Sam Winchester || Supernatural
10
He ran.
As selfish as it may have seemed, Derek stayed low under radar to drown himself in self-loathing and regret. He'd already lost Erica just before. Sometime before then, when she and Boyd left ran away search of a safer life, Derek had to admit he wasn't the best alpha, homicidal and psychopath being the only traits separating him from his uncle as the alpha.]
What are you doing here?
[The question that was meant to sound a lot more harsh and acidic instead comes soft, quiet, and obviously hurt. He didn't tell anyone where he was going to hide, not even Sam. He wants to be alone or so he thinks he does. Talking about it won't help, Derek convinces himself. It'll only make it worse...make him deal with the pain.
Derek turns head from the spiral of vendetta marking a wall in the old, abandoned distillery outside of Beacon Hills to look at Sam, his fingers sliding down the jagged edges of shredded metal.]
Re: 10
When Derek ran, Sam gave him a few days to be alone. He knew the wolf needed it. But when the fourth day came and there was no sign of him, the hunter was too worried to wait any longer. He'd spoken to Peter- a true testament of his concern, since the younger Winchester has never liked the elder Hale- and gotten several places that the Alpha might be hiding out.
Sam checked every single one, growing more and more worried as each place turned out to be empty. He was thoroughly disheartened by the time he went to the distillery, but that only made the relief more intense when he found Derek.]
I was worried about you.
[Sam knows he has every right to be angry with Derek for leaving them, but now that he can see the Alpha, all he can muster is aching empathy. He's the only one out of the entire pack that can fully understand how Derek feels. He's the only one who's lost as much.]
no subject
[He scoffs at first. Anything to send the hunter walking in the other direction and leaving Derek behind. He didn't ask for this. No one was supposed to come looking, they should have given up. He knows who has to blame, but somehow he's more upset with Sam for following Peter's suggestions.]
I don't want you here and I don't need your sympathy, so if you say that you're sorry about what happened...I'll rip your throat out.
[The alpha can't quite control the waver in his voice when speaks, shaking. The wound up emotions and everything left unsaid are making him into a ticking time bomb. He turns back to the spiral, back on Sam as if to dismiss him, but even Derek knows the cold gesture wouldn't be met with the outcome he wanted.]
no subject
He takes several steps toward the Alpha, though there's still some distance between them.]
I'm not here to say I'm sorry, Derek. I know that that does nothing. I'm here because you shouldn't be alone.
[Sam sinks to the floor, resting his back against the wall. It's clear he's not going anywhere any time soon, but it's also clear he isn't going to force Derek into talking. At least not yet.]
no subject
It's beyond pathetic how he acts, but he's too hurt and broken to care. He lets his fingers trace the last of the marking, wishing more than anything that he had the power to do something. Boyd deserved better than what they did to him. He deserved to be avenged. That's the thing though, Derek's too powerless to do it.
Words go unsaid between the two men for along time before the Alpha finally breaks, Sam doesn't have to draw it out of him.]
You really should go. Everyone around me keeps getting hurt. Every time.
[Call him the Angel of Death, because he's always coming out alive in the end - barely.]
no subject
Do you have any idea how many times I've said the same exact thing? Look at my life, Derek. Look at my friends. They're all dead. Every last one of them. And most of them...most of them are my fault.
If you've got the same curse I have, I deserve to be taken by it.
[If there's a single person on the planet who can understand how Derek feels right now, it's Sam. The self-loathing had almost destroyed him several times. But he isn't going to let that happen to Derek.]
no subject
[Derek suddenly spins on his heels so that he was facing Sam, but otherwise stayed where he stood. He doesn't mean to shout, not really, and he definitely isn't trying to measure and see who ranks highest in fucked up lives. It is Sam who can relate the most, who understands the most, and for some reason that unsettles Derek. No one should know what this feels like.]
And don't say that. If you - I can't lose anyone else. I'm not sure I could handle it... I can barely keep myself together now, if you can even call this that...
[It's no secret Derek cares, least of all to Sam. Despite the hunter's belief of being plagued by a curse, Derek sensed something good and heartwarming in him, enough that when the time finally came, he could unload. Although, it still took a bit of coaxing.]
no subject
But no matter which way I look at it, Derek, this isn't your fault. You're one man. You can't fight the world.
[Sam stands slowly, crossing the room until he's standing in front of Derek. His touch is gentle as he lays a hand on his cheek.]
Derek, you don't have to stay together. Not here. Not with me. Sometimes the only way to heal is to break first.
no subject
[Derek tries argue back, but it's just way to small of a voice to count for anything. He'd like to think he was lot stronger than this - defenses already damaged, but crumble at that one touch. Looking down between them, Derek leans into the hand, eyes closed and sucking in a deep breath through his mouth.
Boyd was only trying to help, he thinks.]
I killed them the moment I came into their lives, they'd have the average teenage crap to worry about if it weren't for me. I did this to them, Sam, I'm responsible. I can't stop hurting people around me.
[His downcast gaze is wet with tears he tries to hold back and a part of Derek hates Sam for it, a very tiny piece.]
no subject
[Sam's voice is so strong compared to Derek's. So sure. He knows what he's saying is the truth, and it makes the words come easily. He'd give anything the end the Alpha's pain, but alleviating the blame will have to do.]
no subject
[He tries to interject and argue, but it's clear by the firmness of Sam's voice that he won't have it. It's a true testament to how close they are; Anyone one else and Derek would be ready to bite their head off...mostly figuratively. A tear finally goes rogue, straying down his face despite himself. Without a second thought, he leans into Sam, hiding his face away against his chest, hands clinging to the back of his shirt.
There was no one there he didn't want to see him weak, it was safe to let it all go with Sam there.]
no subject
He doesn't say anything. He knows there aren't words to fix the pain. Only time can do that. But there's comfort in the way he holds him.]
no subject
A while later, Derek finds the courage to look up at the other man, eyes red from crying and all, and nods thank you.]
no subject
We all miss you back at the loft, but if you're not ready to come back, I'll tell them I couldn't find you.
[He'll back Derek's play on this, no matter what it is. Now that he's broken, he can truly start to heal. That's all Sam wanted for him.]
no subject
I'm not ready to go back, yet. I still need time to think.
[He can't deal with more than one person looking at and treating him like he's something so fragile that he'd shatter at the slightest breeze.]
no subject
[And he does mean anything. He turns to go, not wanting to overstay his welcome. He'd already pushed Derek past his limits today. There's no need to press him any more than that. Of course, if the wolf asked him to stay, Sam wouldn't leave. But the hunter is leaving it up to Derek.]
no subject
Sam. Don't leave me. Please.
[He may not have been totally prepared for the others just yet, but Sam was different. He needed him.]
no subject
Crossing the room, Sam kneels beside Derek, a gentle hand on his shoulder.]
I'll stay as long as you need me to.
[It's a promise, and one Sam intends to keep. He can text Dean later and explain.]
no subject
Thanks.
[He squeezes gently then looks down again with a soft sigh.]
I just need someone here to keep me from doing something stupid. I want to kill them for what they did, but I'm just not powerful enough to do it.
[Admitting to his weakness and inability to avenge his fallen pack members hurts more than anything.]
no subject
[Sam doesn't know how comforting his words are, as they bring no instant relief to the pain. To the immeasurable anger simmering in all of them. But the hunter isn't going to stop until he's found a way to take revenge on the Alphas that had taken so much from his pack.]
no subject
[His words are comforting enough, though, they're just not enough to inspire any real confidence, but that could mostly be because Derek's incredibly hard on himself to begin with. There's so much to do and it seems like every time they take a step forward it winds up placing them ten steps back. He feels irrevocably hopeless fighting two losing battles; the Alpha pack and they're still no close to solving the darach problem.]
no subject
[And despite the harm they'd done to Derek's pack, the Alphas were clearly after Derek himself. Sam can't even bear to think about what would happen when they finally decided that recruiting him was pointless. He's afraid Deucalion's desire for expanding his pack is the only reason Derek is still alive.]
no subject
You're not and you won't. When we rejoin the others - when I'm ready to - we'll come up with a plan...change our routine. I promise.
no subject
[Sam settles in more comfortably beside the wolf, back pressed against the walls. He'll sit here as long as he needs to; as long as Derek asks him to. There's nowhere more important for him to be than right here.]
