[Mami was afraid far more than she ever let on, but it was rare for her mask to slip, to crack to the point where the fear could escape. She had always been careful to choke it back, to stop it from coloring her words or showing in her eyes. When awake and conscious, Mami was very good at doing just that. But when it came to the matter of sleep and dreams, it was different. Her control was a frail and paltry thing during those times, the emotional defenses that protected her during the day now unable to parry even a single nightmare.

There had been a sleepover, and she had bolted upright with a scream; her face white as a sheet, gold eyes wide and blank and unseeing, her heartbeat racing along at a mile a minute.]

[Sayaka shoots up out of bed herself - all tangled up in the covers from being such a messy sleeper. In her haste to check on Mami, she falls right out of bed with a thud, landing next to the other girl.]

Mami! What's wrong?

[Of course, she recovers quickly, wasting no time in crawling over to where her friend was sleeping on the extra futon.]

[She's breathing hard, the frightened, quick pants of a prey animal chased to the brink of exhaustion. The fear from the nightmare seems to have followed her into the waking world; Mami is trembling, a fine sweat has broken out on her brow. But at the sound of Sayaka's voice, she manages to come back to herself.

Mami swallows hard, plasters on a shaky little smile.]

...I'm fine, Miki-san. Sorry, I didn't mean to wake you.

You don't sound fine.

[Blunt as always, Sayaka. But this is a friend, so she's not going to pull any punches, especially since she knows how Mami is with hiding things so other people won't have to worry. Smiling back and standing up, she reaches out a hand.]

You wanna talk about it? C'mon, you can lay down in the bed with me.

[It's an offer of genuine concern, as opposed to the casual flirting this would probably have been if she was talking to Madoka.]

[Mami continues to smile, but her gaze flickers away from Sayaka's face, and she doesn't take that hand. Part of her wants to, of course - part of her has always wanted someone to reach out to her, to offer her comfort and a shoulder to cry on - and part of her will always desire that. But Mami has grown too used to loneliness and emptiness, and the habits of self-isolation to save herself from further pain run deep.]

Ah, well, it's not like there's really anything to talk about.....it was just a bad dream. Silly, really. I don't want to waste your time. Just go back to sleep, Miki-san.

[Sayaka frowns for a moment. Mami's always kept this weird kind of polite distance, and she really has no idea why. She's always been a little closer with Madoka, sure, but that shouldn't mean that the two of them can't be friends and trust each other with things too.]

All right, looks like I don't have a choice, then.

[Sayaka smiles now, reaching behind her to pull the covers and pillow from her bed to set up as a second makeshift futon next to where Mami is sleeping. Yawning and stretching, she places her hand atop the other girl's as she lies down.]

If you won't come up to me, I'll just have to come down to you.

The best way for her to deal with these feelings, obviously, is to march uninvited into Sayaka's living space with arms full of food. She plops right down on her bed, sets the bags aside, then starts eating some crackers.

Sort of messy crackers. Man, the crumbs are kind of getting everywhere. Rude.]

[Sayaka moves over to the bed, sitting down next to her and kind of half-looking at her and half-brushing the crumbs away at the same time.]
