I don't do boys, good or bad. I came to my senses a long time ago and prefer men. Now if that man has some attitude and has seen the world, all the better.

Yeah, sorry, it shows. Don't feel bad, the guys I work with wear it sometimes, too. (Her expression changes, very briefly, and for a moment she gets that same far away look.) They deny it, of course.

You work with CIA operatives? Or military?

[(Anonymous)]

Not often, but I have. (She smiles almost apologetically.) I'm on the domestic side. FBI.

[hamtyler]

The FBI can take over your life just as easily as the CIA or military.

[His gaze becomes stern.]

Don't let it.

[(Anonymous)]

(Her expression softens a little with regret, but there's still some pride there.) Pretty sure it's too late for that. But my team is good, really good, so that helps. And we help people.

No, really. I work with the BAU.

Yeah. I was good at what I did too. I still am.

[He looks away, but keeps his expression neutral.]

As long as you can ask yourself "Is this worth the sacrifice?" and say yes, you're okay. And be honest with yourself.

(She steps out of the shadow so he can see her, too. That's because she's not buying that neutral look for a second.) I do. You have to or you're dangerous not just to yourself but your team. I can do stupid stuff if it's just me, but them? No.

So...is it still worth it?

It wasn't worth it then, but I didn't see that until it was too late. It's only worth it now, because I've got nothing to lose.

[His jaw muscles tighten. This isn't a road he wants to go down.]

(She thinks she can see him coming up on that wall, the one he just won't cross with a stranger, and backs off some.) Nothing at all? I doubt that's true.

I mean, I could be wrong, but we usually have more than we think.

Got a partner. The guy's been with me through the worst and still keeps on going.

[He smiles slightly at the thought of Farber. It's subtle, but a definite change in demeanor. Privately, he's thankful she didn't push, and in a way the smile is for that too.]

He's like a brother.

Now, see, that's what I mean. If I didn't have my team, things would be different. Like your guy, they're family. Not quite sure when I got all the extra brothers and sisters...and two dads, but I've got them.

[That smile widens.]

That's a lot of extra family to keep track of.

Don't I know it. The 'brothers' are the pesky ones. Always thinking they can tell me what to do. But I love them all. And even better, I like them.

Brothers can be like that, especially if they're trying to protect their sisters.

[intrigues_girl]

Just they don't walk in front of bullets for me, it's okay. They keep trying that.

And I'm a better shot than some of them!

It is possible they underestimate you. Men tend to do that with women.

If they're that stubborn there's probably not much you can do about it.

[intrigues_girl]

Oh, I'm easily as stubborn as they are. She shrugs. More. And I'm lucky, after a very short time they cut that nonsense out. It helps they aren't all Alpha males. Just most of them. And then we are Alpha females...

It's just that they care.

They should. If I had a sister I'd take a bullet for her.

But I'd know when to let her do things her own way, even if I didn't want to let her.

[intrigues_girl]

(She laughs softly.) I'm starting to think you aren't quite real.

Why's that?

[intrigues_girl]

Well, keeping in mind how long I've known you, you're just a mess of contradictions. Ex-Military? Definitely intelligence. I'd know that look anywhere.

But you are way more...thoughtful that I've encountered in your...colleagues.
