But I'd know when to let her do things her own way, even if I didn't want to let her.

Well, keeping in mind how long I've known you, you're just a mess of contradictions. Ex-Military? Definitely intelligence. I'd know that look anywhere.

But you are way more...thoughtful that I've encountered in your...colleagues.

I've had a lot of life experience beyond government work.

[intrigues_girl]

(She gives him a look that says clearly she isn't the least bit surprised by that. Not even a little bit.) Life has a way of doing that to us when we're in the trenches, doesn't it? Better us than someone without some skills to deal with it.

I'd always rather it be me than someone who can't handle it.

[intrigues_girl]

And that's why our type tend to burn out so often. Or blow up.

I haven't burned out yet, but I've seen it enough times. It's not pretty.

No it is not. Woman on my team before me... She, well, she murdered a suspect. Or so they say. I'm not sure even my whole team believes it. Not long after our team lead just...walked out. Left a note and walked away.

At least when I left it was to protect my team. And I went back.

When I left the CIA my partner left with me, and that was all I cared about. I didn't leave because of burnout either.

Good for you. That's rare. How did you know it was time?

[hamtyler]

They screwed me.

[intrigues_girl]

Oh...

Yeah, that'll do it. Hate when that happens. They still want you or are you clear?

I left officially. We're done. I don't want anything to do with them, and as far as I know they don't care where I am or what I'm doing.

[intrigues_girl]

Right up until they think you know something or someone that they can use, then look out.

(She laughs weakly.) Sorry, my mom's in politics. I know how things work.

[hamtyler]

Heh, well... [He grins, but it's not at all friendly.] Good luck to them. I know all their tricks, and I can disappear if I want to.

[intrigues_girl]

(She's not frightened of that smile, but she does respect it. She smiles back slightly.) So what's a guy with... your skill set find to do after you leave? I've often wondered what I'll do and I haven't come up with any good ideas.

Nothing personal, but it's probably not a good idea to tell the FBI what I'm doing these days.

[intrigues_girl]

Oh, no problem. You're right, I might have to do something if I knew. Pesky ethics get in the way sometimes when you meet interesting people.

If you ever do get burned out I'm sure I could find something for you.

(She didn't expect that, but she only let it show a tiny bit.) That's a fascinating offer.

(She shook his hand firmly, solidly, without any macho bullshit.) Emily Prentiss. I'm with the Behavioral Analysis Unit.

(He doubted he'd have much trouble finding her again if he wanted, but no reason to make it harder.)

[He couldn't help smiling again. She had a good handshake. Not meek like some women, but not trying too hard either.]
