[ not pictured; one archivist burritoed in no less than three blankets, mostly upsidedown on the couch with a book tossed to one side because hello, good evening Martin. ]
Well I suppose we can’t always help when the creative urge strikes. Did you have fun or was it sadness finger painting?
[ Does he need to bonk this man over the head with tea? Awkward, attentive hovering? We both know he would go well out of his way. Have some self-respect, Martin ]
Is everything alright? Do you need anything?
[ See? The next message sent almost feels like an afterthought. Maybe it is. He'll just take a moment to assess his work. ]
I'm 30. Everything is fueled by ennui. Looks a bit... abstract. Kinda Wuthering Heights. Haaaate that.
[ 99.9% of the time Jon does need bonking over the head with something. It’s his default state. ]
Well nothing is particularly wrong exactly, except that my brain won’t shut up and let me rest. I won’t say no to company, even if it is through the phone.
Oh. Well, yes I believe ennui is the default state of most millennials. Wuthering Heights is an interesting comparison. Did you read it for school?
[ Jonathan read it for school. And then got made to go on a horribly long and dreadfully boring trip up North to the Brontë house. Not enjoyable. ]
It was very much of its time and overblown romantic literature has never really interested me. You can almost forgive the cast for their stupidity if you remember they were all teenagers, but only almost. Because they were all stupid.
Well I thought it was a fantasy novel about dragons and it’s apparently very popular. I thought I was picking up an Anne McCaffery world-building level novel. It’s romance novel garbage. Again.
[ Hey that’s not an entirely bad guess, even if it’s mean, Martin ]
I used to enjoy horror and murder mysteries. Then I had to start living them. I also like things that have a consistent level of world building and plot. So I wouldn’t say I necessarily like Sci-fi and Fantasy all of the time because I don’t, there’s a lot of truly mediocre books in both categories, but they can be a fun read when they’re good. To go by an earlier example I did enjoy the Dragons of Pern quite a lot when I read them in university, could have done without a strange plot device or two but largely they were fun. I also enjoyed The Ender Quartet, it’s just a shame that the author had some ah… opinions. Spoilt it a bit.
[ God he’s a NERD. This is who you have a crush on Martin? Really? ]
I think we were supposed to be boring me to sleep, not you.

It was fun. Hands are perfectly valid paintbrushes.
[ they all have their crashout specials. It's usually moody poetry for him but he'd found paint. Probably cursed, with his luck. ]

Silly crush behavior. ]
I mean if you don't mind spending it with me. Could just bore you until you pass out.
I did. Absolutely hated it.
[ watch. Jon loves it... ]

[ That was almost complimentary, if you squint. ]

What do you LIKE to read? There's got to be something that isnt Victorian melodrama.
[ murder mysteries, right? He's not a stupid man. He will not be typing that. ]
