottom bunk at that message.]

you're not helping.

[There's a completely unrepentant and sleep roughened chuckle.]

Pick up lines never work, idiot.

it doesn't have to work. i just need something to open with that isn't "hi, i'm rin." they already know who i am.

[strongforyou]

[There's the sound of Sousuke turning on his side and he doesn't reply for a few seconds despite the glow of his phone showing he's at least looking at it.]

Tell me who it is first.

[honing]

[there's a pause while rin stares up at the bottom bunk from underneath it.]

i can't.

[strongforyou]

Why not?

[He's not going to sulk about that or anything.]

[honing]

[the pause here is longer before rin finally resigns himself.]

There's a barely audible hitch in his breathing before the reply comes.]

Maybe you should skip the pick up line.

[some shuffling can be heard from below as rin tugs his pillow over his face.]

[Another chuckle drifts down, this one a little quieter, a little more pleased.]

There might be if you pick a really good one.

[he only pulls the pillow away to check the message, glancing up again as he hears the chuckle.]

i was coming to you for that, remember?

[there's a pause before another message follows.]

i love my bed, but i'd rather be in yours.

[rin shifts from his spot, sitting up and turning to swing his legs over the side of the bed. his pillow ends up in his lap as he rests his elbows against it, both hands on his phone as he taps out another message.]

it was either say something now or never say anything at all, i guess. i didn't like the second option.

[Sousuke hears Rin moving below and runs his thumb over the side of his phone. It's easier to stay put. To send another text and pretend his heart isn't trying to race out of his chest while he waits for Rin to make the next move.

But Rin already made the first one and it's not like Sousuke to simply go with the flow.

He rolls over, bed head poking over the side of the bunk, a lazy grin only visible from the glow of his phone.]

Like I'd have let that happen.

[honing]

[The sound of Sousuke's voice has Rin lifting his head, looking up at him as his eyes widen a little. They've been in the same room from the start, but it somehow feels completely different to actually speak to one another instead of relying on texts.

His cheeks warm up again as he puts his phone aside and pushes himself up, turning to face their beds.]

You would've said something before graduation?

[The question comes with his movement toward the ladder, making his intention to follow through on his earlier line clear.]

[It hadn't been a question of if, but when. With everything that had been happening and Rin finding out about his shoulder, the timing hadn't felt right, but Sousuke had known he couldn't just leave things like that.

He just hadn't expected Rin to...]

Yeah... I would have.

[When Rin moves towards the ladder it makes his stomach drop in the best possible way. Sousuke shifts towards the wall to make room, but only just enough.

The screen of his phone goes to sleep and suddenly the room is a lot darker. Maybe that's a good thing, because Sousuke can feel heat begin to crawl up his neck.]

I just needed to figure out how.
