We've all seen it in fiction or witnessed it in real life - or been a part of it. A pair that's so attracted to each other ( or maybe clearly in love with each other) that it nearly creates a presence of its own. But, as of yet, they've not acted on this. They're dancing around the issue, one or both of them is ignorant despite EVERYONE ELSE knowing, or they're just the type to ignore all that guff. It's awkward, though, for everyone involved. And eventually...
Your character and whoever responds to you have had this sort of tension building up between you for a while now. Handwaved interaction and assumed CR are key here! It doesn't have to be your typical romcom or tsundere arguing couple. Cute little crushes, secret longings, and serious feelings all welcome. It can even be sexual tension rather than purely romantic. The characters have yet to explore anything - now, though, they have no choice since it's right there, unable to be avoided.

It seemed a perfectly valid question to him. It wasn't as if he hadn't heard of similar situations where one person involved had found they couldn't work with the other anymore and demanded a transfer. He didn't want that to happen to them. He didn't want to loose her.
At least her response let's him know that isn't something he has to worry about. But she wants his justification for saying no, so she can have it.
"Yeah, 'they' do... and maybe if Del Rio were still Captain or this wasn't Infinity then, then maybe we could too. But this is Infinity and you know ONI has us under a microscope."
As much as he wanted to share her ODST 'live in the moment' philosophy he didn't have that luxury. He has to think several moves in advance, what consequences he has to expect and how to deal with them.
"After what happened with Halsey, I have no doubt that Osman would be more than happy to find something to use against either of us. For me, I loose my commission... face some trumped up charges, that's fine. I can find a way to move on if I have to. But you... Sarah, you're a Spartan. You can't just retire and how does that look for the Spartan program?"
He doesn't imagine ONI wouldn't take the chance to renege on the Spartan's independence if giving a chance.
How could she even begin to argue against that extremely logical and thought out argument? Everything he said was completely correct and true. It was obvious that Tom had been arguing the very point himself for a while and Sarah didn't know how to process that revelation.
She wanted to argue that if Serin Osman decided to destroy them, she would. And she wouldn't need a reason because she could just make one up.
But what was the point? He'd made his stance crystal clear and what's worse...she couldn't argue with it because it was the wiser option.
"They're not going to force you to resign or shelve me because of something like that, Tom." No, at worse, they'd separate them and probably assign her to a new post. "But I'm not going to argue with you." She just needed to retreat now and figure out her own chaotic emotional state. Without another word, Palmer beat a hasty retreat before she said or did something equally as stupid as what she'd just done.
Separating them would be just as bad. If one or both of them were reassigned... he knew he'd never see her again. This way at least they could safely serve together.
That thought wasn't much comfort to him as the door closed behind her. He'd just turned away the person who meant the most to him and he felt miserable for it.
It will be a long time yet before Tom can fall asleep and the pebble smooth piece of armor slips from his fingers.
