[ That ought to have done it. Gotten his point across. Mycroft takes a step back, satisfied, but lifts his chin. He won't relax entirely yet. ]

Stay away from Sherlock. Or tell him it's over, even, and he won't wonder. Let him off the hook, one way or another. For all our sakes.

[ John holds his gaze for a moment, holds it firmly, because what Mycroft says sits oddly in the place between infuriating and humbling, like it turns from an order to advice to a plea without ever changing in tone. John's stubborn. perhaps dangerously so. he needs not to be humbled until he's far enough away to think for himself.
