[The Rules]

1. Halloween Shopping - Let's go buy witch hats, costumes, and food!

2. Halloween Cooking - Try making all those yummy halloween delights! Can you make that pumpkin cake actually look like a pumpkin?

3. Trick or Treating - Don't worry, all the candy is perfectly safe. Even the enchanted ones are quite safe, and will just do cute and safe things like make people float for a couple of minutes, or make them have a crush on any nearby person for about 30 seconds. They may also turn people orange or make them giggle for about 2 minutes.

4. The Haunted House - Filled with cute ghosts and other things that go bump in your night. Oh, my, is that your character's dearly departed mother, taking this occasion to come and visit her child?

5. The Costume Party - Fun for the whole family. Even if they magically turn into their costumes, nothing really dangerous happens - If you want your character to be a cute fluffy vampire or werewolf for a few hours, feel free to do so!

[Huff, her height's not likely to catch up with his, either. But since he's waiting, she calms down and puts her hands on her hips.]

You spend more time here than I do, you know.

[She thinks about it anyway, even though she's really not all that familiar with the city layout, until something across the street catches her eye.]

Hey! They're giving out candy gels over there! I've been dying to finally get some!

[And she's barely patient enough to have Yuri come with her. (She fully expects to get his share, being Mister Gel-Hater and all.)]

[Yuri makes a face but plods along at her heels. There's a bit of crowd around the stand, but the two worm their way to the front, and the man handing out the candy offers Yuri a couple. He examines them after he ducks out of the way.]

Let's see. This one looks like pineapple, and this one is… the hell? Special flavor?

Huh. If these are as rare as the real ones, then maybe I can sell it.

[He's teasing, of course. Or is he?]

[Rita has to do a bit of shoving to get people out of her way--stupid crowds--but once she's forced her way back out, she takes a peek at Yuri's candies.]

The kid'll probably fire you if you start scamming people.

Now...

[Gleefully, she inspects her own. Apple, pineapple, and...]

Hey! What's with this?! "Lottery gel"?

[Yuri's eyes light up a little as he glances over her shoulder.]

Ooh, you should definitely try that one. Who knows what it'll do?

[Probably nothing. I mean, it's just candy, right? Right? Still, Yuri raises his eyebrows and gives her a goading smile.]

Unless you're too scared. That'd be understandable.

[Dammit, Yuri. Her cheeks redden because she is sort of reluctant to do it.

But she does, anyway.]

There's no way I'd be scared of a candy!

[She tears it open and stuffs it in her mouth; there's that sweet melting sensation she loves, followed by...]

And because Rita has great manners, she spits out the mushy gel.]

[Aw. Yuri was hoping she might start doing back flips or something. He takes a hasty step away as she spits the gel out, holding his robes as if they were some kind of fancy dress. Very manly. Hard to blame Rita, though, because licorice is gross.]

Whoa! Watch the costume.

[Then he gives her more of a pitying look and holds out his two gels.]

Want mine? You know I don't really like 'em.

[Rita'll leave back flips to the old man. She wipes her mouth with the back of her hand and just makes more grossed-out noises instead of worrying about his costume.

When he sticks out the gels, though, she feels at least a little awkward.]

I...guess they would just go to waste if I don't...

[She reaches out (with the hand she didn't use to wipe her mouth, just for him), closes her fingers around the gels, and holds her hand there a moment. She's not wearing gloves with her costume, for once.]

So...thanks.

[The smallest of blushes creeps across his face as their fingers touch, and Yuri looks away for a second as he hands her the candy.]

C'mon. Like you said, it'd just be a waste otherwise.

[OK. Time to try and dial down the awkward. Emphasis on try. Yuri gives her a straight look and then an easy grin.]

But, hey, you're welcome. Now, you wanna see what they've got over there?

[He nods toward another stand down the way, then offers her a hand.]

[Rita's face already has its own touch of pink. It's just some stupid gels (that she loves), she tells herself, but that blush isn't going away.]

Oh. Yeah.

[Not awkward at all.]

I mean, maybe they'll have more of these.

[She takes his hand almost without thinking--she's gotten so used to stuff like this!--then grips it tightly as her face heats up more. She isn't going to let go after taking it, flustered or not.]

H-hurry up! Come on!

[Yuri just laughs.]

All right, all right.

[He gives her hand a light squeeze and sets a fairly brisk pace as they head on to the next stand. It also has a bit of a crowd, and Yuri squints to what's being handed out. Then he frowns a little; the stand has hefty lollipops made to look like the face of Don Whitehorse.]

I can't decide whether that's cute or just an insult to his memory. You want one?

[They do look like they could be tasty. Somehow.]

[Most of her attention is still on their joined hands, but her curiosity surfaces again as they get closer.

Until she sees what it is.]

Ew! Who wants to eat something that looks like a dead guy?!

[Rita didn't really hold the same kind of respect for the Don that Yuri did.]

[He isn't overly offended, but that doesn't mean he won't give her a little crap.]

That's a surprisingly illogical response, coming from you. I'm sure it's just sugar.

[And a shrug.]

[Fair enough. He makes a bit of a choking noise when she says "suck on his face," but it's hard to say whether he thinks it's funny or gross.]

I don't need one.

Why don't you pick the next stand?

[Since she's apparently having better luck.]

[Rita isn't sure what to think about that noise either, but she is genuinely relieved that she doesn't have to watch him eat one of those things.]

So you recognize that I have good taste, huh?

[She's cheered up, giving him a smug smirk. But since he did give her the gels, she wouldn't mind finding something else that he would like instead.

Just so they're even.

...Now, if only she had an easier time telling what's what with all the crowds.]

Hey, the people over there are all excited about something. You want to check it out?

[In the area she points to, people are making noises from laughter to screaming to who-knows-what; Rita finally gets a glimpse of a sign that says Prizes for best monster imitation! Show us your scariest face!]

[As they come upon the next stand, Yuri lets out a snort that is, this time, unmistakable as an indication of amusement.]

Are you kidding? You're way scarier than me. All it takes is one of your mean looks to make the brave Captain Karol quiver.

[Counterpoint: at least she doesn't go around murdering people in the dead of night.]

[At least he thinks it's funny, but Rita still flushes and tries to protest that.]

That's because he was a wimp!

[And he's not so scared of her anymore. Or maybe she isn't so scary anymore... Wait a minute!]

[As far as Rita's concerned, the people Yuri murdered had it coming to them, anyway.]

[Though his face would suggest otherwise. Also that's kind of mean, so he follows it up with something more diplomatic.]

I mean, look, they're giving away prizes. They probably have some pretty good stuff, or else all these people wouldn't be over here.

[Although that might not necessarily be true. These Dahngrest folk seem to be pretty into it regardless.]

[The initial glower she fixes him with eases up; she almost starts to cross her arms before remembering that they're holding hands and after awkwardly lifting her free hand up a bit, she places it on her hip.]

Well--o-obviously. That's why we came over here, of course.

...So, what, you want me to win you something?

[If she denies enough that her face is red, maybe it'll actually come true. Even Rita can have some wishful thinking sometimes.]

[Yuri is legitimately touched by the question, and gives Rita an encouraging smile.]

Yeah, definitely. Since you're offering.

[He lets go of her hand, but gives her a quick kiss to the forehead and a warm pat on the soldier, as if to urge her on.]

[It's her turn in line already, though, and she does want to win him something, dammit! As if it needs to be said, she points at Yuri and shouts, voice a little higher than usual.]

Don't you dare go anywhere, got it?!

[Still, she wonders how the hell she's supposed to make a scary face after he did that? Not that she didn't like it--er-- Forgetting that, it's totally thrown her off! She clenches her fist and scowls as she tries to think of her best scary face...

But apparently, that's already enough for the guys operating the stall: Rita wins a prize without even trying.]

...I'm not sure how I feel about winning this one. But anyway...I guess this one's for you.

[She holds out a pie; the crust is decorated in the shape of a monster, but it's otherwise a normal not-gross apple pie.]
