Grooming is an important part of many species' rituals. It keeps them clean, healthy, and content. And a good bath? It can change the whole tone of a day from terrible to relaxed and blissful. But nudity is sometimes viewed as a weakness - and it is almost always sexualized - so bathing is often kept a private matter. If you do share these moments with someone, they're almost always a significant other or a sexual partner. Like you're doing now. Whether it be after a battle or after sex (or before sex, even), the two of you are going to get clean. Be sure to help each other out with that, won't you? After all, there are places on the back that just can't be reached... The Doctor bopped her nose before standing up from the floor, "No, but I'll meet you back in our room when you're done."

"Alright," she smiled, slowly turning back to her bath. She scooped water up onto her arms, then quickly called out after him. Don't forget to move those thermocouplings!"

"Yes, Dear!" He called back over his shoulder at his wife. In fact, that was the first thing he did once back in their room, moved the theromcouplings into the console room.

River smiled to herself at his response. What was it about the way he called her "dear" that made her perfectly content to fall under the heading of old married woman? Well, not completely anyway - a brood of children running around a house with a fence was never going to happen. And she was quite fine to go with that. That was boring. And besides, between her job and a husband who sometimes needed as much supervision as a child, her attention was taken.

Nearly twenty minutes later, River finally returned to the bedroom. She was towel-drying her hair, her freshly-bathed figure clad in a lavender dressing robe with a firm knot tied at the waist.

"I just love the sight of a thermocoupling free bed!"

He was 'Sweetie' it only made sense that she was 'Dear'. The Doctor loved that he could call her that, positive that if anyone else tried, they'd meet the business end of her blaster.

The Doctor had already taken off his waistcoat and his boots leaving him without so many layers, when River came into their room.

"If I thought they'd be in here, I would have gotten rid of them hours ago."

He was absolutely the only one allowed to call her that. Well, any affectionate nickname really, so long as it wasn't Mrs. Robinson.

"I thought you would've popped in at some point and found them," River shrugged. "Or at the very least have realized they weren't where you last left them. But no matter, they're gone now."

She put her towel over her shoulder and smiled coyly. "Which means we have a very unoccupied bed. Whatever shall we do with it?"

The Doctor thought that was very funny back then. Still did, if he were asked about it.

"You usually have the better ideas when it comes to things like that."

River chuckled and stepped closer to her husband, fluffing her hair.

"True, but every once in a while you have a stroke of bedroom genius. Remember the pillow fort?"

"That was a night to remember, wasn't it?"

And at first, he was surprised that she played along. But it worked out, very well, for both of them, in the end.

"It certainly was," she agreed, slipping her arms around his neck. "After all, it was practically my first time." The pillow fort, not the other bit. Ones made with Amy and Rory during her second childhood didn't count - they usually devolved into pillow fights, anyway.

River leaned up to steal a quick kiss from the Doctor's lips. "Although if we're being honest, all my nights with you are memorable."

He laughed, glad she enjoyed it. Maybe someday they'd have to repeat it.

The Doctor's arms went around her waist, as he decided he was having none of this quick kiss stuff, and kissed her properly.

"You're flattering me, Dear."

She certainly wasn't about to complain about a proper kiss from her husband. What woman in her right mind would?

"'Course I am," she murmured smugly. "I'm seducing you."

The Doctor was sure that River knew that all she had to do was look at him a certain way and he'd be seduced.

"I think, 'Hello, Sweetie' accomplishes seducing me."

"I know, but I still like to put a little work into it, sweetie." River gently guided him towards the bed. "It helps get me in the mood."

If this was a little work, a lot of work on River's part must be impressive. Though he was surprised that she wasn't always in the mood from the amount of flirting they've done over the years.

The Doctor tried to sit on their bed as gracefully as he could manage, which was only slightly less flaily than normal.

She just might be, Doctor - she was still very human, after all. But River knew there were more important things in the universe than the pleasure between entwining bodies of lovers. It was why she savored their private moments together, when they didn't have to run from an invading threat or dismantle a bomb.

She smiled as he sat upon their bed, fingers stroking his hair. She stood in front of him, eyes full of warmth and fondness; she tossed aside the towel hanging on her shoulder, and bent her head down to kiss him tenderly.

The Doctor leaned into her touch before she leaned down to kiss him. Quiet little moments like these were so rare for the two of them. They were always The Doctor and River Song, running through the galaxy.

He did love being husband and wife, and those little bits of familiarity that came with it. Even if it was just the way she was looking at him right now. His own look back at her was full of love, and still a bit of wonder after all these years.

He returned her kiss, trying to let her know just how much he loved her, since it was something he never said.

Gently, refusing to part from his kiss, River lifted each of her knees in order to climb onto the bed, straddling her husband's lap.

Her husband. How silly a single word could mean so much.

She'd never thought much of weddings or marriage. Those were for normal, well-adjusted people. And those were two qualities she'd never embodied. Not until him. He gave her a second chance at life, to actually choose her life and how she wanted to live it. She loved him for that. She loved him for a great many reasons, not all of which she could name.

And she knew he loved her. How deep it ran, she could only surmise from his actions. He was sometimes painfully tight-lipped on the topic, and it was one of the few with him she dared not broach. River knew she wasn't the first woman in his long life, and she probably wasn't his soulmate, but she didn't care. She loved a good man and had his love in return. She couldn't ask for much more.

Well, except for perhaps getting that pesky shirt of his off, but her own hands would take care of that soon enough.

In truth, The Doctor never expected to be married again. Not after Gallifrey, and losing his family the first time. But River was different and she was the only one who would make him rethink that decision.

He would disagree with River's thought about being his soulmate. He thought that maybe, just maybe, theirs was a relationship that could survive any change of face.

The Doctor managed to undo his bow tie and shrug off his braces before dropping his lips to her neck.

She would always be a teensy bit partial to this face - it's peered at her from her dreams since she was a child and seared itself onto her heart - but that didn't mean she couldn't accept a different one. The Doctor was the Doctor, regardless of the casing. As long as he would let her in his life, she'd be there for him.

River chuckled a little as his lips first touched her neck. "How do you always do that?" she whispered, tilting her neck. He always brushed by a spot that tickled her, and she still hadn't determined if it was intentional.

The Doctor reasoned that after his 10th self, he would always let River into his life, even if it didn't seem like he should for whatever reason. Even if he changed, he doubted he could forget his feelings for River as easily as he did with others.

"How do I always do what?" he asked as he found that spot again. It was always intentional.

"Do...that!" She gently squeezed his shoulders, squirming against him with a laugh. "It tickles!" River wriggled against him, head inclined to the crook of his shoulder.

The Doctor just smiled a bit, "Okay, I'll stop."

He knew because well, he paid attention to pretty much everything River did, even though she thought he didn't sometimes.

He thought about a million things a minute, and spoke them just as fast. Of course she thought he didn't pick up everything she said or did - where would he find enough room?

"You can still kiss my neck," River whispered with a push in her voice, her lips seeking his earlobe. "Just not there for a while." Her hands slid down his shirt, unfastening the first few buttons.

That he did, but when River was in the room, assuming they weren't running from some sort of life and death situation, he was paying attention to her.

The Doctor switched sides of his wife's neck, doing his best not to do anything that tickled. That wasn't the point now.
